Freshman steps in as Mizzou beats Marquette 83-79

BOISE, Idaho (AP)—When the stakes were highest, Kim English was perfect at the line.

Lazar Hayward stepped over it.

That was the difference in Missouri’s 83-79 win over Marquette in the NCAA tournament Sunday.

English came off the bench for an injured teammate to make the go-ahead free throws with 5.5 seconds left. Hayward lost control and crossed the baseline before making the ensuing inbound pass for a turnover that allowed the third-seeded Tigers to ice the game.

Missouri (30-6) advances to the West Regional semis to play Memphis on Thursday.

Marquette (25-10) goes home.

“I don’t know,” Marquette’s Wesley Matthews said when asked about the crazy finish. “I don’t think I had any thoughts. I was just kind of replaying in my head, I guess, how we got to that point.”

A horror show for him.

But something much different for English—Missouri’s new star.

Coach Mike Anderson looked to the Missouri freshman with the game tied at 79 when J.T. Tiller got fouled but hurt his wrist and had to come out.

“He was sitting there auditioning for it,” Anderson said. “Kim, he just gave me that look, and sometimes you just have that feeling and he went up and shot the ball well.”

He’d been shooting the ball well before that.

He had what can only be described as an out-of-body experience during a 4 1/2 -minute shooting spree in the first half. He made three 3-pointers and scored 15 points during that stretch to help Mizzou turn a six-point deficit into a 16-point lead.

Still, English was on the bench for most of the second half, watching sixth-seeded Marquette chip away at the lead and eventually go ahead.

At the key moment, and even though English was ice cold on the bench, Anderson pointed to him.

“He just said, `Kimmie,’ and I knew what that meant,” English said. “I’m so happy that he had faith in me to get up there and knock them down. I think anybody on the bench would’ve knocked them down, actually.”

English had 17 points, DeMarre Carroll finished with 15, Matt Lawrence had 16 and Leo Lyons led the Tigers with 18, including a nifty spin under the basket for a three-point play that gave the Tigers a 79-78 lead with 48.7 seconds left after they’d trailed by four.

That, plus English’s late clutch free throws, ruined a wonderful effort from Marquette senior Jerel McNeal, who matched his career high with 30 points, and Matthews, who scored 24.

Midwest Regional

Louisville 79, Siena 72

At Dayton, Ohio, Terrence Williams had 24 points and 15 rebounds as Louisville, the overall No. 1 seed, reached the round of 16 for the second straight year.

Louisville (30-5) will play 12th-seeded Arizona on Friday in Indianapolis.

Siena (27-8) overcame a 12-point deficit in the second half and led 63-59 with 7:20 left.

Arizona 71, Cleveland State 57

At Miami, Nic Wise and 12th-seeded Arizona held on after building an early 14-point lead.

This is the 25th straight year the Wildcats (21-13) are in the tournament, but this is their lowest seeding. Wise scored 21 points.

Norris Cole scored 17 points for 13th-seeded Cleveland State (26-11).

Kansas 60, Dayton 43

At Minneapolis, 6-foot-11 Cole Aldrich posted a triple-double with 13 points, 20 rebounds and 10 blocked shots to lead defending champion Kansas.

Aldrich nearly matched the NCAA tournament record for blocks in a game (11) set by Shaquille O’Neal for LSU.

Sherron Collins added 25 points for the third-seeded Jayhawks (27-7), who will play Michigan State on Friday in Indianapolis.

Chris Wright had 10 points for 11th-seeded Dayton (27-8).

Michigan State 74, Southern California 69

At Minneapolis, Travis Walton scored a career-high 18 points and second-seeded Michigan State made it into the round of 16 for the eighth time in 12 years.

Durell Summers added 11 points and eight rebounds for the Spartans (28-6), who have reached the regional semifinals more times in the last dozen years than any team except Duke.

Dwight Lewis scored 19 points and DeMar DeRozan added 18 for USC (22-13).

East Regional

Pittsburgh 84, Oklahoma State 76

At Dayton, Ohio, Sam Young scored 32 points and DeJuan Blair posted another double-double to lead top-seeded Pitt.

The Panthers (30-4) advanced to the round of 16 for the fifth time in eight years and will play Xavier in the regional semis in Boston on Thursday night.

Obi Muonelo scored 19 points for the eighth-seeded Cowboys (23-12), who made 10 3-pointers in the first half but shot only 2-for-12 from long range after halftime.

Xavier 60, Wisconsin 49

At Boise, Idaho, B.J. Raymond scored 15 points and fourth-seeded Xavier pulled away in the second half.

Musketeers coach Sean Miller will now face his alma mater. A Pittsburgh native, he was a point guard for the Panthers and later was an assistant coach at Pitt.

