Wall leads No. 4 Kentucky past Miami, Ohio 72-70

LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP)—Kentucky coach John Calipari looked up at the clock after Miami of Ohio tied the fourth-ranked Wildcats with six seconds left and wondered if he should call timeout.

John Wall didn’t give him a chance.

The heralded Kentucky freshman quickly grabbed the inbounds pass, raced by his coach in a blur and pulled up from 15 feet.

Before Calipari could collect his thoughts, Wall’s jumper was through the net to give the Wildcats a 72-70 win Monday night and Kentucky’s newest superstar was running down the floor pounding his chest in joy.

“John Wall catching it and going, I loved it,” Calipari said.

How could he not?

Wall finished with 19 points and five rebounds in his highly anticipated debut as the Wildcats (2-0) escaped the RedHawks (0-2).

Considered the top high school player in the country when he signed with the Wildcats last spring, Wall was forced to sit out Kentucky’s season-opening win over Morehead State last week as part of an NCAA suspension for accepting improper benefits from his AAU coach.

He proved to be worth the wait. Wall’s heroics prevented Miami from joining Gardner-Webb and Virginia Military Institute as November giant killers at Rupp Arena.

Urged by Calipari to “go make a play,” Wall responded with the kind of heroics expected when he signed with the Wildcats last spring.

“I was kind of nervous,” Wall admitted.

He didn’t look it. Wall zoomed down the left side of the floor and—seeing four RedHawks packing the lane—opted for the jumper he’d been working on with assistant coach Rod Strickland.

“When it hit the bottom of the net, it was a relief, a great feeling,” Wall said.

One that replaced the anxiety that permeated the arena after the RedHawks took an 18-point lead in the first half. The only person who didn’t seem to panic was Calipari, who said he wanted his talented but inexperienced team to be tested early in the year.

“I wanted to see what we were made of,” Calipari said. “In the huddle, they were saying ‘We are not going to lose this.’ Hey, this was kind of fun.”

It didn’t exactly seem like it after Miami’s Kenny Hayes hit a 3-pointer to tie the game at 70. Yet Wall’s heroics spoiled Miami’s bid for an upset, not that it seemed to bother coach Charlie Coles.

“All I’m hearing is they’ve got four (NBA) draft choices and you’re asking me how it got away from you?” Coles said. “We came up with a brilliant effort.”

One that wasn’t quite enough to pull off another early season stunner at Rupp.

Wall got plenty off help in the second half as Kentucky used its size to overcome shoddy ballhandling and questionable shot selection.

Patrick Patterson had 17 points and 10 rebounds and DeMarcus Cousins had 10 points and 10 boards for Kentucky, which outrebounded Miami 37-25 and outscored the RedHawks 32-12 in the paint.

Kentucky needed every last one of them.

Nick Winbush led Miami with 26 points and the RedHawks nearly pulled off the upset thanks to making 15 of 26 3-pointers.

“I’ve told people, these guys know how to shoot,” Coles said. “This would have been by best win.”

Wall wasn’t perfect—he turned it over five times—but he looked at ease with the ball in his hands and hardly bothered with the hype surrounding his arrival.

He didn’t waste any time getting comfortable, he drilled his first shot, a 3-pointer from the top of the key, to give Kentucky an early 8-5 lead.

The RedHawks, however, were hardly in awe.

Miami packed in its zone to cut off Wall and backcourt mate Eric Bledsoe from getting to the lane and didn’t hesitate to lay a body on Wall’s slender 6-foot-4 frame. He was bumped nearly every time he got into traffic and received a rude welcome to college basketball while running on the fast break midway through the first half.

Wall running down the wing when Bledsoe attempted to hit him with an alley-oop. Hayes, however, jumped up to contest it, deflecting the pass away and sending Wall tumbling to the floor along the baseline in the process.

Wall laid on the floor for several moments before gingerly walking off the court. He returned after getting a once-over from the training staff and a little talking-to from Calipari.

“Coach sat me down and told me ‘You can’t do it all yourself,”’ Wall said. “When I went back in, I settled down and just tried to make plays.”

Not a good coach? Wow, lets see demarcus cousins had nothing in the first half of the miami ohio game and he gave cousins a little speach, what did cousins do, drop a double double in 15mins, and what did he have at mass. when he coached their he didnt have superstars thats for sure. People need to think before they speak. Once everyone at UK learns to play with each other will kill'em. Dodson and harrellson can drill 3's, we got 3 great big men down low, and John wall, thats a hell of a combination.

The headlines would have read differently if it wasn't Wall who hit the shot. The media is so in love with Cal and Wall that they could come that close to a division 2 school and the media would still love them. It was a poorly played game by UK. Media needs to get out of Cal and Walls butt so they can see the light. I am from Kentucky and went to UK. They should be good, but still have some time.

well if its banners that make a team 33 is enough? right! remembering the pre NCAA years UK has 26 NIT and 7 NCAA Championships. Everyone in these posts hates to see another team win. Or see a good player go to another school. How do you think Duke and UNC fans think of Wall going to UK since he lived close to both schools? What about Kansas bout getting the boot from memphis. Was Kansas overrated? Everyone just needs to root for your team and be happy when they win, and yes being a UK fan i feel they are overrated as of now. but what a few more games and coming months will do.Remember everyone hates the team that beats yours but everyone hates KENTUCKY,why is this cause they just do and always will.

