No. 4 Villanova gets past No. 5 West Virginia

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP)—Scottie Reynolds didn’t have any memorable games against West Virginia—until he got hot against the Mountaineers in the second half Monday night.

The senior guard scored 19 of his 21 points in the final 13 minutes and No. 4 Villanova held off No. 5 West Virginia 82-75.

In the season’s first matchup of teams ranked in the top five, the Wildcats (21-2, 10-1) rebounded from a blowout loss at No. 7 Georgetown on Saturday to pull into a first-place tie with No. 2 Syracuse in the Big East.

“You have guys asking where the toughest place to play is, and hands down for me, it’s West Virginia,” said Reynolds, who had averaged nine points in three previous games against the Mountaineers, including two losses in Morgantown.

“I remember a lot of years here,” he said. “It feels good to get one under our belt. It feels good and to do it the way we did it, it feels even better.”

Villanova shot 57 percent (29 of 51) from the field and its guard-oriented lineup outrebounded the Mountaineers 38-30.

Leading scorer Da’Sean Butler had his worst performance in three weeks and that haunted West Virginia (19-4, 8-3), which couldn’t overcome an 11-point halftime deficit and saw its six-game winning streak snapped. The Mountaineers will have to wait until Friday night at No. 25 Pittsburgh to try for their sixth straight 20-win season.

“You can’t expect Da’ to get 30 points every game and carry us,” West Virginia coach Bob Huggins said. “Our other guys are going to have to do things.”

Butler had scored a season-high 33-points as West Virginia rallied from 16 points down in the second half to beat St. John’s 79-60 on Saturday. Last season he torched Villanova for a career-high 43 points at home, but the Wildcats’ Reggie Redding limited him to 13 points on 2-of-12 shooting Monday night.

“We were really concerned about him,” Villanova coach Jay Wright said. “In the St. John’s game they were down the same way and he just got it going and once he got it going, it was over. Reggie Redding did a really good job on him.”

Butler didn’t get his first points until a 3-pointer with 8:40 left in the first half and was held without a field goal in the second half.

“We didn’t really compete as well as we should’ve, especially considering the situation and how much the game meant for us,” Butler said. “Overall we weren’t focused as far as taking advantage of easy shots. It would’ve been a different situation if we did.”

This was West Virginia’s first home game since fans threw objects onto the court last Wednesday, one of which struck Pittsburgh assistant coach Tom Herrion under his right eye. WVU President Jim Clements apologized to the University of Pittsburgh and declared that “boorish and unruly behavior by our fans will not be tolerated.”

Students behaved themselves this time. They scrapped a derogatory chant typically done during opponent introductions. Extra security workers surrounded the yellow-shirted student section and fans were asked to report hooligans by text message just in case.

Corey Fisher added 17 points and Antonio Pena had 10 for Villanova

Darryl Bryant led five Mountaineers in double figures with 15 points. Devin Ebanks had 13 points, Mitchell finished with 12 and Kevin Jones added 11.

West Virginia couldn’t feed off the capacity crowd, leading only in the game’s opening minutes. The Mountaineers picked up their defensive intensity after halftime, holding Villanova without a field goal for the first 6 minutes. But West Virginia did little on offense to get going.

Villanova held West Virginia under 50 percent shooting from the field for the 11th straight game. West Virginia was just 7 of 27 from 3-point range and shot poorly from the free-throw line, finishing 18 of 32.

“We really played as a unit defensively,” Wright said. “We really covered for each other and played unselfishly. When we had to switch, we switched. We got down against Georgetown and lost our composure and started scrambling. Tonight, we really kept good composure defensively.”

Every time West Virginia was poised to make a run, the 6-foot-2 Reynolds was there to answer against a West Virginia lineup that at times averaged 6-7.

“There were times when I was the smallest guy on the floor,” he said.

Reynolds didn’t get a specific pep talk or instructions from Wright about taking over. The opportunities just came to him.

“He wanted everyone to continue to be aggressive,” Reynolds said. “All five guys needed to be aggressive so they couldn’t play on one person or two.”

Limited to two points in the first half, Reynolds hit a 3-pointer and converted two three-point plays over a 3-minute span to push Villanova’s lead to 58-47 with 10:28 remaining.

Casey Mitchell gave West Virginia a flicker of hope with a long 3-pointer and free throw with 2 minutes left to bring the Mountaineers within 74-69, but Villanova converted six of eight free throws in the final minute and made 19 of 22 overall.

All of u mountaineer haters need to look at the big picture. WVU is wayyyy better than villa-no-fun. WVU made it to the championship and they're going to win tonight, AT LEAST give them credit for that.

to the unbeliever who said nova would not make the sweet 16......do you know they have made it there 4 out of the last 5 years? I wouldn't bet against them....again the wildcats were victims of many bad calls ..the announcers couldn't believe some of them..they would have beat wvir by at least 20 in a fairly called game...whats up?

I realize how important it is that Kansas fans think their team is better than everyone else's; however, did you know that your Morris twins were thinking seriously about attending Villanova? Imagine, them with what Nova has in the backcourt and on the wings. Who then would you consider the best in the country?
Yes, Kansas has a big front line, but they still need to get the ball to them. Kansas has one really good guard in Sherron Collins; however, imagine them without him? Remember last year's North Carolina team without Lawson (the team was still good, but not great) and this years Tar Heels without a true point guard? You better hope Sherron stays healthy because no matter how big your front line is, the ball has to get across mid-court to get in their hands. I would say NC has every bit as good a front line as Kansas; however, they don't have a true point guard and they probably won't make the tourney this year. Enough said. I look forward to seeing you play a top four or five Big East team in March. Happy trails to you.

