Portland rocks Wisconsin-Milwaukee 80-60 in opener
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP)—Jared Stohl scored 15 points, all on 3-pointers, to lead Portland to an 80-60 season-opening victory over Wisconsin-Milwaukee on Friday at the Athletes in Action Classic.
Luke Sikma added 14 points and 12 rebounds and freshman Tanner Riley 14 points to lead the Pilots. Tone Boyle scored 13 points to pace the Panthers.
The Pilots never trailed and set the tone early with a 19-2 lead behind eight points from Sikma. Stohl had a trio of 3-pointers in the first half, including one that put Portland ahead 40-18.
Wisconsin-Milwaukee ended the half with eight unanswered points, including back-to-back 3-pointers by Boyle and Lonnie Boga.
The Panthers closed within nine points five times early in the second half, thanks partly to Anthony Hill, who finished with 11.
Nemenja Mitrovic hit three 3-pointers and finished with 11 points for Portland.
