Syracuse runs away from No. 6 North Carolina

NEW YORK (AP)—Jim Boeheim has always made a point of telling the media not to get too caught up in runs because basketball, especially on the college level, is a game of runs.

He could only smile as he was asked about Syracuse’s 22-1 run to open the second half of an 87-71 victory over No. 6 North Carolina on Friday night in the championship game of the 2K Sports Classic.

“That’s about as good as it gets,” he said, “and it was against North Carolina and it was here.”

The Orange (4-0) were the only unranked team in the semifinals of the tournament that benefits Coaches vs. Cancer but they left Madison Square Garden with blowout wins over No. 13 California and the Tar Heels (4-1).

North Carolina had a 39-37 halftime lead but that was gone in a hurry as Brandon Triche and Arinze Onuaku had field goals in the first 40 seconds. By the time the run ended 8 minutes into the second half Syracuse had a 59-40 lead.

“We had to get rebounds and get out and push and they wanted me and Arinze to be more aggressive,” Triche said of the start to the second half. “We definitely responded and Wes played a tremendous game.”

Tournament MVP Wesley Johnson had 25 points for the Orange, who beat California 95-73 in the semifinals. Onuaku finished with 15 points and Triche had 11.

Johnson, a 6-foot-7 junior transfer from Iowa State, was 10 of 17 from the field, including making half of eight 3-point attempts, and had eight rebounds.

He was proudly wearing an orange—what else?—T-shirt that said “Shut It Down.”

“It’s all about energy,” he said. “We let up at the end of the first half. `Shut It Down,’ that’s the motto. We knew they would make a run and we had to counteract it and we did.”

Ed Davis had 16 points and 10 rebounds and Marcus Ginyard added 15 points for the Tar Heels, who lost almost all of a 19-point second-half lead before beating No. 15 Ohio State 77-73 to reach the title game.

North Carolina missed its first 13 shots of the second half and turned the ball over six times as the Orange just didn’t miss. Syracuse started the half by making 10 of its first 14 shots and the baskets were coming down low from Onuaku and from the perimeter including a 3 by Johnson that made it 57-40.

“Two air balls on our first two shots and then two turnovers. Our first four possessions of the second half we don’t even hit the rim,” North Carolina coach Roy Williams said. “We didn’t have an answer for guarding Wes and it was the snowball effect from there. It’s frustrating no question about that. We’ve got to play better and they’re good.”

The Tar Heels closed to 68-60 on a 3 by David Wear with 7:04 left, but Onuaku had the first and last baskets of a 6-0 run that ended any thoughts of a comeback for the ages.

“We made two really good plays right in a row and got it right back up because they’re going to keep coming at you,” said Boeheim, who earlier this month became the eighth Division I coach to reach 800 wins.

The first half had the crowd, which was split almost evenly between Carolina Blue and Syracuse Orange, on a ride of runs that kept Madison Square Garden in a constant roar more accustomed to late in the season than late November.

Syracuse scored the first eight points of the game and was up 11-2 when Andy Rautins hit a 3.

It didn’t take long for North Carolina to get right back in it as the Tar Heels scored 11 straight points, including two 3s by Will Graves.

There were four lead changes and four ties the rest of the half, which ended with the Tar Heels leading 39-37. It wasn’t a perfect half as both teams had 10 turnovers.

Syracuse lost 82-79 to Division II LeMoyne in an exhibition game earlier this month. The Orange fell off the national radar after that and were even an afterthought when the best teams in the Big East were listed. Not anymore.

“I’d hate to play that non-Division I team that beat them,” Williams said.

Ohio State beat California 76-70 in the third-place game.

looks like Syracuse is ranked 7th and rising, and deserving, they have a very good ball club. They will aslo get much better. Only concern I have with this team is of course foul shooting. They will have to figure that out. They make thier foul shots, look out, will be tough to beat in the Big East Conference, when play begins.

Tyler Hansbrough is weak, the only reason why you would ever consider him as being a great college player is simply because all the other real ballers joined the NBA. Your such a buster. The dumbes and most senseless comment of all time. UNC didnt need Tyler Hansbrough last year, you freakin idiot. all he did was back himself towards the rim and hope for getting a foul. His game is so tired, just like your tired comments.