Derrick Brown added 15 points and C.J. Anderson had eight rebounds for Xavier (27-7). Marcus Landry scored 18 and Trevon Hughes had 17 points for the 12th-seeded Badgers.

South Regional

Syracuse 78, Arizona State 67

At Miami, Eric Devendorf hit a pair of 3-pointers less than a minute apart and Syracuse shut off Arizona State’s rally.

Devendorf finished with 21 points and Andy Rautins added 17 for third-seeded Syracuse (28-9), which plays second-seeded Oklahoma (29-5) in Memphis on Friday.

Rihards Kuksiks scored a career-high 20 points and Ty Abbott also had 20 for the sixth-seeded Sun Devils (25-10). James Harden, the Pac-10 player of the year, was held to 10 points on 2-for-10 shooting.

What a bunch of Marquet crybabies. I've never seen such poor sportsmanship in all my life. Booing an injured opposition player - what class! You should be ashamed of your college.

Yes Marquette, I agree that Mizzou used the "elastic clause" or "necessary and proper clause" (constitution references) in order to help defeat the Golden Eagles. I wonder if Tiller's wrist was in pain while he watched the And-1 rim out and the subsequently pounded the floor repeatedly in frustration for the shot not falling. This is something I have not seen anyone bring up. In my opinion, Tiller is a coward who did not believe he could be the hero of the game. Instead, Tiller, along with his cowardly coach, disgraced the tournament with those fraudulent actions. It does not help the MU cause that Hayward made a JV move by stepping over the line.
Bottom Line: Mizzou cheated the system, but did not necessarily cheat. That rule is for players whom are genuinely injured, not too afraid to make the big free throws. Sorry MU

It was strange that the hurt player tried to check back in which by the way is not a technical as one person said. However he is their best defensive player and you don't need your injured hand to play defense with your feet but do need it to shoot.

The way that I understand the rule is that the injured player CAN NOT re-enter the game untill the ball is put into play. If the injured player does try to re emter it is a techinal Foul for a re entry violation when he went to the scorers table and reported in for the free throw shooter. A BIG T should have been called at that point and Marquett should have shot the free throws and got the ball out at mid court which would have never had let the step on the inbound line happen. They got RIPPED OFF when the ref went and told the coach "AFTER TILLER REPORTED IN AT THE REF TABLE" that he could not re enter and DID NOT CALL THE BIG T. What if Marquett had put 6 players out on the court for the in bounds play. Would the ref had said NO INFRACTION ??? I THINK NOT BIG FIX !!! PLAIN AND SIMPLE !!!

This just in: Tiller had the highest FT% on the team. Why wouldn't he have wanted to take the shots? ALso worth noting is that ANderson could have chosen Denmon to shoot instead as he was on the bench and shoots 10% better than English from the line. I guess that pretty much rules out both the Advantage and the Classless argument. And to say that English was on fire is a joke...he hadn't been in the game the entire half and had his warm-ups on. Believe whatever you want Marquette fans, I hope it makes you feel better but the bottom line is that your team would have lost even if Tiller (our best FREETHROW SHOOTER) had taken the shots.

The "pinch-shooter" rule is what it is......BUT...you couldn't help but notice the guy who was SOOOO HURT as he ran back to the scorers table to check in after the FT's. Ya--he had no guts to step to the line and shoot the throw like a man.

Basketball(I played), Football(I played), Track(pole vault, held record), Tennis(poor, great for meeting hot girls), Golf(never player, never will, caddied once, came close to tatooing some fool who said I lost his ball, you don't want to loose it don't hit it into the woods. BASEBALL, coming soon to a stadium near you, the sports above are for all the "athelete's" who can't hit the breaking ball. All brought to you to avoid withdrawal in the off season. The steroid problem, right what problem? More heat, some balls are still in orbit, shoot me up slap a number on my back when it comes at you step aside and wave the medical plan ain't that great. And lest I be critized, NASCAR the fan's want too see 180mph rollovers with pileups of at least 20 cars. Last but not least SOCCER, do not miss the big ball and accidently make contact with the little ones, the sound that man made was truly pitiful, to make matters worse I couldn't get my shoe with spikes out of his groin, being the good sport that I am I visited him in the hospital, flowers in hand, when he saw me he curled up and made that noise again, it sent a shiver right to my size 18 XXW
shoe. The last I heard he was wearing a custom made cast iron jock. I saw him once in church, as I walked up to him down he went and out came that sound, he was still down as I was running out but I believe he's OK the minister talked him through it but it went bad when the minister offered him a couple free tickets to the afternoon's big soccer match, I could hear that sound 2 blocks away .

The ACC and big East were supposed to be so good and the big 12 were bottom feeders...how is that working out?? WAKE FOREST..LMAO. Marquette was and is a mediocre team that got beat by the same thing in Mo. Crying about it is a joke. Call the Pope, maybe he can get you a do over.
