North Carolina too much for Villanova in 83-69 win

DETROIT (AP)—Men vs. boys. Big brother vs. little brother. Future pros against a bunch of good college kids.

That summed up North Carolina’s 83-69 victory over Villanova on Saturday night. The ultra-talented Tar Heels simply never gave the Wildcats a chance to breathe, let alone whip up a fresh dose of Final Four magic.

Ty Lawson scored 22 points, Wayne Ellington had 20 more and the Tar Heels, with their four, five, maybe more NBA-caliber players, stayed on a path that has seemed almost certain since the season began in November.

Tyler Hansbrough had 18 points and 11 rebounds to make this a quite successful return to the Final Four after a remarkable dud last year in a semifinal loss to Kansas. Next up, North Carolina (33-4) goes for its second title in five years Monday against Michigan State, an 82-73 winner over Connecticut.

“It feels good to be back here to get another shot,” Carolina forward Deon Thompson said. “Now that we have an opportunity, we have to seize it.”

The Spartans, located 90 miles up the road in East Lansing, will certainly have the crowd on their side. The talent gap, though? Eek. They’ll have to be at least 35 points better than they were in December when the teams met in this same building—a 98-63 UNC romp.

“They had a couple players that were hurt and came off a long road stretch,” Lawson said. “We know they’re a better team right now.”

Meanwhile, Villanova (30-8) ends a successful season two wins short of its first title since 1985, when Rollie Massimino coaxed one of the greatest upsets in sports history out of his guys—66-64 over Patrick Ewing, John Thompson and Georgetown.

Thompson was on press row doing radio and Massimino was chomping his gum nervously behind the Villanova bench, part of the record crowd of 72,456 at Ford Field—half gone and streaming toward the exits with 5 minutes left.

But James Naismith himself probably couldn’t have helped ‘Nova out of this one.

North Carolina simply had too much talent.

“They played a great game and are playing extremely well,” Villanova coach Jay Wright said. “They’ve got all the pieces, and we have great respect for them. We’ve been getting better every game, and we did not get better tonight.”

Carolina did.

Last season, in one of the more inexplicable performances in Final Four history, the Tar Heels trailed Kansas 40-12 midway through the first half.

This time, they led 40-23.

“I’ve been there. I was there a year ago,” North Carolina coach Roy Williams said. “It feels like somebody jerks your heart out and shakes it.”

Ellington made five of his first six shots, including a 3-pointer after a perfect crosscourt pass over the top from Danny Green. Nobody had an answer for Hansbrough, who once found himself bodied up with Dante Cunningham, faked left, then spun to the baseline and saw no more resistance—a way-too-easy layup.

Lawson, he of the injured toe and the successful trip to the craps table in downtown Detroit a few nights previous—well, he stayed on a roll, going 5-for-11 with eight assists and seven rebounds. Had he shot better than 10-for-17 from the line, this game might have been more lopsided.

And so, what began as tournament with great potential for the Big East— three top seeds, two in the Final Four—will end with the conference on the sideline.

“Right now, Carolina proved that regardless of conference, they’re playing the best basketball in the country right now,” Wright said. “So did Michigan State.”

No disrespect to Villanova, which did, in fact, make this interesting for a brief time. The Wildcats cut the deficit to five early in the second half. It could have been three, but Cunningham’s jumper went halfway in before cruelly rimming out.

Green answered with a 3-pointer, then the Tar Heels got a steal and layup from Lawson to push the lead back to 10. That took all of 64 seconds.

“Big-time players make big-time shots in big-time games,” Ellington said of the Green 3.

Though the rest of the second half was a jumbled mess for both teams—which allowed Villanova to stay in shouting distance—the Wildcats never got it back under double digits.

It was a typical no-quit effort from Wright’s group of seasoned upperclassmen, who battled through the Big East and started putting it together come tournament time.

Scottie Reynolds will always have that indelible end-to-end game-winning layup against Pittsburgh last weekend that got Villanova to its Final Four since ’85. His first basket in this one, however, didn’t come until more than 9 minutes were gone and the deficit was in double digits. He finished with 17 points on 6-for-18 shooting.

Cunningham, the Wildcats’ leading scorer and rebounder this season, had 12 and 12. Reggie Redding had 15 points, and Corey Fisher scored 13 in 5-for-19 shooting.

