Michigan St beats No. 1 seed Louisville 64-52

INDIANAPOLIS (AP)—Even before Michigan State’s first game of the season, coach Tom Izzo gathered his players and spelled out their goal.

“Ford Field,” he wrote on a dry-erase board.

That part of the Motown mission is now complete.

The Spartans gave the Final Four a hometown feel, stopping overall No. 1 seed Louisville 64-52 Sunday to win the Midwest Regional.

Goran Suton had 19 points and 10 rebounds as the second-seeded Spartans (30-6) played the pace game to perfection and reached their fifth Final Four in 11 years—the most trips of any team in the nation during that span.

Only 90 miles from their campus in East Lansing, the Spartans will play Connecticut on Saturday at Ford Field in Detroit. A crowd of 72,000, the largest ever for college basketball’s signature event, is expected for each game.

“Detroit, here we come,” said Izzo, a Michigan native. “I can’t tell you how much I’m looking forward to that.”

The Spartans made it 30 years after Magic Johnson led them to a national title over Larry Bird and Indiana State.

“Detroit needs something, Michigan needs something to feel good about,” said Johnson, who was at the game. “And right now, the whole state is feeling good about this Michigan State team.”

Along with advancing, the Spartans prevented a Big East blitz in the Final Four—coach Rick Pitino and Louisville (31-6) were trying to become the third school from the power-packed conference to make it.

“They were the better team,” Louisville’s Terrence Williams said. “They were quicker than us, their defense was more physical and we couldn’t turn them over like we wanted to.”

Next week’s short trip will be a special treat for many Spartans—eight Michigan residents are on the roster.

Durrell Summers, who delivered 10 second-half points, grew up in Detroit. Kalin Lucas, the Big Ten player of the year, was raised 10 minutes from the giant stadium.

Michigan has one of the nation’s highest unemployment rates and Detroit’s economy, which is heavily reliant on the flailing auto-making industry, has been reeling. The team is certainly aware of the state’s plight.

“I’m just hoping we’re a silver lining in what’s been kind of a cloudy year for us,” Izzo said. “I’m hoping that we’re the sunshine, I’m hoping we’re something to embrace.”

After traveling to Indianapolis, Minneapolis and back to Indianapolis the last three weekends, the Spartans showed their zeal at the end.

Exuberant players were hugging with more than a minute to go, and as the buzzer sounded, Isaiah Dahlman tossed the ball high into the air as players and coaches jumped for joy, then took part in a group hug just in front of the bench.

“One thing we told ourselves was that we was going to get back there (Detroit),” Lucas said.

The game went nothing like Louisville expected.

Its vaunted pressure defense produced no fastbreak points. After committing nine turnovers in Friday’s 39-point rout over Arizona, the Cardinals matched that total in 18 minutes Sunday. They opened the game on a scoring drought that lasted nearly four minutes.

And two days after scoring 103 points, they barely avoided setting a new a season-low point total thanks to Earl Clark’s 3-pointer with 12 seconds left. Louisville scored 51 points against Connecticut on Feb. 2.

The biggest problem was Michigan State’s aggressive man-to-man defense, which kept Louisville out of sync all day.

“I think that was our biggest problem, the fact that the last six, seven games we probably have had 90 percent zones,” Pitino said. “We got very good at going against zones, but that man-to-man gave us trouble tonight because our inside attack wasn’t there.”

The combination sent Louisville to its second straight regional final loss and marked the third straight year Pitino’s team was eliminated on the second day of a weekend.

But Pitino didn’t blame this one on fatigue.

Instead, he credited Michigan State for playing a physical, deliberate style that finally broke the Cardinals—just as Izzo choreographed it.

“The game plan was beautiful. The guys executed the game plan to perfection,” Johnson said. “The key to the game was going to be the pace of the game and our defense. We got the pace and we played great defense and that was the key.”

The Cardinals never figured it out, and never managed to produce one of those trademark scoring runs.

Clark led Louisville with 19 points, but the only other player to reach double figures was backup guard Preston Knowles, who had all 11 points in the first half. Williams finished with five points, six rebounds and four assists.

Just about everything went the Spartans’ way.

Although Louisville trailed 30-27 at the half, Williams acknowledged the sluggish start affected the Cardinals’ second-half performance.

They did manage to take a 34-32 lead with 15:33 to go, but then the Spartans took control.

With Suton on the bench, Michigan State went on a 9-2 run to rebuild a 41-36 lead. Then Summers got going. He hit a long jumper, just inside the 3-point line, followed that with a 3 and ended the 17-7 spurt with another three to give Michigan State an insurmountable 58-43 lead with 5:50 to go.

Louisville had only one more basket the rest of the way, finishing this part of Michigan State’s drive to the Final Four.

“It’s as big a win as our school has had because we’re going to Detroit, and that’s been a dream and a goal since they announced where the Final Four was in 2009,” Izzo said.

Uconn had to come from behind to beat Michigan, a mid-level Big Ten team, on their court. They won't know what to do when they go up against the best of the Big Ten in front of a hostile crowd. MSU will be looking forward to a rematch against UNC too, even though I think Villinova will beat them, but if it does happen MSU will be ready. If they go up against Villinova, like I think they will, they'll make it a three team sweep of the Big East and prove what conference was really the best this year. Mark my word. Spartans in'09.

