ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP)—Jared Stohl and T.J. Campbell scored 15 points each as Portland clobbered UCLA 74-47 Thursday night in the first round of the 76 Classic.

The Pilots (4-0) will play No. 22 Minnesota in the semifinals Friday.

Portland, coming off a seven-point win over Oregon, never trailed. It was UCLA’s largest margin of defeat since losing 79-48 at Oregon on March 1, 2003.

Malcolm Lee had 14 points and five rebounds and Drew Gordon 10 points for the Bruins (2-2), who will play No. 12 Butler in a consolation game Friday.

The Pilots, picked second in the West Coast Conference preseason coaches poll, knifed through UCLA’s defense with ease, scoring off the dribble and making 3-pointers.

Entering the game having made 52.1 percent of their 3-point attempts, the Pilots continued making a barrage of long-distance shots to bury the Bruins. Portland sank 11 of 19 3-pointers and shot 54.2 percent overall.

Conversely, UCLA shot 32.7 percent overall and 21.7 percent on 3-pointers. The Bruins converted just 6 of 14 free throws.

The 47 points were the fewest UCLA had scored since a 55-48 loss to Washington State on Feb. 5, 2004.

UCLA was so inept on both ends of the court that a fan sitting across from the Portland bench yelled late in the second half, “Come on, you’re embarrassing us!” and, “Come on, have some pride! Let’s go!”

Stohl made all five of his 3-point attempts to move up to third on the Pilots’ career list for 3-point baskets, while Nik Raivio contributed 13 points and five assists.

UCLA forward Nikola Dragovic rejoined the team after serving a two-game suspension. Dragovic, who finished with three points, was suspended after he was arrested in an assault case. He was reinstated Tuesday.

The Pilots made 6 of 8 3-pointers and shot 57.1 percent from the field en route to a 36-19 halftime lead.

Hey germames, John Wooden won FIVE of his ten national championships without either Alcindor or Walton -- '64, '65, '70, '71, '75. (In '71 Walton was a freshman, and Wooden NEVER played freshmen. ...not even for a single minute).

Washington has one senior on their roster. Sounds like they are young as well.

This will stick in you UCLA fans crawl. Bo Ryan for Wisconsin is a better coach the Wooden was. You asked"well how can that be?" LOL. Let look at the facts, baring National championships.....Wooden's record was 664-162, a .804 average......outstanding!
Bo Ryan's record is (as of last year) was 603-202, a .750 average......not as good? Or is it, considering Wooden had 4&5 star athletes, where as Ryan had 2 star at best.......give Ryan a Lew Alcinder, a Walton.......Lol...he'd be 703-102 with a .873 win ratio! So to me, the better coach is the one, that does more with less......just my opinon. But I'm willing to argue it!

"Howland's system" lol.... what exactly would that be ?? the way they play demonstrates that THERE IS NO SYSTEM. even last year, with many experienced players, they did the same thing. stand around motionless "offense", then force up a 3 pointer just before the shot clock expires. lame !

WOW, so much for that rivals recruiting senareo? A team that constantly gets top recruits were certainly embarrassed ! If you like to discuss one of the best college coaches, check out Bo Ryan for Wisconsin. Seems every year he's in the tourny, with 2 star players at best. How about this Marquette team, ran circles around Michigan? Funny how neither Wisconsin or Marquette were ranked in the top 75? Good coaching trumps recruiting, but I wonder what Ryan's record would look like if he had some of those 4 & 5 star recruits?

    @OLDMAN...

Ucla has a young team, every season! THIS IS NOTHING NEW! R U Dumb? or u just don't follow the B R U I N S? Kevin Love, was a freshmen, Jordan Farmar, was sophomore, Jrue Holiday, was freshmen, Russell Westbrook, was a sophomore...Do u get it? Ben Howland was coaching then, these Freshmen & Sophomores, are NOT being coached, they are just as good, if not better. So please don't make any excuses. Ben Howland, is doing a bad J O B!

I played sports at UCLA, and you wouldn't believe how badly they put down Portland and Oregon in general. I could add it here but I doubt it would get passed the screeners. So I'll just leave it to your imagination. Somewhere in the realm of hippies and hicks. Portland Basketball has it's image problems too, but bravo to the Pilots who never gave up. You made Portland proud.