Cal has always been a great recruiter...until this year.....but he has NEVER been a great coach. Bottom line is this, Cal gets recruits by telling them they will be NBA players within a year....leaving a team of one-and done players. Kentucky fans need to get used to learning new players names every year. And a team of one and doners will almost always lose to a team of veterans, just ask Memphis last year. Thank god that memphis has moved on to a coach who can actually COACH. Oh, and it looks like he's a pretty good recruiter too! #1 class in the nation

His team this year has beat who? Lets hold off anoiting him a BB god for now and take him for what he is a used care salesman of a coach. Freakin Hipocrite

You are right it is about banners and UK has more hanging than anybody else. The N.I.T. used to determine the National Champion up until the Modern March Madness. So check your records I believe UK has 33 banners hanging to your mere 11. The program is the best of all-time by far. Now, this team is way overrated right now but they are going to be there in march and then we will all see how far overrated they actually were. They have a good inside game and their perimeter game will only improve not to mention a very deep bench. It should be a very up and down year for Cat fans but the talent is undeniably there.

UK fans didn't rank Kentucky #4 and as a UK fan I don't think, right now ,they are a 4th ranked team. They will get better. So, all the UK haters and bashers, get ready, because Kentucky is getting ready. GO BIG BLUE.

Well this goes to show that UK like always and will be OVERRATED!!! This from a fan base that thinks they have to win the national championship every year! I don't understand how these people put themselves behind a coach before he coaches a single game. They couldn't blow Morehead State out by their own standards and a MAC school held them to the wire the entire game. So how do they think they will beat anybody good this year. He will have them in trouble with the NCAA anyway by the time he's through in Lexington. So all you BIG BLUE FANS need to worry about not in-breeding and making METH to get by this basketball season.

Kentucky is good but not great. Wall is impressive but will have too many turnovers and leave in one year so everyone at Kentucky who thinks he is the Messiah will need to tame your expectations. Don't worry I am a Wildcat fan too. Go NOVA

well, i guess UNC will hand them their first loss if they don't choke before then. Wall may have hit the game winning shot, but he's overrated, and turn over after turn over waiting to happen. patterson had what is probably the most uninspiring performance i've seen. the only bright spot was cousins. he's big, mean, and physically dominant. he's the only reason they won. callipari failed to make adjustments at the half to stop miami of ohio's perimeter game. this team and this program have got a long painful season ahead of them.

I attended the UK game last night. This is an average team, the UK players believe playing defense is getting into a stance only. The outside shooting by the starting line up is below average. Miami University has no competing inside game, the UK game plan played like Miami had a strong inside game and no outside game. Miami hit 15 of 26 from the 3-pt line. The Wildcats must improve big time or no games in March.

Stu- I doubt UK fans have to worry about Calipari leaving UK for another job. Coaches don't leave programs in the likes of IU, Duke, UNC and UK for other MEDIOCRE college jobs. A coach doesnt leave UK to go to Memphis, they leave Memphis to go to UK. They don't leave IU for Marquette, they leave Marquette for IU.......Williams leaving KU was a win win for him. Stay @ Kansas and win, or go to Carolina and win. Same with Howland at UCLA. Think he would leave UCLA for Pitt? I don' t think so.

Poster 131- Greatest team or greatest program? This UK team is not and will n ot be the greatest team ever, in any era. again, it's post like that (yours) that makes my blood curl and despise UK. I root for the Cats, I do(Indiana fan). But to proclaim UK the greatest program ever is quite a strong statement. I agree there are a lot of facts(wins, winning %, NCAA wins) to back that claim, but there is still that program out West that has 11 banners hanging. Isn't that the pinnacle of any program? Banners?

Stu-First of all, what makes you think Im a UK fan? Have you not read any of my postings? If not, I will clue you in......I am an Indiana fan. Ok, now that we are through that part, can you answer my question? Did you fans @ Memphis University feel that way about Calipari when, one you hired him and two, he took you guys to a Final Four and two elite 8's? WasTiger nation nation cheering him on but under their breath speaking in tongues about him? I have yet to see any Memphis fan post that they couldn't stand Calipari during his tenure @ Memphis. Only after he left for a better job, with better opportunities and a better program did the Memphis fans label him scum and a cheat. Another question? Have you done any research on Calipari and the problems occured during his tenure @ Umass or Memphis? Im gonna go out on a limb and say probably not. The issues in question involved ONE player from Umass and ONE player from Memphis. That is TWO players out of hundreds he has coached who's eligibility has been questioned.....WOW!What a nasty track record! what a scum. Who would ever leave one job for another job to better themselves? You still work @ the same place you did while in HS? College? If not.....why not? B/C you decided to better yourself....nothing wrong with that.

The fact that all of the haters come out of the woodworks to blast UK shows their feelings of inferiority to the greatest team in NCAA History. You aren't posting your comments for any other team in the country. Even the haters want to get in on the action with the Cats. 2 Games, 2 wins, GO CATS!!!

#124/Krice: Burn me once (UMass), shame on you. Burn me twice, shame on me (Memphis). Shame on Memphis, AND Kentucky, if that makes you feel any better. I didn't claim Memphis to have a halo. If admin knew, then Memphis got what it got. I was only saying what I said, which was, Calipari is trash. He will eff your school, and leave you burning in your own bed. Good luck with that. I'm just sorry KY doesn't come to Memphis. Calipari would literally need bodyguards. And it's not the school's rep I care about. It's the average person on the street who lives for this team, and he goes and does that. It's disgraceful, and I seriously hope he doesn't do it to you guys. Karma's a boomerang. Belie'dat.

To whom this may concern(95% of you)- For those of you bashing the preseason rankings b/c a top tier team struggles....ask yourself this: If(the pollsters) were wrong about a Kentucky, Duke, UNC, etc..in their ranking, couldn't they have been wrong about how good Rider(clubbed Miss St), Miami( you know) or any of these other "smaller: schools? Is it possible? Has to be. It is a two way street my friends.