A lot of the Villanova stats didn’t look so bad. They got five more rebounds and were even in the turnover battle. They hustled and dove on the floor all night.

But as the game was getting out of reach early, they simply couldn’t defend. North Carolina shot 67 percent while opening that 17-point lead in the first half. The Tar Heels led 49-40 at halftime.

And the Wildcats couldn’t shoot. ‘Nova shot 33 percent from the floor, not exactly the 78.6 percent from that “perfect game” back in ’85. They were even worse from 3-point range—5-for-27. And there were way too many scenes reminiscent of big brother vs. little brother: Where the Villanova player would drive the middle, make a few head fakes and the Carolina guy would just stand there, wait for the histrionics to end and block or alter the shot.

“Even when shots don’t fall, we pride ourselves on find a way to win,” senior Dwayne Anderson said. “We didn’t find a way tonight.”

What resulted was, quite simply, what it looks like when a roster of very good college players goes up against a team full of NBA-caliber talent.

Hansbrough. Freshman forward Ed Davis. Lawson. Green. Ellington. The last three in that group actually considered the NBA after last season but didn’t get the right feedback from scouts. Another year of seasoning couldn’t hurt, they figured, and that made the Tar Heels the team to beat starting in preseason, when they were the unanimous No. 1 in The Associated Press poll.

The last time the Heels were No. 1 at the beginning and the end was 1982— when a guy named Michael Jordan wore Carolina Blue.

Yes, there were hiccups along the way this season, such as when the Tar Heels lost their first two ACC games, and when Lawson missed three games with the toe—one of an assortment of injuries they endured.

But none of it was enough to derail this ride from Tobacco Road to Motown. Carolina has won every tournament game by 12 or more. Now, Williams finds himself one win away from leading his alma mater to its fifth national championship.

Chuck F - Learn, know before you speak and you won't embarrass yourself. Yeah, Lawson had an absolutely monster game with 13 points, 5 assists v. Conley 8 points with 8 assists – you forgot that Oden (injured as usual) didn’t play and loosen up the middle for Conley- how convenient for you….If you READ my post I said NBA talent and referred to Buckeyes and Gators. Oden went #1, Conley #4 plus Cook and 3 Florida players went in the First Round, Horford, etc. Tell me Chuckie, is Lawson going to go #4 – will he even go in the First Round? You UNC zealots are so blind, if I were you Chuckie, I would bet the house that Hansbrough will go in the First Round – you will be living in a cardboard box. And while we are at it, tell me how many other first round picks are on the UNC roster? Go ahead and name them?….Like I said earlier, Williams’ coached teams have choked so many times before with good talent. Therefore, the record shows he’s a crummy coach sitting in a recruiting cakewalk at a terrific shool. Even Pitino got more results out of his talent over the years.

It seems that the pundits are already handing the trophy to North Carolina. The sports media has always had a love affairs with this winning and but at times inconsistent program.

The NCCA is full of history of where the favorite did not win the tournament, Just a few years ago, The Florida Gators upset UCLA, teams such as UNLV and Indiana have went the season undefeated and loss in the tournamnet. The championshio is anybody's to win.

However, with that said Michigan State is going to have to play a nearly flawless game to win. North Carolina is more than just a talented team. They are a team that plays well with each other and feeds off each other. Michigan State is deep. If they can get North Carolina in foul trouble or tired they will win this game. Michigan State has the scorers to win this game but if they make alot of errors, this game will get away from them quick and North Carolina will win by double digits.

Yeah...all you Heel haters are exactly right...Roy is a terrible coach, Hansbrough sucks, media bias, partial refs, blah blah freakin blah...time to MAN UP and admit that this team is the best in the country. They've proven it time and time again. Why do you suppose teams like Nova and OU suddenly have bad shooting nights when they face NC? It's called DEFENSE. Something you've all been saying Carolina can't play...and yet, here they are in the title game. Back to reality, biotches.

The media has been worshiping the tarheels all year, I'm sure they'll hand them the title on a silver platter, just as they did in 05 in the most poorly officiated championship game in history, and with the worst call in tournament history against Villanova in the regional. They wouldn't dare let they're beloved hansborough go without a title....

