NEW YORK (AP)—There was so much to talk about after No. 6 North Carolina held on for 77-73 victory over No. 15 Ohio State in the 2K Sports Classic semifinals Thursday night.

There was the Tar Heels’ big early lead that dwindled to two points in the final minute, something that can happen even to a sixth-ranked team early in the season. There was the exceptional defensive job by Marcus Ginyard on Ohio State’s Evan Turner, something that has become common for a player considered one of the top stoppers in the country. There was coach Roy Williams’ halftime rant directed at Ginyard, something that never happens.

“I chewed his rear end out probably the hardest I’ve ever got on him,” Williams said of the fifth-year senior. “If I’m going to chew him out, it scares the dickens out of the rest of the team. He’s one of my pets.”

The one-way halftime discussion worked as North Carolina was in control until the final minute.

“That was the worst I can remember,” Ginyard said of Williams’ yelling session. “But he was right. If I’m going to be a leader of this team I have to play better, and I did in the second half.”

Ginyard finished with 13 points and was 3 of 5 from 3-point range. But it was his defense on Turner that made the difference in the win that sent the Tar Heels (4-0) into Friday night’s championship game against Syracuse, which beat No. 13 California 95-73 in the tournament the benefits Coaches vs. Cancer.

“No question, I take challenges like tonight very personally, and I get really excited about facing players like him,” Ginyard said of Turner, who had a triple-double in Ohio State’s opening win over Alcorn State with 14 points, 17 rebounds and 10 assists. He matched that feat against the Tar Heels, but it was a lot different as he finished with 23 points, 11 rebounds and 10 turnovers.

The 6-foot-7 junior swingman, who had 17 rebounds in each of the first two games, couldn’t go anywhere on the court without Ginyard, who missed most of last season with a stress fracture in his left foot.

Turner’s time was limited as well by foul trouble, and his second personal was an offensive drawn by Ginyard.

“It was a rough night, obviously,” Turner said. I’m bumped and bruised and I’ll be back tomorrow.

“It was a rough first half, rough first 30 minutes of the game. They did a great job, and we just got to bounce back.”

Deon Thompson had 15 points and 12 rebounds for the Tar Heels, who led by 19 points with 10:23 to play.

The Buckeyes (2-1) finally started hitting from the outside at the same time the Tar Heels starting missing free throws, and Ohio State was within 75-73 on a 3 by Jon Diebler with 11 seconds left.

Larry Drew II, who missed four of his previous six free throws in the final minute, then made two from the line with 11 seconds left for the final margin.

“I wanted the ball in my hands, especially for the last two free throws,” Drew said. “You have to go through bad times to enjoy the highs, and I enjoyed making those last two free throws.”

Ohio State chipped away at the lead and was finally within single digits when David Lighty scored on a drive that made it 68-60 with 2:09 to go. Ginyard hit a 3 with the shot clock winding down to make it 71-60 with 1:36 to go, but the Buckeyes finally hit from the outside as William Buford and Lighty hit 3s as Drew struggled at the line.

Will Graves had 14 points for North Carolina, the defending national champions who have only one starter back from the team that beat Michigan State in April, and Drew finished with 11 points and eight assists and was 6 of 10 from the line.

Diebler had 17 points for Ohio State, which finished 6 of 21 from 3-point range after going 1 of 10 in the first half.

“We feel very fortunate,” Williams said. “We have a chance to be a very good basketball team, but I want it a lot sooner than it’s coming.”

The Tar Heels had the lead to 10 points within the first 6 minutes, and it reached 16 points three times, the first at 29-13 on a 3-pointer by Ginyard with 5:40 left in the half.

Ohio State missed its first nine 3-point attempts, and the Buckeyes finished 1 of 10 from beyond the arc and shot just 29 percent (9 for 31) overall in falling behind 38-24 at the half.

“We obviously made a great comeback,” Ohio State coach Thad Matta said. “I thought the first half we couldn’t get the ball in the basket. We had some decent looks, the shots weren’t falling for us. We had a stretch where I think we lost our composure, and they were able to get it to a double-digit lead. … Hopefully we learned a lesson there getting ourselves ready to go right from the start.”

Julie I would have to agree with you. UNC has been thought of as young from the beginning yet they have more veterans than UK and yet UK has been touted as being the team other than Kansas to beat. If it was up to me I would change the story line to UK youth and UNC minus HALF. There should be more pressure on UNC than UK because over half there team was there last year in the championship game and UK only has 2 players that have even played in the tournament and a bunch of talented FRESHMAN!!! But hey thats the media for ya.

Oh yea, Did I mention I too think UK is way OVER RATED? Try earning it and stop your whinning

George, thank you for giving Roy, a hall of fame coach, the tremendos advice.Gee, I hope he is watching. And Julie. UNC has been under the national microscope all season so boo hoo when whoever "they" is critiques your beloved wildcats.

I'm a UK and OSU fan. I think it amazing that they reported that KY was overrated because they haven't been playing up to par this year. But, UNC (#6) only beat OSU (#15) by 4 points and they are just "young" but will get better as time progresses. What about them being overrated?

The Tarheels had a big meltdown at the end of the game against Ohio State. Roy Williams needs to dissect this play-by-play, player-by-player to understand where the problems were and make sure that this never happens again or, if it does, that player changes are made QUICKLY.

Williams watched the meltdown without taking prompt action. Drew was missing from the foul line and Ohio State kept fouling him. Drew should have been replaced with a good foul shooter to stop this.

