Top-ranked Jayhawks hold off Memphis 57-55

ST. LOUIS (AP)—In the rematch, Kansas missed the free throws and Memphis had the final shot.

The Jayhawks won again, but not without a tougher-than-expected fight from the undermanned and supposedly overmatched Tigers.

Cole Aldrich had 18 points, 11 rebounds and blocked five shots, helping No. 1 Kansas overcome a sloppy night to hold off Memphis 57-55 in a rematch of the 2008 national championship game Tuesday.

No miracles from Mario, no confetti flying from the rafters, but still another exciting finish.

“I can tell you this for sure: I’m 32 but I’m getting out at 35,” Memphis coach Josh Pastner said. “I don’t know how these coaches coach until they’re 70. It’s unbelievable.”

Kansas (2-0) managed to lead most of the night despite 21 mostly sloppy turnovers, but couldn’t shake the scrappy Tigers.

Memphis (1-1) closed within three on Doneal Mack’s 3-pointer with a minute left, then cut the lead to 56-55 on Elliot Williams’ long 3 with 17 seconds left. Sherron Collins hit 1 of 2 free throws at the other end to give Memphis a final chance, but Williams’ contested 3-pointer clanged off the back iron.

Williams thought the shot was in. The Jayhawks held their breath until it caromed away.

“We’ve known for the past few days that they’re really going to give us a challenge and it proved to be right,” Aldrich said.

Memphis wasn’t supposed to have much of a chance against the depth and talent of Kansas, and had a miserable night from 3-point range, hitting 6 of 25. The Tigers hung around with scrappy defense, keeping the score low and the Jayhawks within reach far longer than anyone expected against the nation’s top-ranked team.

Williams had 21 points to lead Memphis, 0-9 all-time against No. 1 teams.

A loss, but a step in the right direction.

“The message we sent is that nobody is going to run over us,” Williams said.

The last time these teams played, it turned into one of the greatest games in Final Four history.

That was 18 months ago. These aren’t the same teams. Not even close.

Collins is the only major contributor left. Aldrich, despite outplaying North Carolina’s Tyler Hansbrough in the semifinals, logged four minutes in the final. The rest of the Jayhawks were either buried on the bench or watched it on TV.

Memphis’ Pierre Henderson-Niles, Willie Kemp and Mack played a combined seven minutes in the title game. None of the other Tigers were even on the roster.

Different teams, certainly a different feel.

The Tigers came out jittery, shooting airballs and wild 3-pointers that caromed high off the glass, getting their pockets picked from behind.

Kansas played out of control out of the gate, forcing up shots, turning it over on poor post entry passes and weak dribbles into the lane.

At the 15:55 mark, Kansas led 4-2.

“I thought we really got sped up,” Kansas coach Bill Self said. “Some of the plays we made in transition, we really got sped up.”

Fed up with the foolishness, Self yelled out to Collins: “1 game, get the ball to the big fella.” The Jayhawks did and Aldrich hit a layup, then a rebound slam before sitting out the final 1:34 after picking up his second foul.

Kansas went right back to the big fella in the second half.

Tyshawn Taylor found Aldrich on an alley-oop to open the half and Collins set up another dunk on an over-the-top pass to the post. That seemed to jump start the Jayhawks, who finally pushed their lead to double digits, 38-28 on Henry’s fastbreak layup.

Aldrich added a dunk on a dish from Collins to put Kansas up 52-45 with just under 3 minutes left. He finished 7 for 10 from the field after taking just five shots against Hofstra on Friday.

“I saw him in high school a bunch and I knew he was going to be good,” Pastner said. They do a real good job with their bigs. He’s a future pro.”

The Jayhawks needed every bit of what Aldrich gave them.

Collins, Kansas’ leading scorer, had 12 points and couldn’t play down the stretch while struggling with leg cramps. Former Memphis recruit Xavier Henry seemed too amped up at times—Tigers’ fans booed him plenty early—scoring 11 points on 3-of-11 shooting and turning it over four times.

Taylor had seven turnovers, most on forced passes in traffic, and the Jayhawks could only get off five 3-point shots—making one—against Memphis’ pressure defense.