PsychoT_Rules you missed all the points I was making, I never said North Carolina wasn't a great program, I only assured that. The point I was making was that UNC was great before Roy showed up, or did u miss that . North Carolina was a perinial power way before Syracuse was on the map. Since Jimmy B began coaching in 1976, and has 802 wins, three final championship appearances. He built the program. Jimmy is a great coach. And by the way, dont be upset because Syracuse waxed North Carolina. Do your home work young buck. UNC beat Syracuse, if I recall corectly in the last 30 years, once, and that was at UNC when they had Michael Jordan in the earky 80s. As far as fans go, UNC fans are weak, you have never seen a crown or a place like the Carrier Dome, Syracuse averaged 30 thousand plus, and speaking of recent success, Unc is done this year , no guard play, they stink. Dont count on your recruited class to do much, Because you landed Harris, who cares, Syracuse is ranked 5th with Fab Melo, the Cuse will slapped UNC. Why dont you go and play basketball with Dick Vitale, Mr gravy train himself.

And to the poster who said that Psycho T was not the best player of this decade, I say-- name somebody better. You can't. Certainly no one whose contributed as much over his whole career. You might name some good one year players, but no one who hasn't jumped to the NBA after 1 or 2 years. Tyler Hansbrough is the player of the decade. Period. Case closed.

Don't talk to me about 2003. I know Jimmy B mustve done something illegil in recruiting to get Melo. I don't count 2003. Show me another season this decade with legal players that you've done anything great. Can't? Didn't think so. I don't need to remind you of our dominance the past 5 years. And, oh yes, sorry to inform you that it will continue for the next 5 years.

And don't tell about your league this or your league that. I don't care about this conference or that. Don't hide behind your conference. It's about your school. What have they done? Nothing? Didn't think so.

Do yourself a favor and switch your allegiance to a real team. Go buy some UNC gear and maybe you can call yourself a winner.

For the poster who said THansbrough is the best college player of the decade, stop smoking crack. He's about the most overrated player of the decade.

#165 The reason Dickie V is so biased with ACC is because u got a coach that has the best win percentage in ncaa tourney history, u got a coach who has the best win/loss percentage of all times, program who ruled college basketball in getting back to back titles since UCLA, a team that won a title in 2002 and wasnt suppose to, a team that has won two tiltles in 4 year span with two totally different squads!! Only them and Uconn can say that!! So when we talk about Dickie V; he just calling what he sees? Every year the ACC is dynamic in college basketball!!! Oh yeah!! Those coaches havent been coaching for 40 years either!!! Stop being jealous and get over it. We got titles!!!!!!!!!

Dick Vitale is ACC bias always has been...which makes him sound like an idiot on T.V. Bottom line an unranked team beat the crap out of the number 12th and number 4 or 6 ranked teams in the country. That's not a fluke either Syracuse is very good or Cal and UNC were way over-rated. I laugh at all these excuses UNC is young give me a break… no UNC just over-rated basketball is not football, that why Lebron James, Kobe, Garnett, Tracey, etc. etc can skip collage and go straight to the pros, either you a ball-er or you not a ball-er. Wasn’t there a young team we called the fab five that was pretty good with five freshman, oh how about that young Louisville team that Denny Crum had back in the day.

I watched both games Cuse’s defense was awesome, like in almost every sport good defense equate to wins.

Conference play will be different for cuse, because those teams are used to playing against the 2-3 zone, but with that said they're a very good team.

The big east has not loss a non-conference game so far this year...very impressive!

