Gonzaga wins Maui title, beats Cincinnati in OT

LAHAINA, Hawaii (AP)—Thanks to several big plays by 7-footer Robert Sacre, Gonzaga left Maui with a championship at last.

Sacre scored 14 points and the Bulldogs won the Maui Invitational for the first time in three tries, beating Cincinnati 61-59 in overtime Wednesday night at the Lahaina Civic Center.

“Obviously, this is the pinnacle and the creme de la creme of all the preseason tournaments. This is the kingpin and any other analogy you’d like to use. That’s why it’s so special,” Gonzaga coach Mark Few said. “When you look up and you see all those teams that have won this thing, and what they’ve accomplished maybe after they won this thing, it makes you feel great for your guys.”

With the Bearcats clinging to a 55-53 lead with 43 seconds left, co-tournament MVP Steven Gray—who shared the honor with senior Matt Bouldin— held the ball as long as the shot clock would allow before feeding Sacre in the paint for a one-handed floater with 16 seconds left.

Sacre then came up even bigger—and higher—on the defensive end, hustling back down the court to defend Cincinnati’s final play, run without a timeout.

After playing a little too far up with Lance Stephenson draining the final seconds at the top of the arc, Sacre eventually dropped back to cover Yancy Gates, who charged along the right baseline and caught Stephenson’s alley-oop pass with just seconds remaining, attempting to flush it home for the championship.

Sacre, though, timed his jump perfectly and swatted the ball out of Gates’ hands, sending the game to overtime.

“That was a big-time play,” Few said. “We were telling our guys we needed to bluff help, bluff help, but the message was trying to be sent to the perimeter players and not the post players. So he got a little excited and got up the lane and he made an incredible athletic play to turn and go make that block.”

It was Gonzaga’s first championship on Maui after losing to Connecticut 65-63 in the 2005 title game and finishing fourth in 2002.

Few was most impressed with how his team won the three-day tournament.

“We had to dig ourselves out of a hole against Colorado, we played a very efficient game yesterday against a Wisconsin team then we got in a backyard brawl tonight and won it that way,” Few said. “So we won it in a lot of different fashions, so I think that’s a good sign right there.”

The Bulldogs, who also got 12 points from Demetri Goodson, overcame a 10-point second-half deficit. Gray and Elias Harris added 13 points apiece for Gonzaga (5-1).

“They showed a lot of heart tonight,” Cincinnati coach Mick Cronin said. “They know how to win. Their tradition is established right now. They have guys that understand how to step it up. They were never going to go away, they were going to keep fighting.”

Stephenson led Cincinnati (4-1) with 15 points.

The Bearcats looked weary in overtime, missing several free throws in the first 1:45. Cincinnati’s Steve Toyloy made one of two from the foul line before Gray found Sacre for an emphatic baseline dunk with 2:41 left that put Gonzaga in front by two.

Harris made it a three-point game with a free throw but Gates grabbed an air ball by Cashmere Wright and slammed it through with 12.6 seconds remaining to trim it to 60-59.

The Bearcats, who led by four at halftime and 10 with 13:20 left in the second half, had a final chance to force a second overtime with 9.8 seconds to go after Sacre hit the front end of a pair of free throws. Driving to his right with time winding down, Wright put up a floater that caromed off the backboard, hit the rim and fell into the arms of Harris as time expired.

“At the end of the day, this has been a great trip for us,” Cronin said. “Everyone can see that Cincinnati basketball is back on the map. We’re not going anywhere.”

The Zags did not win because of the call at the end. How about that ridiculous charge Bouldin was called for late in the 2nd half? The commentators were both stunned and that should have been 2 FT's our way, which considering Matt's FT percentage probably would have been two makes. A game is not decided on one play and each team had calls against them, but that's basketball. Cincy had plenty of chances to win but they couldn't capitalize.

TJ, just because Cincy was picked #7 in a coaches pre-season poll doesn't mean anything. Syracuse was ranked 6th in the Big East, but do you think that's true? Those pre-season polls mean absolutely nothing and Cincinnati is a very good team. Look how easily they beat UMD (who will probably be a tournament team) and Vanderbilt.

