Smith helps No. 9 Duke rout Charlotte, 101-59

DURHAM, N.C. (AP)—Mike Krzyzewski settled in at the podium between his two veteran guards, gesturing first toward Nolan Smith and then toward Jon Scheyer.

“I know these guys are happy to be together again,” Coach K said.

Especially when things click like this.

Smith scored a career-high 24 points in his return to the lineup, Scheyer added 20 and the ninth-ranked Blue Devils routed Charlotte 101-59 on Tuesday night in the second round of the NIT Season Tip-Off.

Kyle Singler finished with 17 points for the Blue Devils (3-0)—who never trailed, hit 12 3-pointers and shot 52.9 percent in advancing to next week’s semifinal matchup at Madison Square Garden against the TCU-Arizona State winner.

Duke went up by double figures to stay before Charlotte hit its first field goal, and its top three scorers combined for 61 points—two more than the entire 49ers’ roster.

“Those three guys on the perimeter don’t need a bucket to get them going— they are ready to go, and they’re really good basketball players,” Krzyzewski said. “The three of them, 61 points, that’s a pretty good night.”

Shamari Spears had 20 points to lead the overmatched 49ers (2-1). Sloppy play and 33.9 percent shooting kept them from their first 3-0 start since 1995 and denied them a second straight victory against a ranked opponent dating to last season’s win against then-No. 17 Xavier. They had 17 turnovers—12 in the first half, when this one was decided.

Charlotte was expected to provide some measure of resistance for the Blue Devils, who were short-handed during their first two games due to forward Mason Plumlee’s broken left wrist and Smith’s two-game suspension yet routed North Carolina-Greensboro and Coastal Carolina by an average of nearly 30 points.

But with Smith back in the lineup after sitting out for playing in an unsanctioned summer league, Duke had little trouble claiming its NCAA-record 71st straight nonconference victory at Cameron Indoor Stadium and 31st consecutive home win against an unranked opponent. The Blue Devils, three-time champions of the preseason NIT, improved to 20-2 in the event.

“(Smith) changes the dynamic of their team,” Charlotte coach Bobby Lutz said. “They weren’t pushing the ball nearly as much (without him). We knew they would, and had we had days of preparation, we probably would have slowed the game down, but we’re not built that way. … We wanted to pick our spots, but they almost wouldn’t allow that to happen.”

If Smith wasn’t determined to make up for lost time, it sure seemed that way. He reeled off eight quick points in just more than 3 minutes, surpassed his previous best—a 21-point outing at Wake Forest two seasons ago as a freshman— roughly 8 minutes into the second half and finished 9 for 15.

“When I’m in the game, the coaches want us to look to push tempo and be aggressive, getting into the paint and making plays for myself and for others,” Smith said. “That’s what I went out there and did.”

Meanwhile, Charlotte’s offense at times resembled a one-man show. Spears, a transfer from Boston College who was no stranger to the Cameron Crazies, had his second straight 20-point performance as a 49er. But none of his teammates had more than six points—a big reason why Charlotte was denied its first victory against a top 10 team since 2004.

Miles Plumlee added 15 points and 11 rebounds and Brian Zoubek added 13 boards for the Blue Devils, who made the first half look like one 20-minute-long burst of dominance.

They went up 14-2 before the 49ers’ first basket—Rashad Coleman hit a layup roughly 3 1/2 minutes in—as part of the 20-6 burst they used to begin the game. By the midpoint of the half, they were up by 20 on Scheyer’s 3-pointer in transition, and pushed the lead to 30 on Singler’s finger-roll with 3 1/2 minutes before the break.

The only negative in the first half for Duke would wind up being wiped out by a scoring change: Scheyer originally was charged with his only turnover of the season in 103 minutes. After a postgame review, that giveaway instead went to Smith.

“They really imposed their will on us tonight from the start,” Lutz said.

Dookie I did get the mailing. And right now it looks like I will be able to make both of the games. Will be great to meet you after all this time. Are you going to bring your wife and subject her to that many Tarheels and Devils in the same room? Take care you pompous, privileged, rich preppy jerk.

Amen tarheel4ever. Amen. I was actually going to give this Dookie some credit for knowing his stuff. I love the comment about the floppers. It's all they are. You know what's a real shame? I won't hear any TEABAG PAULUS chants this year when the Dookies are on the road, but Vitale(who loves to blow Duke) will be sure to bring up Paulus's lackluster career at the 'Cuse.

