Smith’s foul shots help Vols survive DePaul

ST. THOMAS, Virgin Islands (AP)—Tennessee’s reputation has been built on high-flying offense, but the 10th-ranked Vols flexed some defensive muscle Sunday night in the semifinals of the Paradise Jam.

Tyler Smith scored 14 points, including a pair of free throws with 13.7 seconds left, and the Volunteers held on to beat pesky DePaul 57-53.

“I’m going to give our defense credit tonight,” said Tennessee coach Bruce Pearl, whose team led the SEC in scoring his first four years. “You win games with defense and rebounding.”

Tennessee (4-0) came into the game averaging 114.5 points in its two previous wins, but found itself desperately trying to hang on against the heavy underdogs from the Big East.

The Blue Demons closed within 55-53 on Mac Koshwal’s hook shot with 44.5 seconds left, but the Vols ran off nearly 30 seconds before Jeremiah Kelly finally fouled Smith away from the ball. The veteran forward made both ends of the 1-and-1, and Will Walker missed a 3-pointer at the other end with a few seconds left to seal it.

The Volunteers will play No. 7 Purdue for the title Monday night.

“In the last two minutes, Tyler Smith and Wayne Chism showed their experience, and they acted like seniors and played like seniors,” DePaul coach Jerry Wainwright said. “We tried to slow them down a little more with our offense than our defense. We tried to grind it a little bit and made our possessions longer.”

It certainly showed.

The Volunteers thumped UNC Asheville 124-49 last week and routed East Carolina 105-66 two days earlier, but couldn’t get into the same offensive flow against the Blue Demons’ annoying man-to-man, ball-pressure defense.

They shot only 37.3 percent from the field (22 of 59) and were 3 of 12 from beyond the 3-point arc, while turning the ball over 15 times.

Koshwal and Walker each had 14 points for DePaul, while Eric Wallace added 10.

Tennessee led 33-24 at halftime on the strength of nine points from freshman guard Skylar McBee, but the Blue Demons rallied in the second half behind Walker, who scored 10 of his 14 points in a 2 1/2-minute stretch to pull them within 43-41 with 12:22 left.

Mario Stula added two free throws a few minutes later to give DePaul a 48-47 lead.

Smith made the first of two foul shots with 4:37 left to push Tennessee ahead, and Chism’s 3-pointer off an assist from Melvin Goins made it 53-49 moments later.

Chism added a jumper with just under 3 minutes left before Wallace and Koshwal got DePaul within 55-53 with under a minute to go—setting the stage for Smith’s clutch free throws.

“I was happy to be in a situation like that,” he said. “Coach Pearl trusts me with the ball in my hands, and that was a very big win for us because it was the first time this season we didn’t really hit shots from the outside.”

Tenneess had an "OFF" game but still WON...last year, that would've been a loss. Tennessee basketball is looking pretty good so far..

Refs let Depaul do a lot of hacking and holding last night. They called enough in the end to give the Vols the win, but it is usually the refs that do in the Vols. I love it how even the refs can't give some away vs us.
UK fans, get a life. Depaul would beat Miami, Oh, I'll bet, and we didn't need a buzzer beater to win like you did. Check out Calipari's great coaching- let Wall go coast-to-coast and make a shot. That is how he's always done, glorified streetball... That will get you tons of wins in conf USA, but Pearl already beat Cal & a #1 Memphis with more talent than the mildcats have now. Plus, you're losing all your good freshman to the draft every year from now on! Plus Patterson...
On second thought, maybe now IS the time to be@#$%y! You're undefeated, who knows how long that will last. Plus you have seniors. Soon you will be a rotating cast of flashy freshman and sophmores.

As a Tennessee fan I must admit that the SEC is still down. Just look at the records so far. The best teams in the SEC are Kentucky and Tennessee - in that order. Beyond those two teams, no other team is very good at all. Kentucky may dance for a while, but no other team from our conference will make it to the sweet 16. I hate to admit it, but its true.

Bruce has done a great job, but Tennessee is still not among the best in the country. Then again, there aren't any armed robbers on the team - I hope.

Despite losing, DePaul must feel much better about their prospects this season after what happened last year. To remain close and have chance to win against a running team like Tennessee, speaks volumes of this teams' character. The overall talent is vastly improved and could make some waves in the Big East as long as they continue to grow. Great performance guys, the wins will come!

#5 your pathetic. There are many good teams outside the SEC. All teams have good athletes and can compare to SEC teams. Pathetic...

    T. Bone said: "While Kentucky is off playing pansy teams like Rider (whoever they are) Tennessee is playing teams with credibility."

Seriously? UT hasn't even played a team that made it to the tournament last year. Kentucky at least played one team that made it to the tournament (Morehead State...)

Tennessee only played one team with a winning record - and that's the team that almost beat them. And that team played Northern Iowa and Columbia...which if I recall, aren't known for their basketball ability.

I think UT will be a fine team this year, but when a moronic fan is coming in claiming that UT has played teams with credibility, then I know that you're just blowing smoke out of your butt. It's the beginning of the season - top 25 teams only play other ranked teams in situations where they're in a season tip-off tourney.

Good luck to UT tonight against Purdue. Even as a die-hard SEC supporter, Tennessee fans make me regret that they're in the SEC because of the stupid crap that they spew. UT may have a good team this year, but their fans are morons.

Are you serious T Bone? Pearl has been dominating the SEC? Is that who won two titles for the SEC in the last ten years? No, I think that was Florida! And I'm a UK fan. Even when we sucked, we still beat UT when they were supposed to be at their best. Remember when you were a top 5 team and you lost 72-66 to an un-ranked UT team. Yeah, that happened!
And as for us winning by two vs Miami of Ohio, consider this. That was the first game that that group of starters had played together this season. That group includes FOUR freshman, in their second game of the year. And one of those freshman, Wall, was playing in his first game of the year. If you think about it, there are not many teams out there that can overcome an 18 point deficit. I bet UT wouldn't have. It's not like I haven't watched them. They'd start getting mad at each other and get blown out!
You can keep thinking that you are a better team than UK. You can think that Pearl will beat him like he did at Memphis. But remember this. UK is a looooong way from Memphis!! Cal will own Pearl and the SEC for many years to come!

Might want to go back and check out the teams they have played this year. Not sure where your getting credibility. Pansy teams ? Once again check who Tennessee has played. In fact check out the whole league. Everyone plays easy teams starting out.

Bobby B are you serious? Kentucky had to win at the buzzer to beat Miami..... of OHIO!!!! While Kentucky is off playing pansy teams like Rider (whoever they are) Tennessee is playing teams with credibility. The only reason Kentucky squeaks by like they do every year is because of their reputation not because they are any good. Face the facts my friend Bruce Pearl is dominating the SEC in basketball and will for a long time. Calipari couldn't beat him while he was at Memphis and he won't while he is at Kentucky!!!

"but the Vols ran off nearly 30 seconds before Jeremiah Kelly finally fouled Smith"

"Finally?" Sounds to me like the plan was not NOT foul him at all.