“Hopefully, it’ll be a good teaching tool for us,” Self said.

this was a very exciting game, i knew memphis was gonna lose, but they lost by 2 with a chance to win at the end, just if the attempt was just a little softer we be celebrating now but congrats to kansas on a good win. I think Memphis will do good this year, i know this is a rebuilding year but next year will be great with the recruiting class coming in. GO TIGERS.

ernest- Assemble a team the way he did? Explain.....please. Did he force Wall and Cousins to go to KY? Did he force Henry to go to Kansas? Maybe you should rag Self as well? Kids follow coaches all the time. Isn't that their right? Those kids chose Memphis because of Calipari and when he went to Kentucky they chose to follow. Is Cal supposed to say no? Again, not his fault they chose to follow him to UK.

aaacats99, you must be thinking of something else. I didn't say he was going to do it to KY. I've read several other people saying that though. I'm sure Cal new nothing about the alleged SAT test. It imagine it was one of those " just see that he passes it. I don't want to know anything else". It's hard for me to understand how a KY fan would respect a man who got a team for them the way that he did. I believe KY people aren't that naive. It's not just me cat man. Looks like the bulk of the people who don't see this, are the people in the Lexington KY area. Kharma is looming around the corner. You've made it clear that you are confused.. How's next years recruiting going for you?

Last post was intended for roger....sorry ernest. But to you both and the rest of the memphis fan base. If you'd get over the Calipari hangover, you might just realize a couple things. One: You have a really good YOUNG coach who can apparently recruit(great class coming in next yr). Two: Memphis has a pretty good team and looked very good against KU. Doesn't appear to me the program was left in as bad as shape as you seem to think.

Ernest, maybe should read a post a little better as well....I mentioned two people in the post, not just you. As far as research, I don't need research when I have a pretty reliable source within my own family. You act as if UK sat around and waited for Calipari to have a great recruiting class, then swooped him away. C'mon, you really believe that? Why hire Billy G before Calipari? Cal was not interested in the Kentucky job @ the time of Smiths release. Billy G was a hot coach @ the time(same as Miller @ Xavier, who was pursued by UK) and the rest is history. Two awful years of the most un-organized coached years in KY history led to a job opening, Calipari becomes UK's target due to, one: His style of play(big for UK), two: He wins and three: His ability to recruit. Calipari's personality was and will be a perfect fit for the UK program(another major factor). As far as Calipari not being able to get the "blue chipper"....are you serious? If he can persuade kids to come play for him @ Memphis(non BCS), no major market, decent facilities, etc..I assure you he can get those same caliber players to come play @ UK.

Golly roger, can't you just celebrate a great game and get off the Calipari-bashing express? I'd be talking about the bright future of Memphis basketball, you're still hung up on its dark recent past. No harsh words for Xavier Henry for jumping ship even though it wasn't to UK? How about Nolan Dennis who went to Baylor? I've given examples of players jumping with their coaches to new programs, yet you still keep saying it's never happened before this. Were these the first blue chips he ever signed at Memphis? Absolutely not. So why didn't UK hire him before? Oh, I forgot. They were conspiring to wait because they knew this year's class would be one of the best ever assembled. Unfortunately, the plan went awry when 2 top-flight players actually didn't come to Kentucky. Yes, it was all a grand conspiracy, and had absolutely nothing to do with Billy Gillispie's absolute lack of coaching feel. Do you honestly think If Gillispie had got UK 21 wins and kept the streak of consecutive tourney appearances going he would have lost his job? Not a chance. The problem wasn't so much that UK was losing, it's HOW the 'Cats were losing. There were a lot of games where the entire squad looked absolutely lost. You forget that UK basically forced out a National Championship-winning coach to hire Gillispie. The standards are different here, fair or not, ridiculous or not. It wasn't like Gillispie was an utter failure at recruiting either. He pulled 3 5 stars and 5 4 stars in 2 years here, so it wasn't like UK couldn't possibly land talent without Calipari. Hate Calipari all you like (I know you will, you can't stop ranting about it), but, as I said before, at least make a legitimate case, not a bunch of outlandish claims.