I think that North Dukelina with their recruiting budget and with the help of ESPN which serves as lead recruiter for them should win every year. Why don't they just merge Duke with UNC since there is no real difference anyway. Heck then ESPN could send Dukey UNC V out to follow them around 365 days a year. He took a shower in under 5 minutes thats awesome with a capital A baby. Roy Williams just slipped that recruits parents plane tickets, game tickets and cash and no one can trace it, he's unbelievable.

This game is destiny for Michigan State... it's their time.
Sometimes it doesn't matter how great the other team is, it's just fate. The state is in economic turmoil, and this team is the sunlight through the clouds. MSU beat some of the top teams in the tourney, and all the mojo is going their way.... as long as they don't get the Lions locker room MSU will win on Monday.

For all who dont understand; understand this! Great teams play great teams in conference or not. That is the reason why ACC schools year after year have a high RPI and ranking all season long. The ACC play in preseason competiton (ACC/Big ten challenge, coaches vs cancer, Maui Invitational, Pre season Nit ect.) We dont pad our schedule to rack up alot of wins, knowing when we get to conf. play well lose 4-5 in 8 games like other schools. We play the best and then play in a conf that has very well 5-6 teams that can be in the top 20 let alone the top 25! Duke, UMD, Wake Forest, Clemson, Florida St. and BC!!! Yeah! all were ranked and play great out of conf. teams (preseason) this year! The ACC had three different schools that have won Nat. title in a 5 season window! Duke, UMD and UNC (2001-2005). So when we talk about the best and who is the best you dont have to go to a outdated publication to do research. Think about the past several years!!!!!

I think it is very fitting that the Spartys return 30 years later for another championship game. I was at the 79 game in Utah and I believe we were underdogs way back then too. It was the greatest sporting event I ever attended. The current team seems to be playing like a team of destiny and I just hope after Monday night the Green and White are cutting down the nets again. I just have a feeling that no matter what you throw at these guys now, they somehow find a way to win. With all due respect to Bill Self of Kansas, I think Izzo is my Coach of the Year ! GO GREEN/ GO WHITE - SPARTYS ALL THE WAY !

UNC, an NBA-type laden team? Compared to what? E.G., they don't have near the talent of OSU or Florida a couple of years ago. Lawson, he's good, he's no Mike Conley. Al Horford would have walked thru any big man in the tournament with the exception of Griffin ( Blake, not his dud brother) and Hansbrough looked really good against Griffin?, with his feet stuck in cement like they always are - he's just a good college player; Ellington finally got hot in one game, big deal. UNC has a sloppy floor game and turns the ball over. MSU, the players arms and hands are every where, they get every loose ball and they create those turnovers because every player is good AND an over-achiever because of Izzo. Even the smallest MSU player rebounds on the offensive end.
Hey, UNC, remember MSU beat a very good UCONN team fair and square; would not get to pompous about it until you win the game, if you in fact are able to. Almost forgot, Roy Williams is an OK guy, but he and his supposedly talented players have choked plenty of times before...IMHO. Look forward to an exciting college basketball game on Monday.

I am hoping that Carolina will have a bad night just like they did four times this past season.
It can happen. I have a cousin who is fanatical about the tar heels, and I just can't bear the overwhelming snotty comments if they win. I am a NC State fan, and I know that someday we will be back in our "glory days."

WOW... All these UNC hater are so gay. I am a Tarheel fan all day/nite... I'm a fan of Tom Izzo(he's a GREAT coach), but UNC is gonna win this Nat. Champ game... This cat say UNC is not deep enough(post #22)... Are u stupid or something. UNC bench is rediculous. And Tyler is the Tim Tebow of basketball. He can take the game over if need be, but like Tebow ""IT'S NOT LAST SEASON"... Tebow/Tyler teammates are playing DAMN good ball this year, so it would be selfish of them if they tried to put the game in their own hands... Did u see Ellington(OMG) he was lights out from 3pt... Ty Lawson is a monSTAR... OMG ppl please stop hating. Michigan St. is a good team w/ a great coach. I called thier Championship in 2002 b4 the tournament. Mateen Cleaves and Morris Peterson were killers on that squad w/ Granger, Charlie Bell, and Hudson... But it's 2009 and it's time for my Tarheels to get ANOTHER RING...