This is almost embarrassing but I have to agree with Scott again. It wasn't the goal tending that wasn't called that was the game changing missed call. If you look at the tape, you will see that with 17:34 left in the 1st half, Ginyard clearly shuffled his feet before making the dunk. THAT was without doubt the game changing missed call. Come on people, there were 114 shots and 35 turnovers in that game. Cherry picking one or two plays is always possible, and quite meaningless. Except in the perception of many, in REALITY, the first two points of the game count just as much as the last two. Cherry picking a call is usually done by the LOSER.

I'm a Bama fan (we were beaten by CORNELL!!!!!) so I try to look at teams outside the SEC objectively, but am not always able. This is the best Buckeye team I have seen in over a decade. I was really impressed with the step up in pressure at the end of the game, not fun if you're the opposition. They have size to compete with a Kentucky and the quickness to compete with a Memphis, five good athletes out on the floor at all times. I think this team can play with anybody, and who knows who the top five teams are right now? I know it's early, but watch for the Buckeyes to make a run in the tournament this coming spring.

If all these so-called experts keep expecting UNC to play as smooth and exciting as last years team, you are wasting your time.Different team, different year. You can watch every game this year and you wont see bball played that well by no team in the country. So you can put em down or hype them up,whatever.I think there are a lot of teams with talent, but its going to come down to who gets hot in March and April.Kansas has already annointed theirselves champions,as has Kentucky faithful.Dook always think they are the shiznit.UNC expects to be there every year also.Did you hear the list of pros from CAROLINA that Dickie V shouted out.No wonder everybody hates Carolina. They clearly are a basketball factory that never quits producing.Quit hating on the Heels and just bring it.

Surf_Tide I agree with Scott...that IS Duke you are talking about. It's DUKE that get's all the calls (though I can't for the life of me figure out what Coach K is whining about to the refs since he's already getting all the calls).

UNC's gonna be more than fine. UK as well. Remember, you are both starting a bazillion freshmen (different from sophs, etc. who are new to a lineup). They need to figure out how to play defense. They've never had to do that before. Brilliant offensively - easy - they have the talent and the experience scoring, though they do need to learn how to play off others in college, vice being the only person on the court in high school. But defense is a bit tougher for the super frosh. New experience, big learning curve. If you score 15 and give up 13 (spread out over a number of players usually), the net is 2 points. Score 15 and give up 8, the net is 7. They will get to the net 7 in time, so will UK. UNC has the advantange though with Ginyard and Thompson - they played exceptional defense and covered for the babies very well.
Gonna be a great season all around. Wish we played UNC a bit earlier. No doubt by the time we get around to them, I suspect they babies will have even the defense down pat.

Surf_tide. Thanks for getting up here on crack! Thats Duke your talking about. Yes the whistle blew way to often and I think that hurt BOTH teams. To the guy that said if they call that goal tending we got a tie game- I'll see your goal tending and match you that non-foul just after that where Lighty gets 2 at the line, Now we're back even and have the same results: UNC wins. UNC played sloopy and got complacent at the end plus OST kept playing hard and found a weakness in Drew ( Very Smart ). That made the game interesting with 45 sec to go. There will always be a IF this or that had happened, the results would be differant. Alot of bad calls against BOTH teams made this a BORING A$$ game. I wish the Refs had put there whistle away cause it looked like both teams wanted to RUN..

My Heels are young. Still, an impressive show of defense for a young team. Usually, that's where young teams lack composure, defensively. Therefore, it was nice to see that ol Roy has them in midseason form on that end. A few more games and the offense will begin to flow better. The twins will be a great tandem all season, especially with Deon, Ed Davis and Zeller already commanding the post downlow. Marcus Ginyard might be the best defender in the country, definitely the ACC. Keep pushing hard UNC; the Final Four is straight ahead. GO HEELS!!!

bucks are good and unc slowed down on d and and got sloppy on offense.said it before -if the guards play well, unc is a monster and yeah ,why haven't i heard much about the cuse, they look like they have good big men and the all important talented point guard ,top 10 ish. most importantly my thoughts are truly with the spielmans after their loss. i have had all too much experience with this. with her well respected stature as a measure i'm sure her family is strong! this tourney and the jimmy V support a very important cause.

Steve...Welcome to the ACC...All Calls for Carolina. Been that way for a long time...even when they weren't good, they would get the calls to keep them in games. Roy picked up where Deano left off in the whining dept.

I wonder where they got those referees from for this game, out of the YWCA or something? Evan Turner has been making the same moves for 3 years and seldom has had carries or offensive fouls called on him. 6 carries and 3 offensive fouls, all of which, and i kept dvr playing them over to see where, and there was not one carry on any of them. Pretty tough to get in a flow when the whistle blows every 5 seconds, and even Dick Vitale was getting frustrated, so how could the players not be? Then with 5 minutes to go they stopped, and OSU blows away a 19 point lead. Would have been a different story in this one without the whistle blowers.

I know there's a lot of haters about UNC but just remember, this is a young team after winning the championship last year. Just a reminder that they're still going to make the ACC a fight again. Go Heels. Steve, Oakland,Calif.

I wouldn't call Ginyard's defense good when the player, Turner, he was guarding got a triple double, regardless of whether or not it's less than Turner's other games. Ugly game, but overall I'm glad UNC won this match-up. I'm a Duke fan, but i was pulling for the ACC here over the Big Ten.
