Louisville dominates Arizona in 103-64 victory

INDIANAPOLIS (AP)—Rick Pitino enjoyed watching Friday night’s game almost as much as his Louisville players enjoyed celebrating.

Fun-loving forward Terrence Williams danced on the sideline. Guard Edgar Sosa posed for the television camera. Even backup Kyle Kuric dunked. For the top-seeded team in the NCAA tournament, this was more fun than a team scrimmage or a pickup game.

Earl Clark scored 19 points and had nine rebounds and the Cardinals delivered one of the most crushing blowouts in regional history with a 103-64 victory over Arizona.

“We played great tonight because we really passed the ball beautifully,” Pitino said. “It’s fun as a coach to watch the guys be so unselfish.”

Should they follow the same script Sunday, against second-seeded Michigan State in the Midwest final, the Cardinals (31-5) will return to the Final Four for the first time since 2005. The Spartans beat Kansas, the defending champs, 67-62 in the second semifinal game.

But if they play like this, they could fulfill another goal: Winning their third national championship.

The Big East now has four teams playing in this weekend’s regional finals, including its regular-season and tournament champ, Louisville. Pitino improved to 9-0 all-time in the regional semifinals.

Louisville was incredibly efficient in the highest-scoring game in its NCAA tournament history, shooting 57.6 percent from the field and dishing out 29 assists on 38 baskets. It shot 48 percent on 3-pointers and grabbed nearly as many offensive rebounds (11) as Arizona had on defense (17).

Defensively, the Cardinals were even better.

They rattled the Wildcats with constant pressure, forcing nine turnovers in the first half and 15 in the game. Arizona was so out of sync, it threw away an inbound pass in the first half and twice had ball-handlers get crossed up just dribbling up the floor.

The combination put Louisville within one point of cracking the top five for most lopsided victories in a regional round. UCLA set the record with a 49-point rout over Wyoming in 1967, and the next four all occurred before 1972.

It was by far the Cardinals’ biggest rout in their long NCAA tournament, and easily the Wildcats’ most-lopsided loss.

And the Louisville players savored every precious moment.

“We came out with more intensity, and that’s what you’ve got to do when you’re up big because it’s hard to play with a lead ,” Clark said.

It sure didn’t look hard in the semifinals.

The Cardinals built a 21-point halftime lead, then quickly put it away by opening the second half on an 18-5 run that set off the revelry.

For Arizona (21-14), the lowest seed to reach the semis at No. 12, it was an embarrassing end to a turbulent season. There was a coaching change in October, a 2-5 start in Pac-10 play and the Wildcats lost five of their last six regular-season game, putting the nation’s longest active streak of consecutive tourney appearances in jeopardy.

Yet the committee still took them, for the 25th straight year, as one of the final at-large teams in the 65-team field. For two games, it looked like the committee made the right call as Arizona beat Utah and Cleveland State in Miami.

On Friday, though, Louisville demonstrated just how wide the disparity between a 1 seed and a 12 seed can be.

Chase Budinger led Arizona with 22 points, and Jordan Hill had 14 points and 11 rebounds. But Arizona shot 38 percent from the field, and never had a chance after the opening minutes.

“They shot the ball well, they moved the ball well and, unfortunately for us, we didn’t have an answer,” interim coach Russ Pennell said. “I think there was a reason Louisville was seeded No. 1 in the tournament and they showed that tonight.”

Did they ever.

Pitino said Thursday he had never seen two teams with such similar defenses on tape. In person, it wasn’t even close.

Arizona struggled, at times, just to get the ball across midcourt and when it did, the Wildcats had trouble getting into their halfcourt offense. They couldn’t stop Louisville’s, bigger, stronger, quicker post players, and when the Cardinals didn’t go inside, their 3-point shooters were money.

Williams hit four 3s and finished with 14 points. Jerry Smith hit four more 3s and finished with 16. Clark and Sosa each added two more threes.

What impressed Pitino, though, was the Cardinals crisp passing. They continually found open shooters, leaving Pitino with a tough task before Sunday’s regional title game: Finding flaws.

