ORLANDO, Fla. (AP)—Lazar Hayward scored 27 points and Jimmy Butler added 15 to help Marquette beat Xavier 71-61 on Thursday at the Old Spice Classic.
Hayward had two 3’s and David Cubillan hit a long-range jumper during an 11-0 run that put the Golden Eagles (5-0) up 64-55 with four minutes to play.
Jason Love had 21 points and 19 rebounds for Xavier (3-1).
Hayward had 16 points as Marquette took a 33-29 halftime lead. Love scored 12 for Xavier, which held a six-point advantage early on.
Xavier sophomore Jordan Crawford, the Atlantic 10 Conference player of the week, missed all nine of his shots and didn’t score in the first half. He wound up with nine points.
