Balanced attack helps Fairfield beat Vermont 67-59

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (AP)—Ryan Olander, Derek Needham and Warren Edney scored 15 points apiece as Fairfield won its seventh straight game with a 67-59 victory over Vermont on Monday night.

The Stags (8-3) tied the longest win streak under coach Ed Cooley, who had a seven-game streak in each of his first three years at Fairfield. Last season, the Stags’ longest win streak was only four games.

After Fairfield closed the first half on an 8-1 spurt to lead 33-26, the Catamounts (7-3) cut the gap to two points at 47-45 on Brendan Bald’s layup with 7:40 left.

Edney answered with a layup for the Stags, then Yorel Hawkins scored two straight baskets. Vermont got to 63-59 with 1:13 left on Joey Accaoui’s 3-pointer, but Jamel Fields and Edney each hit a pair of free throws to seal the win.

Bald led the Catamounts with a career-high 16 points and Accaoui added 14.