“We know that we’re not going to play like this again because of the type of defense that we’re going to run into now,” Pitino said. “I’ll find something to be very upset about tonight at snack. I think a lack of humility is the greatest killer of potential. So we’re not going to fall in love with ourselves because we had a good game tonight.”

Louisville broke to a 17-9 lead, then pulled away with a 14-4 run that made it 34-19 with 6 minutes left in the first half. At halftime, it was 49-28.

Then the fun began.

During the decisive second-half run, Williams grabbed a rebound, whisked it around his back and made a perfect outlet pass to set up Clark for a 3. Later, Sosa drove in for a layup and drew a foul in front of the camera, prompting him to touch his lips and strike a pose as the Cardinals rolled to their 13th consecutive win with an exclamation point.

“It’s going to be tough to duplicate playing as well as we did tonight,” Smith said. “I think this is the best we played all season.”

You know what I'll just give you this one Mark S. the PAC-10 has way more National Championships than the Big Easy, so have fun losing to North Carolina. I didn't say a technical for a dunk dumbass, i said for all that showboating BS! how'd all them players get into college anyway, did you see that post game conference, buncha thugs if you ask me! but its ok there's a first time for everything! hey! its not every 25 straight years you Louisville in the tourney now is it lol your pathetic i'm not going as low as you Mark S. enjoy the week then let reality and karma speak for itself and yes Rick Pitino accepted the offer from UA google it! its done signed sealed delivered, feel like an idiot now i'm sure you do. and why would Memphis go into the Big Easy, they got much better class than all the thugs they have, so yeah Arizona is still up there with the DUKES AND NC AND UCLA AND KANSAS AND KENTUCKY because we all did it with class not the crap your team displays.

Two more things!! If you think Arizona is going to be able to take Pitino away from Louisville to come out to a desert conference rather than stay in the Big East, you are just stupid!! Following onto that, the Big East Conference should drop USF and invite Memphis in (although Memphis is not really a Catholic town, nor really is USF's location) as long as Calipari stays at Memphis! I am sure the University of Kentucky is going to give Calipari the pitch and really try to get him!! Calipari would have a much better chance at a National Title at a Big East team (Calhoun looks like he is going to be leaving soon) or of course at Kentucky!!!!!!

@ Zero_Guy; What planet are you from??? A technical foul for a dunk in the last 7 seconds!! Some Arizona fans have asked "Why Louisville did not put in its last three bench players earlier?", remember like most Louisville teams this one goes 10 players deep. So why whine when the last three bench players are put in and want to score with an open dunk! Give me a break!!!!!!!! Like, I said earlier, no one whines when a #1 seed team beats a #16 seed team by 39 points in the opening round, its expected! Zero_Guy, you have to ask yourself, was Arizona ready to play in The Big Dance?? Technical foul for a dunk by a kid that that gets a once in a life time chance to drive to the basket and dunk?? If Lute Olson, under Arizona in its glory days had put in his subs, would he have said "Now listen guys, you have not played for the last 20 games and this is the NCAA so I want you to just hold the ball even if you see a chance to score??? Again, Give me a break!!!!!!!

I am a die hard arizona wildcat fan, im not gonna lie, i was upset at the loss being so bad, but when you only shoot 38% from the field good luck beating anybody you play! oh well they made it farther than i was expecting them to and am happy we went farther than any other pac10 team. it just means we find out who our next coach is sooner, and can move past these few turbulent years, we kept the tournament streak alive just like lute olson's legacy. remember lute olson's legacy as we start a new legacy next year, bear down!!!

As an Arizona fan, WHATS UP WITH Louisville running up the score, posing for pictures, dunking with 7 secs left. I don't care who you are, that's disrespectful I mean who does that, this ain't high school, I knew Arizona wouldn't win but I would have liked them to lose respectively. Not this way Louisville, I was disgusted when no technicals were called during all this, but I agree Arizona just flat out lost but you didn't have to rub it in our faces, you don't kick a man when he's down. It doesn't really matter though, because Rick Pitino is coming to the University of Arizona and NORTH CAROLINA is going to take it all this year anyway. Try running up the score when your truly tested against someone your own size Louisville. BEAR DOWN!

I'm picking Louisville to win the champonship over everone this year, and will be upset if they don't wein it all. With the team they have this year and coach, there should be nothing to stop them except for themselves.

