Purdue holds off Washington 76-74

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP)—Purdue was teetering. Desperate Washington was roaring back. The Huskies’ close-to-home crowd was screaming. And the stifling intensity that makes the NCAA tournament so popular blanketed the court.

Amid all that, JaJuan Johnson stood tallest.

As if on a pogo stick, Johnson blocked not one but two attempts by Washington to tie the game with a minute remaining. He also scored 22 points as the fifth-seeded Boilermakers held off a frantic charge to beat the fourth-seeded Huskies 76-74 Saturday to advance to its first regional semifinals since 2000.

“We finally got over the hump!” E’Twaun Moore said in the hallway of the arena minutes after his clinching free throws with 5.5 seconds remaining for the Boilermakers (27-9). The Big Ten tournament champions led the entire game but nearly blew a 14-point lead to the frenzied Huskies.

Now comes top-seeded Connecticut.

“A lot of people talk about offensive possessions and making shots. It always comes down to making stops,” Purdue coach Matt Painter said of the 6-foot-10 Johnson denying Isaiah Thomas’ dash to the basket and then Quincy Pondexter’s short jumper in the lane with 57.8 seconds left.

“Man, he’s just a great guy,” Moore said, laughing at his renewed love for the junior center and tallest player on the floor Saturday. “I’m just glad to have him as a teammate.”

Johnson sounded as if he didn’t know what all the fuss over his third and fourth blocked shots of the game.

“I blocked the first shot from Thomas and I realized the shot clock was getting low. So when Pondexter got the ball, I just went after it,” he said.

Thomas scored 24 points, Pondexter had 20 with 10 rebounds and Jon Brockman added 20 points with 18 rebounds—the 60th and final double-double of his career for the nation’s active leader in those—for Washington (26-9). The regular-season champion of the Pac-10 trailed by 14 with 79 seconds into the second half before getting to within two five times in the final 7:13, but never to even or ahead.

All three Huskies had reddened eyes as they struggled to comprehend that their desperation push fell just short.

“As soon as we started rolling, I knew we were going to win,” Brockman said. “That’s one of the reasons, really, it’s so hard to take. We were right there.

“It’s funny: There’s really only one happy team at the end of the NCAA tournament.”

Brockman, playing with a broken nose and a sore wrist, willed Washington back. He made a thudding free throw and then a third-chance putback with 3:07 remaining to cut Purdue’s game-long lead to 69-67.

Brockman’s seventh consecutive point came on a reverse layin underneath, keeping Washington within 73-71 with 1:36 remaining.

Johnson then made consecutive blocks, first of Thomas’ drive, then of Pondexter’s jumper in the lane with 57.8 seconds left. After Moore missed a layup, so did the 5-foot-8 Thomas on yet another daring drive to the basket, with 18.8 seconds to go.

Moore, a 76 percent foul shooter, made two free throws to make it 75-71.

Brockman hit one of two free throws with 6.8 seconds left. After a quick foul by Washington in the backcourt, Moore missed the first free throw with 5.5 seconds remaining, but made the second to send the Boilermakers to Glendale, Ariz., for a date Thursday with Connecticut, the top seed in the West Region.

Pondexter made an inconsequential shot at the buzzer. Brockman doubled over on the court as the Boilermakers jumped around before a stunned sea of purple-clad fans from up the freeway in Seattle.

“We’ll never get another player like Jon Brockman,” coach Lorenzo Romar, a one-time NBA player, said of Washington’s all-time leading rebounder and second-leading scorer, whom Romar praised for selflessness and humility. “I’ve played with the best in the world. And I’ve never known anyone like Jon Brockman.”

Purdue’s taller guards were all over the Huskies defensively outside for most of the game.

And Purdue’s motion offense from outside the foul line, something Washington hadn’t seen this season, continually produced open shots for Johnson and everyone else.

Washington kept squandering chances until Justin Dentmon, who had been 1-for-6 and tentative to take a shot, made his first basket since midway through the first half. Elston Turner pump-faked Robbie Hummel onto his fractured back and then made a 3-pointer to make it 58-54 with 9:32 remaining and set up the finish.

“The last 10 minutes of the game, they flat took us,” Painter said.

Washington missed 10 of its first 13 shots and fell behind 20-8 after 10 minutes. As Washington’s coaches stomped the floor in frustration, the half ended on an emphatic dunk by Johnson, after one of numerous tap-out second chances by Purdue, and the Boilermakers led 39-28.

They were on their way to the regionals, after second-round exits in each of their last three NCAA tournament appearances.

"If anyone actually watched the game they would have noticed at least 10 horrendous calls by the refs in favor of Purdue."

How about the ticky tack fouls that were continually called in Washington's favor over the course of the second half? Give me a break, Purdue was in serious foul trouble because of the BS fouls the Huskies were getting.

"Purdue is the only team I know more that is more annoying than Duke."

I guess Washington has the only fans that whine more and make more excuses than IU fans.