This was not a suprise game for either team. If you had viewed the previous night, it was more then clear that 'Cuse's speed would produce a lot of points off the UNC's turnovers. Besides the turnovers is the players focus and intensity through out the game. It happened in the last ten mintues against the Bucks and the start of the second half against the Orangemen. Plus a lot of credit is given to 'Cuse for playing so dominant in second half. Just what do you think was said in the locker room at half time. Must had been a damn good speech. The players played hard for Jim B. Tell me you would not play hard in that event and at MSG. Great win, and hopefully the loss will help the players learn how important it is to play from end to end. And the coaching staff will to get to the board on running the right plays and the correct defenses with the talent they have.
As for Roy, he is a proven coach. Yes UNC brings the players, because it is UNC. Roy must being doing something right to win two championships. But I will be the first to admit it seems at times he lacks creativity and timing. How many times are you going to run the screen at the top of the key at the end of the game being down by a basket? Coach K and dookies showed how well Roy can be defended due to his predictablity. And I do wonder why the turnovers are so high? Protecting the ball is a very coachable skill. Just as well as free throws. UNC has improved in that area but they still go through games where too many are missed when the heat is on. Just as they had done against the Buckeyes. There are times I would like to see the bench be played more at the end of the game when there is a lead. When a team has a 13 point lead with ten mintues left to go, four bench players should be on the floor if not five. Tell them to play tough D, protect the ball and take a shot in last 8 seconds. When the lead gets cut two possesions then bring back in the rested starters. Of course if the flow is going in a different direction then be able to see and make any adjustments if need be. The coaching staff seems to miss this in some the games. Of course there are the times it don't make damn bit of difference what you do.
Look for the Heels to win 20 games this season if they can survive Dec. If playing against MS, UK, and Texas does not get you ready for season then I do not know what will. A much as I am a fan of the Heels I will be happy if they can win one of the three. Overjoyed if it is more. The out of conference games will help the team to find their flow and get ready for the ACC. If UNC wins only 18 games and goes .500 in conference then they will make an at large bid. UNC will be a very dangerous team in March. Especially in the sweet 16.
Of course the only thing I care about is BEAT THE dOOKIES!!!!!!!!!!!! Hook'um Heels.

    151. If UNC can brag about having the best recruiting class, then why did they lose?

Because theyre all young. Whenever u lose Ty Lawson, Ellington, and Psycho T (the best college player of the decade) your gonna have some issues at the start of the next season. duh

    160. just don't care for Roy he sold out Kansas.

Roy didnt sell out Kansas - he took a job with a better school. Why wouldnt he? UNC is the best most winniest program in the history. weve got the best nba players, the best coaches, the best school, best fans, of course hed come back.

Maybe syrcacoose can just wait to talk smack until youve won a championship. Where is you're banner? Didnt think so. Why, because your school sucks. The only thing that sucks worse than your team, is your fans. Thats why u cant get top recruits. If you were a top high schooler, why would u want to go to Syracoose? The school? sucks. The fans? dumb. The cheerleaders? ugly. The coach? dorky looking The weather? hahaha Face it. You better enjoy this one win, cuz thats all youll ever get.

Sean, since you decided to jump in. Let me throw this at you real quick. Roy Rodgers would have a hard time winning 200 more games when he will probably retire, secondly, he never rebuilt North Carolina, North Carolina, are you joking, they were college basketball before there weree college basketball. Please do not tell us and everyone out there that Mr Roy has anything to do with thier success, please stop, before I choke..................Jimmy built Syracuse, Roy Williams did not build North Carolina, the hardest thing about recruiting at North Carolina is trying to figure out who your starting five is gonna be...... get your facts right, you seem like a nice kid, stop banging your monkey Kid, you sound like Dicky V....and he doesn't sound too smart. later

#154, just a comment, who has the banner hanging now? Oh yeah, UNC right next to 5 other ones. By the way, I watched them hang it. Williams rebuilt Kansas and the current Tarheels are all his, no leftovers from before. Give Williams 12 more years and he will have 800 wins also. These Heels are young and they obviously are not Hansbrough and company, but give them time. I don't expect a title this year, but they will be in the mix. Come January, they will be worthy of a top 10 ranking and will be vastly improved. Nothing wrong with loosing to the 'Cuse, good team with a good coach. They will learn from this, God help Gardner Webb on Monday.

psyco you are so intelligent with your rediculous comments, you sound like Vitale who has piggy back your Heels for two decades, he sounds dumb with his shooting off of the mouth agaisnt Syracuse and yes, thats Syracuse not Syracoose you moron. Secondly, Roy Williams is a buster. I am not going to knock Carolina cause Dean did great job, and yes the Heels success has little to do with Roy Rodgers Williams, what a front runner. You buster. Say hello to Wes Johnson, you clone......

#151 U are a circus clown!!!! Doink da clown to be exact!! When Cuse can win 2 national titles in 4 years, lead the Ncaa in final four apperances, be the second winningest team in history, run your conference every season then talk. Uconn, Pitt and Louisville have clearly shown they run the Big East. Syracuse got a good jab at Unc but i want to see them win the title again!! Until then be jealous of Tarheels success!! Stay out of those big tents!!
