Top-seeded UConn outlasts Missouri 82-75

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP)—Connecticut often overwhelms opponents with its size and strength.

Harried by the fighting Missouri Tigers, UConn needed something else: speed.

Enter 6-foot-1 freshman Kemba Walker, who matched a career high with 23 points as the top-seeded Huskies held off Missouri 82-75 in the West Regional final on Saturday. UConn earned a trip to Detroit and extended the Big East’s dominance of the NCAA tournament.

UConn is headed to its third Final Four, where it will meet either Big East rival Louisville or Big Ten powerhouse Michigan State. This trip may have seemed harder than the others, because the Huskies were rocked this week by a report alleging that they violated NCAA recruiting rules.

Then came a duel with Mizzou. But the Huskies kept their poise even as the Tigers erased an early 11-point lead to surge ahead in the second half.

“We took some bumps, we took some bruises, but here we are once again going to the Final Four, and I’m just elated,” UConn coach Jim Calhoun said.

Among those banged up was 7-foot-3 center Hasheem Thabeet, who bloodied a finger on his right hand scrapping for a loose ball on the floor in the second half. The Big East co-player of the year finished with 13 rebounds but only five points and no blocks, and held a bandage to his hand after the game.

“I’m getting it checked out, but I should be good,” Thabeet said.

A.J. Price added 18 points and was named most outstanding player of the West region. But the difference was Walker, who deftly handled the Tigers’ pressure defense.

“I told him he grew up,” Price said. “He played like a man among boys today.”

When it ended, Calhoun made an exaggerated fist pump and the emotional Huskies (31-4) mobbed each other at center court.

“I can’t lie to you, after the game I actually did cry,” said Walker, who went 7-of-9 from the floor and 9-of-10 from the free throw line.

UConn kept their emotions in check when it counted, though, clinching the victory by making all 10 of their free throws in the final 1:02.

The Huskies are still in the hunt for their third national title—the first two went through regionals in Phoenix in 1999 and 2004.

“We do love coming out here,” Calhoun said with a chuckle. “I’m buying a house. I’ll come out here once every five years.”

While the Huskies are headed for Detroit, the wait goes on for Missouri, which remains one of the top programs never to reach a Final Four.

Leo Lyons and Matt Lawrence each had 13 points for Missouri (31-7), which was long on heart but short on rebounds. UConn dominated the boards 47-32.

“Obviously, I hurt for our guys,” Mizzou coach Mike Anderson said. “I thought I could get them to that magical place. Maybe we just ran out of time, a couple minutes.”

Indeed, the Tigers edged within 68-65 on Justin Stafford’s tip-in with 2:42 to go.

That’s when Walker answered with the shot of the game—an improbable off-balance bank shot as the shot clock clicked toward :00.

“I was turning and turning and turning, and I just kind of threw it up,” Walker said. “It was definitely a big basket. It was a heartbreaker.”

Said Missouri’s J.T. Tiller, “It just described what kind of day it was.”

Stafford scored again, but Price hit a jumper from the lane to push the Huskies’ lead to 72-67, and the Tigers never recovered.

“It does feel like it slipped away,” Lyons said. “That game right there was a game we could have won and should have won.”

The first meeting between the schools featured a clash of styles. The Tigers, who had scored 102 points on Memphis on Thursday night, wanted a track meet. The Huskies wanted a weightlifting contest.

Early on, it was all UConn. The Huskies easily broke Missouri’s pressure defense and built a 13-2 lead before Anderson called timeout three minutes into the game.

The Tigers regrouped, and on the next possession they drew the first foul on Thabeet, who went to the bench.

It was clear the Tigers weren’t going to go away. And for a few moments it looked like they would be headed to Detroit instead of the Huskies.

Keith Ramsey’s layup off a dish from Tiller capped a 9-0 run and gave Missouri its first lead, 50-49, with 13:30 to play in the game.

Sensing the upset, the University of Phoenix Stadium crowd of 18,886 began to roar. Two nights earlier, second-seeded Memphis had wilted in the face of the Tigers’ pressure. But the Huskies are a stouter group, toughened by a winter in the rugged Big East.

“They’ve got some experienced guys that wouldn’t get rattled,” Anderson said.

The dejected Tigers walked off to an ovation from the black-and-gold-clad throng that had made the trip from the Midwest. The Huskies mounted a hastily erected stage to accept the West region trophy, but they dispensed with the traditional net-cutting ceremony.

That one will have to wait at least a week.

“We just chose not to cut down the nets,” Price said. “Hopefully, we’ll have a chance to cut them down somewhere else.”

Wow. Hats off to the Missouri fans who refuse to whine, and, instead, compliment a game well played by both teams. Coming from the middle of Yankees/Red Sox territory, I'm really not used to it! Thanks to Missouri for the good game, and HELLO Detroit!!! Go UConn!

Thabeet, by himself, committed 9 or 10 fouls, only 3 of which were actually called. This game was one of the biggest Joe Jobs I've ever had the displeasure of viewing. I'm not a Mizzou fan at all, but this was absolutely nuts.

First of all, I'm an avid Mizzou fan and alum. UCONN showed the poise that Memphis did not and they deserved to win. I would have loved to see MU in the final four, but they didn't play better than UCONN. MU fans, please don't be like many Marquette and Memphis fans that whined about the officiating. Mizzou beat both of them on the court. The officiating didn't beat Mizzou, UCONN did. When all is said and done, Mizzou displayed remarkable determination and character. Mizzou showed everyone what it was like to play basketball as a team. However, UCONN was a better team on the court yesterday and showed it down the stretch when it counted. Good luck UCONN!

