No. 6 Tar Heels roll past NC Central 89-42

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP)—Marcus Ginyard went from being the do-everything leader on a Final Four team at North Carolina to sitting out with an injury the following season while his teammates won a national championship without him.

He’s off to a fast start in proving he’s all the way back.

The fifth-year senior matched his career high with 17 points to help the sixth-ranked Tar Heels beat North Carolina Central 89-42 on Wednesday night in the 2K Sports Classic, his second double-figure scoring output in as many games to open the season.

Deon Thompson scored 13 for the Tar Heels (2-0), who broke it open with 21 straight first-half points. North Carolina shot 69 percent in the opening half and 59 percent for the game, dominating the transitional Division I Eagles from nearby Durham in the first meeting between the schools.

North Carolina, which beat Florida International in Isiah Thomas’ college coaching debut Monday night, will step out of the Classic to benefit Coaches vs. Cancer with a weekend home game against Valparaiso on Sunday, then travel to New York to face Ohio State in the event next week.

And while both victories have come against overmatched teams, they offered at least one benefit for coach Roy Williams: some on-court proof that Ginyard has recovered from the stress fracture in his left foot, which required surgery and limited him to three games last year.

Not to mention the fact that Ginyard’s offseason work on his jump shot has paid off.

“When he shoots it now, I think it’s going in. I really do,” Williams said. “I like that it’s got great spin. He gets it up in the air. It’s not flat and it’s going to land softly, so I do expect that he’ll be more of a scorer. But I want him to be Marcus Ginyard, and then whatever he scores will be fine.”

Ginyard finished 7 for 10 from the field to go with two rebounds, three assists and three steals in 23 minutes. He had 12 points in the opener, one of only a handful of times he’s had consecutive double-figure scoring games in his career. Then again, he never had to before with guys like Tyler Hansbrough, Wayne Ellington and Ty Lawson around to take all the shots.

Instead, the 6-foot-5 Ginyard was the guy content to do all the little things. He started all 39 games during the Tar Heels’ Final Four season in 2008, versatile enough to play four positions due to injuries and foul trouble, and tough enough to be the team’s top perimeter defender and its unquestioned leader.

Now, with Hansbrough and his high-scoring teammates gone, Ginyard is being more aggressive on offense.

“I’m just really trying to get outside of being labeled,” he said. “Everybody I guess wants to label you as one thing and I just want to be a player—do anything I can and everything I can.”

Ginyard had one notably impressive stretch during the 21-0 run, first knocking down a jumper off a kickout pass from Ed Davis, then stealing the ball for a transition dunk. He followed that with another dunk off a turnover, then assisted on Leslie McDonald’s transition layup before scoring on his own layup to end the run and make it 40-17 with 4:25 left before halftime.

The game marked the coaching debut for LeVelle Moton at Central, where he ranked third on the school’s career scoring list. C.J. Wilkerson led the Eagles (0-1) with 16 points, though they shot just 26 percent.

Overall, the Tar Heels did the expected to the Eagles, dominating the boards (46-24) with their bigger front line and showing more signs of the defensive improvement Williams has said this group has the potential to make. In fact, after the Eagles started 7 for 10 from the field to trail just 19-17 with 12 1/2 minutes left until halftime, North Carolina stepped up its pressure and held them without a point for more than 8 minutes.

N.C. Central managed just one field goal the rest of the half and trailed 51-20 at the break.

“I think once they went out on the floor and got a couple of runs, we got out of whack and we stopped moving as hard and stopped setting the proper screens,” Moton said. “And from that point on, it was turmoil.”

have to be honest...sometimes I tend to say or type remarks with the intent of seeing what type of reaction I will get when I make some of the eyebrow-raising remarks that I do. in all honesty, it very obvious that in the 2008-2009 college basketball season, carolina, had the most athleticism of any program. although I am a die-hard dookie..dukie, and though I am pleased with the quality big-men playing underneath for us this year, we still lack the athleticism that we had when jay williams, battier, boozer, and duhon played during the championship years. that was painfully obvious in not only the carolina games, but also the clemson game last year, and even worse, villanova during march madness. nevertheless, I am a lifelong duke fan and in all sincerity, I have no doubt that Duke-Carolina nations will be more than entertaining. thanks for letting me share!!

My Heels are young this year but they got talent. I don't expect a national title, but they do have some potential. They will be contenders for the ACC along with Duke. These guys will be fun to watch over the next few years. Especially with the three guys they just signed today. Williams has got one good recruiting machine. I'd have to give Duke the edge this year (experience counts), but they better be prepared 'cause these Heels can play too. Saw them in person the other night. The big weakness is ball handling by the reserves. They have got to clean that up.

