Wall, Patterson lead No. 4 Kentucky by Rider 92-63

LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP)—Kentucky center DeMarcus Cousins saw Rider’s Brandon Penn pull up from well behind the 3-point line and stretched every last inch of his 6-foot-11 frame in an effort to get a hand on the ball.

Guarding an opponent 22 feet from the basket isn’t something Cousins does often. And he plowed into Penn as the ball clanged off the rim, but Cousins’ effort perhaps the surest sign that Kentucky coach John Calipari’s message to his team that it needed to get serious about defense had come through loud and clear.

Playing with the kind of intensity sorely lacking in its first three games, No. 4 Kentucky roared past the Broncs 92-63 on Saturday, hardly looking like the club Calipari called the “worst” defensive team he’s seen in 20 years following narrow escapes against Miami (Ohio) and Sam Houston State.

The Wildcats (4-0) held Rider to 31 percent shooting—including just 4-of-17 3-pointers—and added 10 steals and 10 blocks in easily their most complete game of the season.

“There has to be a sense of urgency defensively, we had that today,” Calipari said.

The urgency was necessary after Kentucky allowed the Bearkats and the RedHawks to combine for 33 3-pointers while nearly upsetting the Wildcats earlier in the week, games that proved to be eye-openers for both Calipari and his players.

The coach said he was “embarrassed” by his team’s apathy and let them know about it during a film session on Friday. Calipari spared no one—not even stars John Wall and Patrick Patterson—from some pointed if good-natured criticism.

“Some of it was almost hysterical,” Calipari said. “They were laughing at each other.”

Things were decidedly more serious on the court against the Broncs (2-2).

With the Wildcats shutting down Rider’s long-range shooting, Wall found plenty of room to go to work on the break. The freshman finished with 21 points, 11 assists and six rebounds as Kentucky took control early then kept the pressure on.

“Everybody played big,” Wall said. “I smiled more than I usually do because we were having a great time and we were playing defense. We have to do this every game.”

Calipari was happy to settle for just one game, particularly against the Broncs who had already knocked off Mississippi State and came in making 48 percent of its 3-pointers.

“I was fearful of this game until I saw how we defended early in the game and then I felt fine,” Calipari said.

Wall and Patterson—who had 19 points and 18 rebounds—did their best to put their coach at ease.

Ryan Thompson led Rider with 16 points, but the Broncs simply didn’t have the firepower to keep up.

“They made it hard on us,” said Rider coach Tommy Dempsey.

Kentucky outscored Rider in the paint 56-20 and had 24 second-chance points, but it was the perimeter defense that allowed the Wildcats to get on the break and let Wall go to work.

During one dazzling stretch in the first half Wall put together a series of spectacular moves in the open floor that showcased why he’s considered a can’t-miss NBA prospect.

On one break he completed a flawless 360-degree spin in the lane for a layup. Moments later he followed it with a steal, a basket and the foul.

The prettiest move, however, was a coast-to-coast sprint in which Wall dribbled the ball between his legs at full speed while switching from his left hand to his right hand. He made the layup while absorbing the contact then knocked down the free-throw to put Kentucky 27-14 with 8:16 to go in the first half.

“He’s as good as I’ve ever seen in the open floor,” Dempsey said.

And unlike Kentucky’s first three games, when the Wildcats relaxed when things appeared to be in hand, this time there would be no letdown.

Cousins and fellow freshman center Daniel Orton combined for 32 points and 12 rebounds and Kentucky received plenty of production off the bench after the starters scored all 102 points in the win over Sam Houston State.

Kentucky led 51-26 at the break and never let Rider get within 20 points the rest of the way. At times putting Patterson, Cousins and Orton on the floor together, the Wildcats had little trouble getting whatever they wanted inside.

It’s a combination they’ll need in Cancun. Kentucky plays Cleveland State on Tuesday and either Virginia or Stanford on Wednesday.

“We are just so far from where we need to be,” Calipari said. “But we were focused. They were more concerned about their teammates than themselves. We’re making strides.”

Jay, I dish it out after dorks do so first and you say I am the one dissing someone. I didn't start it like the cry babies on here did. I simply finished it my way. You are like all the rest then to say what you said. My opinion is just that, mine. Don't blame me for the decade of loser status KY has been in. I would have coached championship teams without a single superstar were the Cats my team. In my book, there is no room for second best!

As a UK fan I've been reading all of these posts on this page I've been thinking about my feelings about UK this year.

First off, from the way this team has looked so far this year I was a bit concerned about our 3pt defense, but in their last game against Rider (a very good 3-pt shooting team so far this year) I feel there is hope for it.

Second with the best recruiting class of the year (and possibly of all time) only good things can happen for UK. Even if they do play like freshman (which there is no reason to assume they wont sometimes) UK will still make it into the NCAA tournament. I've looked at their schedule and other than UNC, UCONN, and UL there isnt much competition until the SEC. If they can win just 2 of those three game I think they will be guaranteed a spot unless they completely implode in the SEC and only win like half of those game, and depending on the loses that might not even matter.

