Wall leads No. 5 Kentucky past Cleveland State

CANCUN, Mexico (AP)—Once John Wall gained his footing, not even a warped court could slow down Kentucky.

The heralded freshman found his form in the second half and proved too much to handle in the open floor as the No. 5 Wildcats raced past Cleveland State 73-49 on Tuesday in the Cancun Challenge at the Moon Palace Resort.

Wall scored a team-high 15 points, including 11 after halftime, as he zipped in and out of the Cleveland State defense. The nation’s top-rated recruit last year repeatedly took charge with the ball, drawing trips to the free-throw line or setting up teammates for open looks at the basket.

“They had to go help and didn’t have any choice because John was driving in there and getting everyone looks,” Kentucky forward Darius Miller said. “It changes everything because everybody has to help and if they don’t it’s an easy layup for him. It just creates so many open opportunities for everyone else.”

Wall did most of his damage from the foul line, going 9 of 10 while taking only five shots from the field. When he didn’t finish or draw a foul himself, he found open teammates with kick-out passes against a Vikings defense stretched thin.

“Our team started making shots and our big men were running, so that opened lanes for me,” Wall said. “Every time they collapsed when I penetrated, I was kicking out to shooters and they were making shots. It was being more patient and finding the open people.”

The game was played in unconventional surroundings, with the resort’s main ballroom being converted into a makeshift gymnasium.

Chandeliers hung from the low ceiling, two electronic scoreboards were connected to the ceiling by wire cables, and a food buffet sat just a few feet off the end of one baseline. Sections of the hardwood floor had gaps several inches wide and the baseline was a jagged line where the floor did not match up.

The game was chippy and ragged from the start, with both teams talking trash and officials whistling 24 fouls in the first half. A late 3-pointer by 6-foot-10 forward Josh Harrellson stemmed a late Cleveland State run and gave Kentucky a 35-27 lead at the break.

Kentucky (5-0) took control early in the second half when freshman forward DeMarcus Cousins hit a 3 as the shot clock expired, then made five free throws on one possession, aided by an intentional foul called on D’Aundray Brown for grabbing Wall and pulling him to the floor on a breakaway.

“When teams watch film they think we’re soft and try to push us around,” Wall said. “We got tired of it and started to push back and the game got really physical. They can think that if they want to, but I’m not going to be soft.”

By the time Cleveland State (3-2) called a timeout with 13:08 remaining, Kentucky had outscored the Vikings 18-4 in the second half to open a 22-point advantage.

Cousins was whistled for a technical foul for throwing an intentional elbow at Cleveland State’s Jared Cunningham with 3:25 left after an official warned Cunningham for shoving Cousins in the back seconds earlier.

Cleveland State coach Gary Waters said his squad’s philosophy is to try and take the fight to the opponent, but he wasn’t thrilled with the way the referees handled the physical game. The Vikings were called for 25 fouls and attempted 15 free throws to Kentucky’s 35.

At one point in the second half, Cleveland State had been whistled for seven fouls while the Wildcats had not been penalized a single time.

“That’s how we play,” Waters said. “We’re aggressive and defend really hard and when you start getting those fouls you have to let up on how hard and physical you play a team. If they would have just gotten out of the way and let that game be played—and I won’t tell you who needed to get out of the way— the game could have been interesting. I don’t know if we would have won, but I thought we could have played much better. I think we could have stayed in that game if we had been allowed to play our defense the way we do.”

Kentucky won despite preseason All-American Patrick Patterson finishing with only nine points and five rebounds, both well below his season averages of 19 points and 12.3 rebounds. Patterson played just one minute in the second half because of what coach John Calipari called a slight ankle injury.

Cleveland State was led by Brown and reserve Jeremy Montgomery, who scored 10 points apiece.

Cousins had 14 points and seven rebounds for Kentucky, while Miller added nine points and eight rebounds.

John..poster #74...You are a moron. Typical UK fan. So you know UK has 7 NCAA titles and the most wins.....and? What else? You are one of those fans that only comes out when UK has a "chance" to be good. You hear grandma and grandpa say, "UK's gonna be good this year" and you suddenly jump out of the closet wearing blue. Everyone knows UK's tradition...why repeat it? Oh, and it's HEELS, not HEALS.

I have defended UK so far, but I am starting to wander. Another sub-performance from UK. Yes they are 6-0, but could easily be 4-2. many concerns.....no depth...no reliable 3pt shot(or threat)...perimeter defense. Don't be confused by CSU or Stanfords' shooting %'s...Alot of those misses were wide open opportunities. My wife is a huge Cat fan and I have told her, when the competition is equal to or better than that of UK"s....be weary. I can only assume Cal will fix the problems an if so, he'd better hurry. UNC, Uconn and a trip to Bloomington loom for the Cats. All three before mentioned teams will be better than anyone UK has faced to date. IU game will be very curious. All those frosh in a very hostile eviroment(first time).....it will be interesting.