krice, perhaps you should do a little more research before posting.....1, i didnt mention Calamari cheating.......2, he was of NO interest to UK before he had the best class in history coming in. And that was a non factor in his hiring? Why not hire him instead of Billy G then? Because he is NOT a very good coach. Average to say the least..He is the best salesman in the business and surrounds himself with very very good asst. coaches. He WILL NOT GET CAUGHT CHEATING at UK. He is under a tremendous microscope now. Now watch his recruiting status sink totally.. WWW will be out of the picture and so will Cal before long. He is the most despised man in college basketball, not just from fans but the entire basketball community...etc coaches, aau etc. Call me what you may, but sit back and watch his stock fall fast because he will no longer get the top caliber players..

Ernest/Roger- Calipari's recruiting class had nothing to do with him being offered the job @ UK. His ability to RECRUIT and then coach those he recruits was two of the many reasons Kentucky wanted him. Those kids made the choice to go to Kentucky and that is their right. You guys need to make up your minds about Calipari, was he a cheat or not? You say the NCAA cleared Rose to play and found no wrong doings. Wouldn't that clear Cal? You bash him of his past dealings while @ Umass....then celebrate his hiring to Memphis, only to fire that shell @ him when he leaves. The facts about his hiring? I know quite a few alum through my wife and my brothers ties with UK. Both my brothers are major contributors to the program, so I am quite sure I have a little insight on the process. Again, I really don't have a dog in this fight(Indiana fan) but it is what it is.

Obviously cdavis you must not have watched the game to see that collins was hurt for the better part of the second half and only came back in with 3 minutes to go because as he said we have 3 minutes to win the game....and then he came in and helped win it despite trying to miss the free throws at the end to lose it.

Hell Mac you don`t got to tell me anything about that weasel cheat calipari....just look in his damn eyes when he talks about something and you can tell he`s a cheat and a liar...his body language gives it away and he will fail and bring kentucky down.....he won`t go down with the ship either...you know that all too well now. The problem is Kentucky will do anything to win also...so it`s a pretty good fit until his dumbass gets caught.Which is inevitable now because there are too many coaches and alumni out there from a couple other schools that despise him. They will rat him out in a heartbeat and it wont take 3 years to happen...mark my word mac...good luck to memphis and perhaps we may meet again come tourney time.

ernest, i'm kind of confused here. you hate calipari because he left you with a vacated final four for cheating and say he will do the same at kentucky. but, you say the ncaa cleared rose to play and that mistake was on them, not memphis or for that matter calipari. so in your mind, when did he cheat at memphis? you seem to be a religious man with your ''lying wife vs. satin? comments'' well right now god is shaking his head at you saying, ''damn son, i tried to bless you with a brain. why don't you friggin' use it'' yes, god censors himself on blogs

how many final fours has gonzaga been to? Oh i forgot they just have to be competitive because they arent a bcs type school and that makes their coach great because he takes them to the tourney and wins a game or 2 every year....sounds like a missouri except it s farther west...the tiger fans for years all they think of is beating kansas...if they would concentrate on the big picture maybe some day they would get to a final four...and i emphasize the A final four....cant wait to whip that tiger ass again this year.

That's what I been trying to tell you Bub. Now Cal gets to play with the big boys. I'm looking forward to severeal of these games, and seeing what he's going to be able to do recruiting. So far, not much.. Pastner in Memphis has recurited teh #1 class so far. Did Cal leave the wrong one behind!? And, when he told Pastner to pass on KY and take the UM job, he neglected to mention to Pastner that there was an NCAA investigation looming.... What a jerk.... again ...... Kharma gonna getcha !!!! I'll be watching a lot of KY basketball this year. GO WHOEVER IS PLAYING AGAINST KY !!!!!, and mostly TIGERS !!!

You have to admit that Gonazaga is a far better team that they are credited with being. I don't know much about Memphis, but the Zaga are a top 25 team. They also have one of thee best coaches in the NCAA game.