Tj(#34)...That's ridiculous man. C'mon. I can tell you're brighter than that...blaming the refs!? Cincy simply got away from what was making them successfful in the first half and that's getting the ball down low to Stephenson and Gates.. Instead they decided to shoot 3's for the 2nd half, got tired, and couldn't make 3's nor free throws down the stretch. Gonzaga knew that Cincy couldn't and just kept playing their game. Gonzaga has always, mentally, been tough as nails. That is WHY they are in the game at the end all the time to get some wins. Great coaching on down. I've seen Gonzaga lose games like this also to good teams. Goes both ways, man.

Nathan Heileman(#35)...it wasn't a foul 'cause if it was the refs woulda called it. ;-)

I never said that the call at the end was the only deciding factor. UC should have made their free throws earlier (or in overtime) and put it away. They didn't, so they need to carry the burden for their loss. What I said, and ALL I said, was that that was not a good clean block at the end of the game. It was a foul.

You're telling it how you want it to be...not how it is. Just go get in line with all of the other wishful thinkers who don't have a clue about sports...as I'd already asked you to do. "Wake up"...haha. I stayed awake long enought to see Gonzaga come from behind and beat an outta shape Cincy team that made bad decisions when it counted and couldn't hit a free throw to save Jesus. If Cincy needs the refs to bail them out it's gonna be a long season for them. But unlike the other minion who believe that Cincy was robbed(I still laugh when I think of that play), I think Cincy will be fine.

TJ(#30)...You can get in line with all the other whiners who have no clue about sports. That was a correct "no call". Cincy shouldn't have been going for an ally-oop in the first place. NO ref is gonna make that call...end of story. Even if it was called, who's to say Gates woulda made the free throws...Cincy couldn't hit water from a boat at the end of that game. What were they?...3-10 in the final 8 minutes. 30%!!!! Cincy shoulda drove to the hoop and got the contact that way if they wanted foul shots. An over the top gimmick play is not gonna get it. Cincy oughta file that one away for the future.

NEWS FLASH: GONZAGA WON. CINCY HAD THEIR OPPORTUNITY AND LOST. The Cincy players aren't even upset 'cause they know the truth. Cincy will probably win a game or two on controversial calls...that's what happens in sports! MOVE ON....both teams are gonna be good this year.

It's funny how fans act at times.Gonzaga has a real good team but to win like that is a shame.Cincy is playing better this year but their ranked to finish 7th in the Big East. The zags beat a mediocre Big East team in OT.I watched the game and I feel Cincy was robbed.

Cmon Jesse L contact in college ball these days is just like the NBA, no blood no foul. The announcers were just upset because they thought Cincy would win. If the Cincy player would have balled up and dunked the ball there would have been no question. Go Zags!!!!

CarlosN(#17)...Are you kidding me?! Maybe other than the pre-season NIT, this tourney ISSSS the crown jewel pre-season tourney! Team fight every year to get into this one. Google past touney entries and see. Look at 2010's teams if you're still not convinced: Oklahoma, Kentucky, Michigan State, UConn, Virginia, Washington, Witchita State, Chaminade(host). Yeah, no big deal tourney(lol). C'mon dude.

You people saying Gozaga was "handed" a win obviously have no clue about basketball nor sports in general.

There is NO WAY in any sport that the ref makes a call there. Cincy should not have been going for an ally-oop anyways...how friggin' arrogant is that?! Cincy had their chances to put that game away...just like Gonzaga did a few times down the stretch. It came down to free throws and conditioning and Gonzaga was just fresher at the end. To say it came down to ONE call is ridiculous and an insult to a great game played by BOTH teams. If that had been the other way I don't think you'd see Gonzaga fans making excuses...class doesn't need excuses. You whiners get a clue.

