Hymes helps Canisius beat South Dakota 73-69

VERMILLION, S.D. (AP)—Alshwan Hymes scored 18 points, including four 3-pointers, to lead Canisius to a 73-69 victory over South Dakota on Tuesday night.

Tomas Vazquez-Simmons added a double-double of 13 points and 10 rebounds for the Griffins (4-4), while Elton Frazier had 11 and Julius Coles 10.

Jake Thomas led the Coyotes (3-6) with 15 points, including three late 3-pointers. Trevor Gruis added a career-high 14 points and Louie Krogman 12.

Canisius led 27-16 with 8:01 left in the first half and was up 37-29 at the break.

But South Dakota rallied in the second half to tie 47-47 with 12:26 left. Greg Logins responded with a three-point play to put the Griffins back ahead 50-47.

The Coyotes closed within 71-69 on Thomas’ 3-pointer with 17 seconds to go, but Vazquez-Simmons converted two free throws for the final margin.