UNC- Duke rivalry is the best in sports. Two great programs, with awesome coaches that do things the right way. And multiple championships to prove it can be done that way.

all you unc and duke fans quit hating on each other theyre both great programs no use to insult someone cause they pull for the other team i personally think dukes a better team this year and alyhough the games will be close i think duke will beat my heels cause although talented theyre young but who knows the reason duke didnt go farther in the tournament last year was because they were tired they spent to much energy on winning the acc tournament then just didnt have the legs for the ncaas my opinion

I'm a hard core Dookie and I've NEVER said (or felt) that Carolina fans are arrogant. Actually, in all my years, I've never even heard OTHER Duke fans say that. Carolina fans are GREAT! Both schools having great programs certainly helps, but really it is the fans, year after year after year (repeat until you reach 36 for me) that make this rivalry what it is....THE BEST! True ADULT fans, on both sides, respect the other side completely. OF COURSE I'm gonna trash talk with the best (see recent post on working the cash registers), or I should say "equals" because those are Carolina fans. It does take the younger ones to really figure out how to do all this....heck, I remember back in 1973 when just starting, I was pretty rude, rediculous and obnoxious. Had a lot to learn. Now I'm just rediculous and obnoxious. Hope you guys kick some MSU butt. See you carolina grads at the checkout counter next time I go to Wendy's (just had to throw that in - it's a habit).

Maybe some one can enlighten me. " Carolina fans are arrogant? No repect for opponants?" How is it arrogant to be proud of what your program has accomplished and as for the lact of respect for others? Who are you as a DUKE Fan talking too? Every school can get a bad apple or two but like I've pointed out before. We've never had players like Latner or Henderson whom took an oppertunity to audition for the WWE during a game. But some how I'm sure as a Duke fan most of you are proud of that too. As for use HEELS fans, the true ones, we simply support our school the same as Duke fans by trash talking and adding to the hype of the game between two great programs. As for paying our dues: ( I'm still confused about that ) We cant help it that you paid more for school !! Thats YOUR fault ! ! !

Darn, they took this off the front page. Too bad because that will probably make it too difficult for the carolina fans to find (have to click on TWO links and read). Maybe they will show up to post about the Duke game tonight. One can only hope.

#42 you're absolutely right. It's almost criminal. I can't tell you how many places I've been in NC where a Tarheel grad from their first day on the job gets the cushy register assignment. Not a one has to follow the normal progression of burger assembler to fry station then to register.

But on the positive side, with the carolina grads working the registers, you do get the correct change most of the time.

Dimebag, do you really think you hurt a 54 year old Dookie's feelings?? How do you spell "Delusions of Grandure"?

Scott, thank you for your concern. I too home my son get's better soon...or more accurately my pocketbook hopes he get's better soon.

no, not referring to NBA salaries, i'm referring to the fact that all of you carolina fans are extremely arrogant and condescending and show no sportsmanship or respect for any of your opponents. and to art, it's not like all carolina fans are bastiens for high morals and the fact that all you carolina alums always land in the easy chair without a hint of paying your dues. at least Duke supporters and all the other schools don't look down their noses at others like Carolina fans do, even when you were 8-20

Im a Tarheel fan to the bone.Always have been, always will.Gotta respect Dook basketball a lot because when they play, the whole country is watching .Heck, the second best coach out there is coach k,behind Roy of course. No matter what happens, dont let Kentucky win it.I literally despise that team. They dont win the right way, never did.Ever seen the movie BLUE CHIPS.Thats whats going on in KY. this year.Last year was the last straw for their alumni and boosters. The truth will be known eventually.

you know, it must be really nice being a part of tarheel nation. it must be really super great rooting for a team who has never once paid its dues or has never, even remotely endured any hint of difficulty. it must be grand that carolina alumni can graduate with 2.0 gpa's and obtain the most prestigious and highest paying jobs where the rest of the world has to struggle. oh well, by all means, wallow in your arrogance. at least the remainder of institutions appreciate all their blessings...

Scott, actually I DID go to Duke ('73-'78). And NO I didn't marry a girl from UNC. I married a beautiful woman from U of Penn. And there aren't two brain surgeons in the house, there's only one - my wife who is a neurologist! I'm just a lowly injunear. (Thanks for setting that up so well for me!) And I am having fun! Only difficult thing is that my son goes to Clemson...WAAAAYYYYY too orange down there for my tastes. But at least I have something to watch during football season.

Yea we'"ll know more after we play the next 5 games. I steel think the turnovers are going to be a problem if they dont stop trying to be fancy when they get ahead. If that was a real good team last night we would have got into trouble.

Now that all you star crossed lovers have kissed and made up, does anybody want to comment on the game? Is it just me or did the boys look like they where geling better last night? Anybody wana bet on Strickland becoming the starting point later in the year? What do ya'll think about Henson and that missed highlight dunk? Would have been a show stopper had he made it but other than that I've seen nothing from him yet! What about Ginyard and Graves? If they step up to there potential what do you think the odds are of a repeat? We got alot to work out but but atleast seeing them play together so much better last night gives me more hope for GREAT THINGS this year. As for all this talk about ACC championship ( Regular season/ Tournament ), I'm sure we all would trade them in for more National Championships ! ! !

Hey now rjamoi, don't be sexist. Saying there aren't very many attractive females at Duke is just being a pig. Don't you know that there aren't that many attractive PEOPLE at Duke (I'm living proof!). But still, carolina PEOPLE do still look to Dook for dates...because they realize looks aren't everything. Better to get a smart one who can support you in the way you would like to become accustomed. And they know they have to go off-campus for that.

Your turn! (Of course it's all jokes and in fun...in the words of my son...duhhhhhhh - or is it no duh? - I've never understood the difference) That's why the rivalry has been so great for soooooo long.