Arizona had no business being put in the "Dance." The only reason they went was to keep their appearance record alive. They lost in the first round of the Pac-10 tourney, got schooled in a sweep of the season by ASU, and had the easiest schedule in the first two rounds (Utah and Cleveland St.) Dickey V. was right, they had no business being in the tounament. Last year they made it with an 8-10 Pac-10 record? THen got thumped by UWV in the first round. Serously? THis year they were 9-9 with a "one-and-done" tourney appearance. They only beat what, 2 ranked teams this year? THis is clear, the only reason they got in the past two years is because of their "record" at stake. That is not the way it should be. You go because you earned it, not because you think you're entitled. THey have a good program and have potential, but I don't think they should use "history" as an excuse. As they say, "what have you done for me lately?" THey just need to settle their coaching situation, and get a few star recruits. They'll be back in a couple of seasons.

RAN UP THE SCORE?!?! Pitino pulled everyone he could. All he had left was the band and the cheerleaders. What was he supposed to do, tell some kid " I know this is a once in a lifetime chance for you but go out there and DON'T SCORE"
If Clark and Williams were in at the end maybe you could whine a bit. But this is the big boy league now and if you get your feelings hurt maybe you should just stay home next year.

You know something, a couple of weeks back I had added a comment about Louisville's defense. I will say it again, "offense wins games and DEFENSE wins championships! Tip off for me was @ 0207 and I found my way to the tube to witness a Defensive beatdown the Cards placed on the Wildcats of Arizona. That morning I was a chatter box, doing some commentating of my own while one Arizona fan just watched in disbelief! I want everyone to know that the bench actually got some quality minutes in this tournament and they will be called on once again to reck havoc on the hardwood against all foes! "C - A - R - D - S!!!!!!!!!"

    Thanks Mark.

This was a piece from our local paper

The end became so anticlimactic that Louisville romped to a 41-point lead late in the second half, and held up its lead even after Pitino began making wholesale substitutions in the final few minutes.
With 2:10 left, Will Scott threw an alley-oop pass to Jared Swopshire, who dunked with exclamation. Neither has averaged more than six minutes this season.
Then, with three seconds left, the 13th player on Louisville's roster, Kyle Kuric, dunked, when the Wildcats were expecting the clock to be run out, setting the final score.
For that one, though, Pitino apologized.
"Exuberance — the guy's never playing," Pitino said of Kuric. "We do want to apologize. Besides, we have great respect for Arizona."

Louisville played with heart and class. I would have been offended if they felt sorry for us and let us in it by letting up. Good Luck Cards

I love the fact that Rick Pitino continued to play the same way they did all year. I don't understand why anyone would say that he shouldn't have run up the score. It's not his fault that Arizona couldn't score or play any kind of defense. Bottom line, he did what was best for his team and should in no way feel sorry about it. I am glad Arizona took an ass whooping.....maybe it will show the selection committee that no team deserves to get in on name alone. I live in Philadelphia and am a huge Villanova fan so in no way am I bias towards Louisville but I will defend to no end what Rick Pitino and his kids did tonight. This is not junior high, if you can't take it than turn down your invitation to the tournament.

I am a huge Arizona fan! I do not think Cards did anything wrong by keeping the press on. They have to play again they must stay hungry and keep that same defensive intensity. If we didn't like it our players and coaches needed to step up and do something about it. Yes they hit everything they played a great game 29 assist they would have beat anyone tonight. Crying and b****ing doesn't make the loss easier. Yes i did get mad at the time when the kid dunked with 7 seconds left but he is a kid! He had to be excited he is in the sweet sixteen.going to the elite eight and actually on the court. I'm sure Pitino wasn't telling him to dunk it and yeah he could have told him not to but those are his kids and what coach don't wanna see his kids happy and be able to say hey I had a dunk in the sweet sixteen. Now saying all that doesnt mean I liked it it just means I can understand and I don't need to cry about it. Lets face it we were lucky to get in the tourney yest we had good wins but we also had some bad losses. We need to just be happy that this team made it this far and hope Livengood can bring in a great coach that can bring in at least 2 of the 4 top 100 recruits that aren't committed yet.

    Bear Down Arizona!!!!