Ok, just for reference, I am a Purdue fan. That being said, there is no way that anyone can say that Purdue benefited from the refs. We had 3 people with 4 fouls, and a number with 3. We were getting called for fouls left and right just for holding our hands up to block shots. If you feel that illegal screens shouldn't be fouls, then bring it up with the NCAA, but this was by far a game where Purdue did not have an advantage from the refs at all. Purdue was getting the short end of the stick almost the whole game, especially when we were up by more than ten, and it wasn't really until the huskies started playing very aggressively that they started getting called for fouls. Call it a coincidence, but when any team plays more aggressive, they get called for more fouls. Purdue deserved to win the game hands down. Washington made a good effort at the end of the game, but given how Purdue played during this Washington home game with the refs giving Washington the benefit of a large portion of the cheap calls, you have to admit that they played one great game. If we beat UConn, then that'll be great. I don't hold much hope for that, but I will cross my fingers and watch the game adamently. Good game Huskies. I hope to see you guys play just as well next year.

I thought the refs were making ticky tack foul calls on both ends of the floor. The only difference is that the game is being held only hours from Washington's fan base, so the crowd made the questionable calls more noticeable when called against the Huskies.

lagoogler08 ----- Spoken like a True whinner! ...Go ahead and blame the lost on the fault of the refereeing! geez!...quite crying. There weren't any real questionable calls that cost the game for Washington! It was missed opportunities on Washington's part, along with good defensive playing and blocking on Purdue's part.
The Huskies just fell short! it happens in close games! ... so, just go home and cry some more, because the Big Ten beat your team.

Officiating was an issue in this game, but I feel it was an issue on both ends. Purdue has played this tenacious defense all year and never have so many fouls been called. As for Washington, I am unsure what their foul rate has been, but there were a couple of questionable calls during the game. The problem I have with the complaining by UW fans is that you got a home game against an "inferior" opponent and you were not able to pull through. You lost in your conference semis in the number 4 or 5 RPI conference and got to play a preseason top 10 RPI Number 2 Conference Tournament Champion at home. Questionable officiating was not why UW lost today, the three point shooting and Johnson's dominance inside killed Washington, as well as shaky free throw shooting by your star Jon Brockman. No one seemed to be critical of the officiating on the broadcast, and perhaps it was just that there was a lot of purple and not so much gold and black that is causing some of this bitterness. As a Purdue fan, I am proud of the effort by my Boilers and look forward to playing one of the country's best in the desert.

P.S. What was with the staredown by the UW benchwarmer when Hummel tripped and fell? Seems kind of classless to me....

as a ref, that happens, calls go ur way sometimes, sometimes they don't, what about those free throws the missed? the turnovers, stupid shots? were those the refs fault?

them not having more points that Purdue, that cost them the game

I am neither a Boilermaker or a Husky fan but I attended the game because I am a collage basketball fan. In all due respect to Purdue I feel the refs made some critical foul calls against Washington that cost them the game. Purdue played a good game particularly the first half. The Husky's I felt picked up their defensive played in the second half well enough to win the game but the Ref's shunned their efforts buy rewarding them with foul calls. It would have been a terrific game other wise. Its a shame to see a game decided by the referee's Good luck and congratulations to all the kids on both teams.

This game was almost a carbon copy of their last game, the only difference is this team is a little more solid and offensively a little better. And Rico, you hit it right on the head- playing soft in the first half, and strong in the second half---which was not consistant. When you establish your game in the first half, and change it in the second half, that looks like you are out of control in the eyes of the officials. with that said you will go deeper in the tournament with consistancy, controlled preasure and guys who can repeatedly score when called upon.

Actually, Washington plays best when they AREN'T controlled. I think you saw that. They were real passive all the first half, watching Purdue run their double pick stuff from the top. Washington isn't real good at playing just man-up ... they are at their best when their defending the ball hard. JaJuan was the real killer for Purdue, I thought. And 19-23 free throws gets it done in the tourney. I'm a Husky, but I thought Purdue deserved to win it - they made the big play at the end. Sure gonna miss watching Jon, that's for sure. Good Luck to the Boilers against the other Huskies.

nothing personal,,,just having a little fun. the huskies could be better if they played with with controlled aggression ( not rekcless aggression) which in my opion was the fatal flaw from a defensive point of view.

Way to go Purdue. If anyone actually watched the game they would have noticed at least 10 horrendous calls by the refs in favor of Purdue. The Dawgs played one helluva second half and shouldn't have to be punished by the refs. Purdue is the only team I know more that is more annoying than Duke. Purdue, good luck getting demolished by UConn when the refs don't help you win. Romar better publicly criticize the refs, fines or no fines, the reffing could not have been worse. big 10 sucks, and purdue is the worst of them all.

Can't wait to see what Digger Phelps and Seth Davis have to say on ESPN. They have bashed the Big 10 and Boilers to no end. We never trailed in that game. That is one heck of a Washington team, though.