#49 Yes I think you do Hate UK, But Thats OK..Because I hate all the ACC LOL!!! BTW..The CATS have taken 10 years off..and the best that PUKE and UNC could do is have 8 titles combined..Sad...And poor old coach K, been at Puke for 30 Years and only has 3....I noticed the pukies hit 18 threes..I love it, another live by the 3 die by the 3 season for Puke..LOL...I will say this R. WILLIAMS is BY FAR a better Coach than K..Maybe MY CATS won't win it this year or next, but the vacation is over...You guys had 5 years of UK dropping 10 games a year and you just couldn't run off with It...If Cal is here 1,2,3,4 years doesn't Matter Our PRES. and AD has learned a valuable lesson. You don't Hire a DRUNK......GO BIG BLUE!!!!!!

RT #57 SEC is better than the PAC 10, and the ACC and Big 12 aren't really that much better than the SEC this year top to bottom. Look at all the results from interconference games between the major conferences so far this year. The Big EAST is in a class of it's own and the Big 10 is solid this year... there isn't much to choose between the other conferences this year. Saying that the SEC is "by far the worst major conference" is an erroneous statement which just doesn't jive with reality. The SEC will likely see 5 NCAA tournament teams this year, and that will be inline with what the ACC and Big 12 put in.

To post #40, Bobby B., Yes Adolph Rupp was absolutely a racist. But so were many coach's of that era of NCAA basketball. It's just that Rupp's was more publicly and nationally scrutinized than other coach's of the day. That'll happen when all you do is win, and you're coaching one of the best college program's in the game.

For all those talking sh_t about Kentucky basketball, let's set the record straight. Really only UCLA has the right to talk smack, because they're the only one's with more national titles than Kentucky. And as for the Tar Heal fan's, you're still #2 on all time win's behind who? Oh yeah, Kentucky. North Carolina is going to get to 2000 all time win's very soon. But behind who, oh yeah Kentucky. So Heal fan's , Dukey fan's, whoever, when you've hung 7 banner's, going on 8, came back and talk smack. Until then, I'll only take it from the Bruin's fan's.

    #62... What's more pathetic?
    A. Getting excited about your team after a few down years.
    B. Going to another team's page just to badmouth that team.

Kentucky is extremely talented, but youth still worries me when it comes down to the National Championship. They'll be a very dangerous team for anybody though, and i'm predicting a Final Four appearance, and perhaps an appearance in the Championship if they mature quickly. If Carmelo & McNamara can do it, then I hold out hope that Wall & Cousins (and company) can do it.

I read a lot of stories on this site from al sorts of teams all over pro & college sports. Never do I see the amount of negative posts from people just popping in to hate on that team. I take that as a compliment, so you guys continue to make my day :)

By the way, who gives a rip about how strong a conference is in college basketball. In the end it's just the NCAA tournament that matters, so it's every man for himself anyway. Besides, the SEC has never been known for being a strong basketball conference, other than UK and Florida and maybe Vandy some years ago. The SEC has always been a football conference. That's why you don't hear fans of SEC basketball teams even talk about the conference as a whole.

Actually, roger V, Billy Donovan has never been a head coach at UK...he would be Florida's coach, if I'm not mistaken. Rick Pitino left on his own to coach the Celtics, then came back to UL, so no trashing there, either. Most of us wish he'd stayed. As far as Billy G, when a coach has a team with the talent that he had last year and they don't get into the NCAA tournament, THEN get beaten early in the NIT to boot, PLUS not wanting to relate to the UK fans or the media at all, he can expect to get the boot fairly quickly. UK would have been better off keeping Tubby than getting Gillespie. Tubby's problem was after a while he sort of let up on recruiting. That would be the reason that he only won one national championship, the one he got in his first year with a team full of Rick P's recruits.

Are you kidding me? So basically if they didn't call any of the numerous fouls your team committed then you would have played better? Too bad fouls are a part of basketball coach Waters. I would think by now you would have realized that being a head coach and all. While we are eliminating fouls lets go ahead and just eliminate the refs all together so that your team has some chance of winning.....wait even that won't help. Perhaps if the other team just doesn't show up?

Thats what I've heard about liggins. a little doobie rolling. i haven't heard that about Dodson though. He was supposed to have been a good kid. Maybe all of the intelligent, well thought about ramblings of Roger V below got to him and he needed to relax. Seriously Roger V. Either stop being a moron or go jump off a bridge. Or at least say something that has a hint of rational to hit.

I can understand some of the trash talk and chest thumping about conferences. It's just a pride thing. But with NCAA basketball it is basically irrelevant. In the end, basketball has a great tournament that decides who is the national champ. And that champ is a individual team/school not the conference. So other than bragging rights and money for the conferences, it doesn't matter how many teams from "your" conference make it to the tournament. It's only the insane football championship set up that warrants the discussion about strength of conference.

Glad to see some of you kentuckians can actually read and write. UK wont get a NCAA title this year. UK has too many young players as talented as they may be, it still doesnt matter. I am not a Kansas fan but they are favorites to win and they probably will. Teams like Villanova, Texas, and Mich St will be the other final four teams. Wall will be gone next year and probably Cousins and Patterson as well. You don't honestly think Cousins could make it through college level classes for more than one year do you? In the meantime, hope all the UK fans have fun thinking UK is a serious title contender and having intercourse with their sisters.