Uconn will stomp on them like a rat. No team has a program like UCONN in which both mens AND womens can easily win in the final

So much for all the hype for the Big East, all those bloggers who didn't give Sparty a chance. UConns best player is hurt, and Sparty goes to the final against UNC. Going to take a big game from anyone to stop the tar heels. Pit gone, Louisville gone, Syracuse gone, Uconn soon to be gone.

The NCAA tournament is better than watching the Pros. I love March for this reason. Even though
my team was knocked out, I'll enjoy watching the rest of the tournament. Since I have a relative who
went to North Carolina, I'll just have to root for them. Go tarheels!

d k, You are completely correct about Dickie V & all those other fruit nuts... Two jobs where you can be wrong 90% of the time & still keep your job? - weatherman & sports analyst (that's, of course, unless you pull a Jimmy the Greek... lol..) But seriously, I didn't see anyone pick MSU for the Elite 8, much less thee final four & now they're all up on Izzo's nuts. hilarious... Just hope they keep picking Big East to win... I'd like nothing better, than to see MSU wrap up the tournament with a 3 game Big East blowout.. Seeing as how the Big Ten is 'weak' and the Big East 'so strong'.. Just wait til Walton shuts down Price & Suton drags Thabeet out to 3-point land, then it'll be "well I've been saying how Michigan St's a strong team all season & I knew they would be tough in the Tourney..." same 20-20, hindsight BS.... Go State! This is Sparta!!!

I'm a huge MSU fan- thrilled to see MSU in another Final Four, and trying to figure out why there is some moron on here talking about SEC football.... anyhow, I would like to say that Pitino is a class act and a great coach & that Louisville is a great team. It makes MSU's win even more impressive. I really think State has a chance at winning it all. Go State!

Ervin, a lot of people aren't aware of Rick Pitino's coaching experience, as you stated he coached The Knicks before going to Kentucky, he also coached the Boston Celtics and the Big East's Providence College Friars.

There's a small handfull of coaches out there that can take an average college team and turn their program into a conference contender or at least an underdog conference upsetter. Mr Pitino is definately one of these coaches.
An excellent is what Pitino did for Providence College. PC is a small school in the smallest State in the country. It is extremely rare at best to hear some high school senior super star in anywhere USA telling reporters that after graduating high school he has his eye on UCLA, UNC, Kansas and oh yah PC.
Recruiting is not a problem for the Big East a lot of players would love a chance to play for UCONN, Louisville, Pitt because they see a chance at a National Title. PC however is and always will be a cinderella team at best and therefore does not recruit the big prospects. PC will put together a respectable starting 5, but if forced to use their historically weak bench, they are done for.

Their weak bench was displayed back in the 72/73 season when their starting 5 beat the number 1 team in the country by 1 point (Michigan State) at the buzzer earlier in the season. This same starting line up found themselves in the final 4 that year and were leading Memphis by 14 points with 8 minutes to play. Their All American center Marvin Barnes twisted an ankle coming down for a rebound and with no bench to carry the lead, watched their lead slowly fade away to a heart breaking loss.
    Sorry, enough about PC.

My entire point is in praise of Rick Pitino and the few coaches in his class, who don't make headlines because they were hired to go along for the ride in coaching an automatic final 4 team, but instead leads the team to the Big Dance.

What does the Big Ten have to do to shut up Digger Phelps. He has bet against them in every game and continually trashed the conference for not scoring enough points in games (DEFENSE). 10 seeded Michigan gets win over 7 seeded Clemson, 5 seeded Purdue gets win over 4 seeded Washington (Sweet 16), 12 seeded Wisconsin win over 5 seeded FSU, and Michigan St. in Final 4.
Hey digger what was the score in the Louisville game?? Yeah We Know thats why you never won!

A TRIP HOME! Enjoy it! Teams with no class like Louisville don't deserve to play in the Final Four!

I've always hated Michigan State.....but I'm elated that they won! I hope they go all the way!

"If you would have put MIN in the Big east the would have finished in the lower tier of our conference, not to mrntion if we did not expand our conference tourney the probably would have not even made it. By the way what did they do in the tourney. "

    Mythical at best

Fact: Minnesota and MSU both beat louisville

anyone can suppose what they want, fact is the big east's best lost the only two games they played against Big Ten teams this year... I know, it's a difficult thing for false pride to deal with, but there you have it.

map128, you are STILL an idiot. For 73,75, 77,78,79.Alabama was the only SEC team worth a crap. LOOK IT UP RETARD. UGA won in 80. Auburn is listed in 83 and UF forfeited one in 85. Where do you see that the SEC won 15 in the last 40 years?? WTF are you looking at? They are listed as NC but there was a spit vote almost every time. By the same token OSU had pieces of NC's for 68,69,70,73,74,75. I didn't even look at Michigan or MSU. And don't be slick and try Arkansas either, they were in the SWC when Lou Holtz was there. IF you use them, then I'll include Penn State. You are the biggest homer ever and have no clue. You frail little NFL busts couldn't handle the cold anyway. And the last time I checked, LSU had to resort to trick plays in that game against OSU. And don't forget we supply the best coaches the SEC has. Yes a cycle idiot, and don't worry the SEC will run out just like always. Didn't hear from you people most of the late 80's and early 90's save for Alabama again in 92.

So let's see. You handily dominate the #1 seed in the tournament, the #1 team in the country, and you're playing in your home state, peaking as a team, and you're still the underdog?? According, to DICK V, Digger, Clarke, everybody. Well, fine. Bring it.