    Third: @Henry
Having read through all of your gems of posts on here I have come to the conclusion that if you are actually from Kentucky that you have not lived here for a long time and are bitter possibly because of this fact. You obviously dont like Kentucky and to be honest having someone like you living somewhere else makes me feel better, I would be disappointed if you were a UK fan, because people like you are why I hated UK for a long time. Also, you claiming to know how this season is going to end is a bit assanine, because unless you do have special insite into the future then there is no way for anyone to know...who knows UK could go undefeated and win the Tournament or they could lose 25 and not make the NIT, my point is noone knows and anyone that claims they are 100% sure are assuming they know and you know what you do when you assume "you make and @SS out of U and ME"

Hope everyone enjoys the game in a couple hours, I know im looking forward to it hopefully to see UK improve even further on Defense.

    Go Kats

Oh, just so HENRY doesn't talk about how ignorant I am, let me correct a statement made in my last post.

    Okay, here we go.

First off @ "roger v", how bout them Ole Miss Rebels..they really spanked tonight huh?

Second, HENRY, you know so much about basketball and all you talk about on here is how ignorant other people are....sounds to me like you have a complex. Oh, UK NIT bound?? Please, that just shows how much you really know about basketball!! Please make sure that you show up for a UK post around the season so that every UK fan on here can give you the "what for"!!

It's funny, because all UK haters talk about how much we are fanatics and expect too much, but I don't think we expect nearly as much as people think. I KNOW THAT WE WILL BE IN THE NCAA TOURNAMENT THIS YEAR!! All the haters, just accept it and move on. Stop hanging around UK threads because it just lets every UK fan know how much you hate your own team and wish that they were as good as KY!! Oh, HENRY, which are you...a MEMPHIS, UNC, DUKE, or KANSAS fan? Must be one of them as it shows horribly!!!! I love how people get on here and try to diss other people, like they know how intelligent they are...GET A FRICKIN LIFE MAN!!!

Cledus, I deal in reality. You will have to visit your witch doctor of whatever it is you use for your information to figure out if loser status includes the possibility of winning a lotttery. Not my department.

Pissed you off did I after answering your ignorant insults? How childishly you responded? But then, I should not expect different when visiting this site. I should have known intelligent civilized posting on this venue was not possible amongst idjits.

Carry on with you and find someone else who will come down to your level. My "intelligence" that has been commented on here leaves some posting members out of the loop of humanity, putting some of you in the category of subhuman capabilities. Not my department

Henry, you must be a real tough B****, who never lets the truth get in the way of your dreams. 40 years of basketball, you must have so much knowledge about the game, you must have it broken down at every level. Yeah, okay, is that why your just talking more S*** than Charmin, because you know nothing. Usually the loudest in the room is the dumbest in the room. Also, considering you know the future, can you give me the winning #'s for the Florida Powerball.

And James, don't bet your daughter. Or your pig farm. Or your fertizer pile for next years crop. KY won't even do better than 3rd or 4th in the SEC and in all likelihood is looking at 6th to 7th overall in the SEC. They are just a out of high school team with a veteran in Patterson who will have to make his own shots, same as last year but with less talent on the floor.

Back in the saddle here. No fake ID or anything, simply this web site gave both my first and last night at different times for some reason and there has never been shame regarding who I am. There is however the issue of SH&* for brains people out there who began insulting me right off the bat instead of talking basketball, of which I know that 40 years of it is more than the age of some of these D%CK BREATH scum! Proves you turkeys who disagree can't face the facts and live in a rubber doll world.

KY will not get past an invitation to the NIT and only because we draw bigger crowds and not because we will be classified as average winners. The powers that be would be stupid to leave a draw like KY out re: money. It's happened many times in the past and will happen again. Poor, poor KY. Let's give them a chance while (snicker snicker they make fools of themselves while we pull in the dollars for this NIT tournament). And of course KY will accept because pride shows no shame regardless of how shameful it becomes.

Roger V - I get it. You're still butthurt over the fact that Calipari selected to go with UK over Memphis. And the fact that you brag about having lived three blocks from him, literally sums up your issue with UK. Though I am not sure why you feel the need to be so bitter. Your new guy is doing just fine, as he's recruiting well and seemed to coach a good game the other night against KU. Focus on your team and stop hanging around UK threads all the time bashing a coach that simply wanted something better. You'd do the same thing if you were in his shoes (you'll deny it, but everyone knows it's true).

Congrats on your rout KY !! Oh, did you happen to see the Memphis score? What Crapalari is about is Cal. Cal first, KY, maybe second. Get to know him. He has a power team because he brought it with him after Memphis money recruited them. See how things go next year. Your team will be gone to the NBA. You really don't have a lot coming in. You and Cal should get along this year though. Cal is quite arrogant as well..

HENRY - If you seriously think UK will be going to the NIT this season then you are in dire need of immediate psychiatric evaluation. I am nowhere near the UK fanatic I once was, but I do believe in giving just credit where it is due. UK will be dancing in the NCAA tournament this year with a very high seed. I don't see them winning it all, but stranger things have happened (i.e. N.C. State, Villanova, etc).

yearicks - first you have to give factual statements and you havent done that. You've just been an opinionated lyin' jerk. Rattled? One doesn't have to be rattled to recognize slime such as you and comment on the drivel you post. Lmao at the intelligence you think you possess.

Why don't you just tell the truth about where you are from and who your team is. Roger V, as much as I dislike him, is at least honest in what he believes. I just happen to believe he is jealous and brokenhearted and vengeful. Whereas you are just a freakin' insulting liar. Go crawl back under your rock and learn something about basketball AND honesty.