I am a long time MU fan, we had a great year and I am proud of the teams accomplishments...But the bottom line is UCONN capitalized on the boards and executed their game plan by hitting the boards and drawing fouls. Were there bad calls or missed calls? Absolutely, but I think it went both ways. If the Tigers would have capitalized better on their game of creating turnovers it may have been a different outcome, but who knows. But when all is said and done, there will be only 1 champion and we all get to look forward to midnight madness and another great year of NCAA hoops...Congrats on the win UCONN and good luck next saturday against MSU, hope you guys win...

Mizzou had a much harder schedule and won the Big 12. They deserved to have the game called evenly at least.

I am a long time Uconn fan and Mizzou is an awesome team. To the guy that said that the Big East was a "patsy" conference, it never was a never has been. Georgetown and Syracuse used to dominate back in the day, It is a bruising conference. Now it is Uconn, Pitt and a few other teams that come up now and again. Now that we have included Louisville and Marquette and others we are a much stronger conference.

Mizzou was not the better team or else they would have won. We were missing one of our best players and highest scorers (Jerome Dyson) and still won.

There was a reason Mizzou was playing in that game last night...they're a great team and had a great season, but again, somebody has to lose. The refs have been inconsistant all year. One game they let the teams tackle each other and the next game they're calling hand checks 25 feet from the basket. Coaches and players have to see how a game is called and adjust. It's that simple. Look at the stats, Uconn was just a better overall team, THAT'S why they won.

I find it curious that many UCONN fans are critical of Mizzou's record. The fact is that even though Jim Calhoun is a good coach, he has a LONG way to go to get close to Norm Stewart's record ( almost 100 more victories) at the same school. As far as wins go, for many of the years Calhoun has been at UCONN the Big East was a "patsy" conference. Those are facts
That said congrats UCONN, you won the game, well done. We are still proud of coach Anderson and our Tigers, who by the way won 41 games in Div 1 Football and Basketball !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't understand why the Mizzou fans are crying. Your team played a great game. In fact I thought the game itself was great. As a UCONN fan I would not have been surprised if Mizzou would have won the game. They're an excellent team and I believed the game was going to be a nail biter. Any of you Mizzou fans old enough to remember Vince Lombardi? We didn't lose we just ran out of time!

Hey Tony M and the other smack talkers.......In the end its still just a game! You guys are idiots. You too Margaret. As an MU fan, im not a crybaby (read my blog). I give credit where credit is due. Great game and excitement even though my team didnt win. No crying in my beer. Good luck to Uconn. Margaret, I can GUARANTEE you there are bad fans for ANY team so dont pick on MU fans. It wouldnt surprise me if you were a KU fan:):) And by the way, I was cheering on KU in their game:). Some of you people take this crap way to far, nothing better to do then be negative and @#$%!!! Just love the game and give respect instead of bashing other teams and their fans. Idiots, period.

I would have picked a team by now. This year, it is difficult to decide. Upsets, buzzer-beaters, and blow-outs keep me undecided. Either way, it is a very good tournament.

I am a MU fan and it was a great game. Hats off to Uconn. They were the better team yesterday. But to the guy whose blog the other day said "enjoy Mizzou - you are going to get spanked by Uconn". Sure didnt look like a spanking to me pal. How about a close/great game instead. The North Carolina's, Duke's, UConn's Syracuse's....Hey, the Big 12 is NO SLOUCH, we can hang/beat any of you Big East, ACC, SEC teams anyday and we have before. Your conferences just usually get all the noteriety. Thats not a knock against those conferences, as they have good teams as well. As long as it wasnt Duke I can stand losing to Uconn. They are a good team. But I will throw it out there right now, I do NOT believe Uconn will win it. Louisville or Nova can beat these guys. Face it, I think Nova or Louisville has a better style of defense and if Uconn cant dominate the boards, they lose. If MU would have at least competed in the rebound category, it could have been a different outcome. We were in it to the end despite being dominated on the boards and free throw shooting. Forget whinning about the refs, you get both good and bad calls, they are human. When I started my bracket I had Louisville winning it all. That prospect still looks pretty good:):):)

wow the refs had nothing to do with it. sure some calls were questionable, but the refs didn't shoot like crap from the free throw line. Missouri is a good team, but uconn just played better. Go Huskies!!

Thank you to the U Conn fans for their view of the officiating. I've read the same types of posts since the Marquette game. I even read a few from KU fans. NCAA basketball officiating is right along side the NHL. We missed far too many free throws. Best of luck to the Huskies! I'll be rooting for UCONN now. Win it all! An MU Alumn.

Grow up guys. The refs didn't shoot 42% from the floor and it wasn't the refs who were out rebounded 45 to 26. There's a reason why Uconn was ranked number one for a good part of the season. They were the better team last night. Crying like a five year old girl won't change that.

I've been a UCONN fan all my life. To you MIZZOU fans I've always said that NCAA basketball is the worst officiated sport. It still is. Every team gets bad calls against them. Hell, just play Duke once! Uconn won this game on experience. Missouri's time will come. They have a good team.