Barks, of COURSE we're civil...in fact, often -gasp- friends! Especially with the campus separation of about 8 miles. I've got a few Carolina fans in my neighborhood and probably six or so where I work - and that's NOT in North Carolina. By the time most drop the letters "t-e-e-n" from their age, or most certainly after they graduate, most "get it". The existence of the universe is not dependent on who did what in some game, whether you are ranked #5 or #8, or how many rounds you went in the NCAA tournament three years ago. No matter what happens in any particular game, you wake up the next day in your home, kiss the wife and kiddies, go to work (maybe talk a little trash while you are there), come home (maybe do a little more trash talking over the back fence). Every few days you get together and "become young" again for a few hours enjoying absolutely tremendous basketball. Then do it all over again, and again, and again. The rivalry is unmatched! I see an 60 year old tarheel throwing trash to a 30 year old Dookie quite regularly. Unfortunately, he's been able to throw a lot more trash at ME lately than I've been able to return. It's great!

Kind of hard to just "hate" 100,000 or so people just because they weren't lucky enough to go to THE University in North Carolina.

The old fart is the one getting upset about the Duke bashing. I'm just the young gun Duke hater stirring up an argument. I see I was successful. I'll make a deal. If Duke is actually successful this year in the NCAA Tournament, you can rip me all you want. If their not however, then maybe you can see why a great deal of people hate Duke. Sorry but for a caliber team like Duke, making the Sweet 16 every now and then isn't enough. They haven't seen the elite 8 since 2004, so if they reach that, then go right ahead and say I know nothing about the Dookies. Coach K built his program to that level, which even a Duke hater like me has to respect. It's time to see a long run in the tourney by Duke.

Tarheel4ever...you're right. It's just that one of those younguns called us "Puke"!! Nobody has EVER called us that before. It hurt my feelings snnniiifffffff.

Hey, I think I remember from last year that you are up in the NoVa area right? Did you get the mailing about the Duke/Carolina BBall group? Going to meet Dec 1 for the Carolina/MSU game then on Wed for the Duke/Wisconsin game. If you are (still) are in NoVa area, I'm sure you know Karen. Just contact her and she has all the info. Running about 60/40 Duke right now so we are really looking for some more tarheels to even things up. Sorry, obviously can't get more specific in a public forum.

Come on Dookie, ease up on the young guys....they will probably present a bigger challenge later in the year. You remember when we knew it all...right?
I agree with your #12 post. When our babies grow up, I think we will be exceptionally good. Hope some of that growing happens soon because like you said, we do have a tad difficult preconference schedule (somebody in the AD must have been on Percoset when they set that schedule up). Yes it should be a great year all around. Looking forward to some serious trashing at we get closer to "THE" games. My gut tells me Carolina wins at Cameron and Duke wins at the Dean Dome. Though I hope I'm wrong (about the latter of course). Good luck this year and DUKE SUCKS and whiner ratface gets all the calls! See, I can remember how to do it.

Oh the SHAME I'm feeling right now. I guess I can blame in on old fart brain freeze. I just can't believe that after three games, two without Williams and all three against clearly mediocre teams, that I just didn't realize Duke was running a different style of offense this year. Absolutely inexcuseable. You would think that after 36 years of this I would certainly have been more observant. Thank you Mr. Cole, truely. You have shown that you CAN teach an old dog. I look forward to learning a lot more from you as the season goes on. Right now though, I have to find a way to work through my shame.

First of all, the motion offense their running this year is DIFFERENT than the offense they've been running for a long time. Coach K had to change it because this is the biggest team he's ever had size wise. I applaud him for that. And yes, I do know my basketball, because whenever they play someone with great guards in recent years they get beat, and beat badly most of time. They had no answer for Scottie Reynolds of Nova in the tourney last year. Maybe with the progression of Smith, Duke finally has that guard that can keep up with another team's fast guard. Duke hasn't had that since Duhon or Williams. And in regards to fairness, I'm going to say you just didn't realize yet that Duke is running a different kind of offense this year, seeing that you're a Dookie since 1973. Props to the previous comment below me. Well said. I wish I can see it that way, but I can't because of my hatred for things like the "Puke" chants from the Crazies.

Don't fret Mr. Cole, you didn't hurt my feelings. The last person to do that was my commercial law professor 36 years ago. But I really was getting concerned about the lack of haters. Forget the polls, the TRUE ranking of a team is inversely proportional to the number of haters. Really. Go look at the current MSU and Kansas articles. Lots of haters so they must be good. Think about it, when was the last time anyone hated on Georgia?? Only the great teams get haters. I was starting to think Duke wasn't going to be very good this year.
BTW, I wasn't DEFENDING Coach K. While you are sitting in commercial law, he not only has black hair but gets a few hundred thousand dollars to have it. Damn, I wish I needed someone to defend me.