Getting back to the game, Nova's guards came up big just like they have most times this year. Scottie Reynolds should be a 1st team All America. Nothing spectacular just steady as they come!!

BE is by far the best conf. B12 plays a sissy schedule and the facts speak for themselves. Here are the strength of schedule comparison.

    Georgetown - 1, West Virginia - 2, Louisville - 6, UConn - 7, Seton Hall - 10, Syracuse - 12, Pitt - 15, DePaul - 18, Nova - 20, Cincy - 21, South Florida - 26, Rutgers - 28.

    Kansas State - 3, Kansas, 13, Texas AM - 13, Texas Tech - 19, Baylor - 27

That makes 12 BE teams in the top 30 vs 5 for the B12. The BE bottom 2 teams are Marquette at 48 and Prov at 62. The bottom 2 teams for the B12 are Iowa St at 84 and Nebraska at 96. The BE ave sos is 23 vs B12 of 40.

BE has 5 legit top 25 teams w/ 4 in the top 10. B12 has 2 legit top 25 teams, both in top 10 today.

And for you posters that talk about how big and strong KU is. Let's have the facts speak for themselves again.

KU's top 7 players ave 6'4 and 3/4 inches and 210 lbs. 'Cuses top 7 ave 6'6" and 214 lbs. And even though 'cuse are bigger and stronger they also are more agile and can run the floor. This is why 'Cuses top 7 average 18.8 assist/game vs KU's 15.8 per game. 'Cuse's big men will make Aldrich look slow and silly. He most likely foul out. Again, after watching KU last night, 'cuse would beat them by 12-15 points on a neutral site. 'Cuse is bigger, stronger, faster, shoot a higher % by alot, dish the ball better, and play better defense.

HP just announced the HAL10000 computer and is displaying their new prize at the computer show. Anyone who cares to, can walk right up and carry on a conversation with the machine. So the first person steps up and the HAL10000 says, "Good Morning I'm a HAL10000 computer, if you will tell me your IQ, we can have a conversation."

Well, the guy responds, "I have an IQ of 160." So the HAL10000 says, "Very well, let's discuss Einsteinium tensor mechanics in close proximity to a singularity event horizon." And so they did.

Later, another guy walks up and exclaims, "My IQ is 110." So the HAL10000 says, "Very well, let's discuss the working of the internal combustion engine." And so they did.

Finally, this third guy walks up and says, "My IQ is 65." So the HAL10000 replies, "HOW BOUT DEM EERS?"

Nothing against WV really, just glad to see them lose. The fans can't seem to get used to having a ranked team.

Bill Self what a joker he can"t be serious if he thinks Kansasss is going to beat any of those Big East Teams. Kansasss would not even be in the Top 8 of the Big East Conference. If a team wants to stay out there and shoot 30 foot shots to try to beat Syracuse, Good Luck with that, That's not going to happen. They are where they are because they make adjustments and Play like a Team. No I in TEAM and that is why they will win the NCAA Championship......Syracuse would kill Texas, UConn smoked them and UCONN is not even Ranked. little 12 is no match for the Big East, so Bill Self AND bobby Flighty go sow your garbage somewhere else.

West Virginia is really over rated. I'm not a fan of any team in that conference either. It just makes no sense why they're rated as high as they are. They've beaten nobody. When they have a big game they get beat down. They should be around 17th or so.

Nova, playing mostly guards, shredded the WV defense in the paint and continued to shoot over a much taller WV team. At this point, WV is good, but probably not a top 10 team, and most certainly not a top 5 team. Having said that, I am still a WV fan and wish them well in their final conference games, the Big East tournament and the NCAA tournament. Who knows, they may get it together after all.

Bill Self........... your name should be Bill "Go F^ck" yourself. So what if KU beat a mediocre Texas team. UConn beat them by 14 and Uconn is sub-par in the Big East. KU against top 20 teams, beat Baylor by 5, woopee, beat KsState by 2, close one and lost to Tenn., haha. You crushed Temple, good game. And by the way who cares if Syracuse was down to Cincy early? They won by 27 points man. Plenty off teams are down early. that's why they play two halves of Basketball tool. Big East is clearly the better conference this year. It's all there in black and white if you can read it.

Mr. Self, understand what KU did to Texas, but when you look at the two conferences (Big East vs Big 12), I truly believe Big East is a better basketball conference. I don't think any Big 12 school can handle the physicalness of the Big East. I could be wrong. I would love the KU or someone win this whole thing, but I don't think it will happen. It will come from the Big East.

Sorry,Bgredd, you should go east young man.Where the overcrowded hoodlum cities will blend in with your phogged up brain.Syrexcuse played Cinn.and was way behind.KU played the former #1 Texas Longhorns in their court an whooped them 80-68.KU beat Nebraska, they didn't kick A,just enough to let the deep KU bench practice.Nebraska could beat any big least team and that's a fact.Move least ,Bgredd!!