How quickly we forget! Three final fours in a row and you guys are calling for Howland's head. It just goes to show how ridiculous these blogs are. We are four games into the year so have a little patience and wait for the SYSTEM to take affect. When the freshman decide to play a little defense, everything else will follow. This won't be a banner year but with Josh Smith and Tyler Lamb coming in, next year will be fun to watch.

What most of you so called knowledgeable fans don't understand is Howland has 9 of 12 freshman and sophmores and only 3 seniors. Big deal 2 and 2 at this point and they look just like that . A group of kids 6 true freshman and 3 sophmores trying to learn how to play a completely new system to them along with 3 good seniors but nothing really outstanding. UCLA has lost over 8 players, topline NBA drafted players in 2 years and their isn't a coach anywhere with the exception of Coach Wooden who could and has taken that many freshman and sophmores to the likes of the NCAA championship. Portland lives and dies by the 3 point and any team that hits 55% of its 3's is going to beat any team with that kind of offensive display. My guess is UCLA won't make the tournment this year unless they really get better and buy into Howland's system completely and two the Pac 10 falls apart and they get in with mirrors and that isn't something that is going to happen this year. This year 2009-2010 basketball year with be lacking the presence of the greatest NCAA basketball program in history due mainly to inexperience and youth in that order. The phrase wait until next comes to mind right now. Give them a year together with next years' newbe's and watch what happens then. Next year one of the better offensive and defensive centers is coming to town and a couple of big insiders along with him. But let me say one thing here, DON'T COUNT OUT BEN HOWLAND yet a long way until march madness and UCLA has shown in the past a way of winning just because they learn how to play together as a team and defend like no other. Go Bruins Fight Bruins Win Bruins.....

@MR...exactly! He has been doing the momentum killin antics wit da timeouts for years now, I still feel they could have won one of da final 4's, Ben Howland had major talent, these young guys very good, he's not even coaching correctly! Portland is super easy to defend, they shoot all 3's ! I am with u, when u say why even play da seniors *(especially if it's a rebuilding year)* and they don't produce anyways! Bobo, should be starting, Howland has developed him, or does he know to develope big men? Jerime Anderson, does NOT have a clue, and looks a deer n headlights, Abdul-Hamid plays better, but is on da bench, Lee, needs shooting drills, or should become a slasher. I am really confused, why is Ben Howland sitting da freshmen AGAIN? he did it last year too. Drew Gordon, could be the best power foward in america, and Ben Howland has NOT developed him! SAD SAD SAD, he knew the freshmen last year, were gonna be needed this season, and yet he did not give them the chance. Here we are AGAIN, same BS...TRY SOMETHING NEW BEN...don't be afraid to play the freshmen, they are GOOD, remember?

Basketball games are meant to be athletic events, not outside shooting contests. This walk up the court, and toss up 3 pointer after 3 pointer, is NOT basketball. It is NOT fun to watch. It does NOT win games. It certainly does NOT win championships. Having all your players stand motionless around the 3 point arc, and take turns throwing up a 3 point shot is NOT an offense. Howland will NEVER win a national championship until he learns this, and teaches his teams to beat the opposition up and down the floor for easy high percentage transition baskets. Let athletes use their athletic ability to their advantage. Very likely, lots of top recruits are not considering UCLA because they know they won't get to use their athletic ability there. Howland says he admires Coach Wooden so much, but his coaching style is nothing at all like that of Wooden. I don't get it.

Gee what a surprise. Howland's coaching style at it's best. Growl at and chastise players rather than providing praise and encouragement. Yank them out of the game for making one mistake. Call a time out after a key Bruin basket to set up your defense yet kill any chance for momentum. Why even play the seniors right now, they are bit players anyway. Get Bobo some experience which Howland failed to even attempt last year. He knew he would be losing all those guys this year, yet last year he failed to get the younger guys any meaningful game experience. You're never going to get very far playing a 6'8" guy at center unless you have some superstars on the team which they don't. Top programs do not get into situations like the Bruins are in unless the coach fails to recruit the right talent and or develop the right players. This is going to be horrendous.

Frankly, UCLA is finished as one of the top teams each year... as kentucky, kansas, n.c., duke, etc.. Woodens days are long gone... and now UCLA is long gone... i recall when USC was very tough... with Coach Boyd... but a cross town was Wooden and his kids at UCLA.... so never
got to see how good USC really was... now but programs are just good d 1 schools..
but never again.... look at in fear as they were years ago... Beating UCLA made a great
season for most teams... now it is just another W or L.... that is just the way it is... ciao
