YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (AP)—Ashen Ward and Devonte Maymon each scored 13 points and Youngstown State defeated Buffalo 64-53 for its first win over the Bulls since 2002.
In the process, the Penguins (2-0) recorded their best start to a season since 2004-05. They held off hard-charging Buffalo, which trailed 53-49 late in the second half. Ward answered with five consecutive points to give Youngstown State the final bit of breathing room it needed.
Damian Eargle had 14 rebounds and Tre Brewer 10 for the Penguins, who outrebounded the Bulls 46-33.
Jawaan Alston and Dave Barnett each had 13 points to lead Buffalo (1-1).
Buffalo got off to a good start, bolting to a 10-2 lead, only to see Youngstown State answer more forcefully. Led by Vytas Sulskis’ six-point spurt, the Penguins rattled off 17 points in a row to claim a 19-10 lead with 10:55 left in the half. Sulskis finished the game with 10 points.