You have to go with the word of Jay Bilas and Hubert Davis. Each year they realistically evaluate Duke. Even though it's not always what I like to hear, normally I have to agree with what they say. And this year they have it right again: With Nolan Smith in the lineup, Duke is hands-down the best team in the ACC. Granted this is a down-year for the conference because of all the youth. But let's not forget: Duke's most athletic big, Mason Plumlee, hasn't seen the court yet. Once he gets healthy, they have 4 bigs over 6'10", along with Lance Thomas at 6'8". Kyle Singler is a stud at the 3 being 6'8", and Scheyer, Smith, and Dawkins will rotate between the two guard positions. If Singler can consistently stay out of foul trouble, and the core remains healthy, you have to consider Duke the favorites against whoever they may be playing. As for UNC, they have great size as well, but they lack the experience a team inevitably needs. When you have to say that Deon Thompson is your best player (UNC's very soft big), then there's a problem. Put all this together, and Duke will win the the ACC regular season and conference tourney. What they still have left in the tank will determine how far they advance through March and April.

One last note- If Gerald Henderson would've returned this year, Duke would be the best team in the nation, hands-down.

Mr. Cole, fortunately for Duke there obviously aren't very many teams out there with great speed on the perimeter. Most assuredly such a team would stop the Duke motion offense cold! Weird thing, they've been running that motion offense for 29 or so years now and have averaged over 25 wins a season - and that's even with clowns like Wojo, Collins and Paulus running the show. Thank goodness there aren't many teams with perimeter speed out there.Well, either that or you don't have a clue what you're talking about. In the interest of fairness, I go with the "few with perimeter speed" reasoning because I'm SURE you actually do know your BBall.

I guess I hurt Dooksince1973's feelings. I'm sorry. You must be a real Dookie. You've posted four comments on this article already, you must be concerned about the haters. I like how you didn't argue any of the points I made about your players, you just defended Coach K. And no, I'm not posting this on my iphone, but rather my laptop in Commercial Law class, so you were somewhat close. Leave it to a Dookie to sit on an article and wait for the haters to come knocking so he can try and defend the floppers. I am in no way a UNC fan but, are you guys going to try to reclaim Cameron Indoor this year? For the past four years it was nothing but, HANSBROUGH LAND.

What a relief Jcole24 showed up. I was getting worried over the lack of haters. Thinking they didn't care this year. Congratulations JCole24 you're the WINNER! The first oh so witty and original use of the term "ratface" of the year!
Where do you go to school??? Where my kids went they didn't allow them to use their iPhones during Social Studies class. But admittedly that was a few years ago.
Oh yea, you might want to ease up on the "black hair" thing. Coach K DOES dye his hair! He uses Grecian Formula -- even does commercials for them.

You idiots have got to be kidding me. Duke over Kansas or Michigan State? They played CHARLOTTE. They could of suited up WOJO and Collins and even those two clowns could of scored 20 points each in that motion offense. That offense won't be successful once they play a team with great speed on the perimeter. The only player I'll credit is Smith. He can be dangerous against anyone, but as far as Scheyer and Singler go? Come on. Scheyer is nothing but another WOJO, Collins, and Paulus. In a big game he'll be useless, unless he flops all over the floor and kicks his right leg out when he shoots three's, therefore falling down making it look like he was fouled. I hope they get UConn in the NIT final next week and Dyson and Walker just blast by Duke's slow defenders. And Mike, stop dying your hair. We all know you're 62. Just face facts and let the grey hair grow in and look more like the rat you already are.

Scott, I KNOW it hurts to say stuff like that. Should be a GREAT year. If the baby heels progress like they should, by the time THE games roll around it should be amazing. Pre-conference will be a bit hard to judge (admittedly UNC has a "tad" bit more difficult schedule) but looks like the conference will be taken by whichever of us can avoid TWO stupid losses (you know we are each guaranteed to get one). Gonna be a great year.

As bad as I HATE to admit it, DUKE looked great last night. Granted against a lesser team but GREAT non the less. As for the UK fans claim of being able to beat Duke... I DONT THINK SOOOO!!!!!!!! As a HEELS fan Finaly I'm a bit nervious about playing Duke. There tall with guards and thats TROUBLE for anybody they play.

Cut Andrew W. #6 some slack. Remember, UK fans haven't been able to participate (sans bag on their head) in these banters for a while. They are trolling all the stories dropping pretty much the same message. So cut them some slack and let them have a little fun while they can.

Wow, couldn't tell if Duke was that good or Charlotte was that bad. I know the NCAA was setting up the top four seeds to get a good Madison Square Garden lineup, but one would think they would have picked at least semi-legitimate whipping boys for the early games - especially a mid-level making through the first round. They got a week before they have Arizona St. then possibly UConn. Until then (assuming Radford goes as planned) not sure we will really know what the Devils truly have. But it is nice not to have to join the Top 10 chorus that is forming and having to sing "We'll get better and be a top team come March" that's been forming after really close games (and even a loss or two). Well, at least for another week.

Duke played good and showed why u cant let them get a favorable lead! They will bury u deep in scoring with play set up, defense, substitutions, treys, second chance points ect. This Duke team isnt deep on the bench but got highly skilled players that have played together for some years now. They may not be the all out favorite but look out they always find a way to win big games!!!