I'm a Saint Mary's grad...y'all don't know how hard it is to defend the "Zags right now. But they EARNED that win PERIOD and ya gotta give credit where credit is due. The 'Zags will be tough again this year again. Ok. I think I still have throwup in my mouth(lol). We'll see ya at Mckeon in January! I can't wait. You are going DOWN. Peace 'til then. Go GAELS!!!!

i don't think the guy that wrote this acticle actually watched this game. cincy got screwed, gates was hacked at the end of the game, this guy is an idiot if he thought that was a good play, even the announcers said it was a foul, the game shouldn't even had went to ot. also that was a pass from cash to gates in ot, not an airball. Yahoo should really have someone that actually watched the game write the article!!

    Slick,

Go back and watch the replay again. There was major contact on that shot. Even the anouncers were dumbfounded that a call was not made. No doubt we blew it on the free throw line in the minutes leading up (and may have again had the call been made). It should have never come down to that one call, but c'mon, that is a foul all day long. Zaga has the name recognition these days and the ref's saw it their way to force OT. Plain and simple. Oh yeah Mark, Wahhh Wahhh...grow up. To all of the Zag fans who aren't popping pimples on their bed sheets, good game!

Foul at the end of the game. LMAO. Pretty sure I remember Cincy being at the foul line 3 times in the last couple minutes, making 1 out of 6 or so. Shoot better than 35% from the floor and 45% from the line. Whiners whine and winners win. Go ZAGS!!

Hey, the game lasted 45 minutes. One call didn't blow it for Cinnci! Gonazaga with its young players is going to be a DAMN good team. They are better on defense, quicker to the basket and have better Chemistry than previous teams. They are going to keep getting better and better and are an absolute powerhouse Mid-Major poised to make a run to the Final Four if not this year, then next for sure! Mark Few - Like Coach K is not in it just for the money!

There were calls both ways, you can't say Gonzaga was handed the win. You could say that about any game in any sport if you wanted to make excuses. Gonzaga just looked fresher when it counted.

To bad so many want to blame this loss on one call, which no Ref worth being on the court would have called anyway. It may have been a foul but the replay did not show that there was enough contact to justify a foul, just a great athletic play. Cincy played well but got beat by a team that is more mentally tough and has been here before. Go Zags! You deserved it and had to come back from as far as 10 points down in the second half. Watch for the Zags to make a huge run in March!

Man, does Cincy have a bunch of whiners, or not? Zags won, fouls through the game, probably even. If that was a foul? Let em play. Beating Cincinnati was not easy.

That being said. The Maui Invitational is not a big time tournament. But Chaminade is a beautiful location. The gym is tiny, but the mural is beautiful, and the school has a lot of local charm.

    Good luck Zags.

I think it was a hard fought game by both teams that were obviously tired. Cincinnati beat a good Vandy team and a good Maryland team before running out of gas against the Zags. Sure the refs missed a big one at the end of regulation that was not the only factor in the Bearcats losing. Fatigue, taking low percentage shots...on and on. This team will be a contender in the Big East and in March. GO BEATCATS, GO BENGALS and GO BEARCAT FOOTBALL!!!!

Too bad the refs missed the obvious foul at the end of regulation

    ....

    Translation: WAAAAHHHH!

The refs made bad calls against the Zags too, earlier in the game.

    They count just as much.

Its so wonderful to have a old kennel Zags team again , do you remember when ronny was young E. Harris . Bouldin reminds me of Stepp. Sacre and Violette ? #10 Jennifer the Zags have been leaving teams scratching there heads for years on how they lost that one , like the last time in the tourney that we beat cincy . The fourth best team in the WCC has already beaten Stanford and Oklahoma. "Meech Goodson" needs to be tested for Usain Bolt DNA.

Too bad the refs missed the obvious foul at the end of regulation. Of course if UC hadn't gone 1 for the last ten minutes on free throws, they would have won, call or no call. I agree with the comment that the Zag's looked in better shape. Cinci's lack of legs definately was the difference on the free throw line. Hopefully, this will motivate the cats to get in shape for conference play.
