West Virginia stuns No. 2 Pitt in Big East tourney

NEW YORK (AP)—DeJuan Blair spent most of Thursday night sitting on the bench, mired in foul trouble and watching Pittsburgh struggle mightily against overmatched West Virginia.

Now he’ll get to sit around and watch the rest of the Big East tournament, too.

Devin Ebanks scored a career-high 20 points to lead the scrappy Mountaineers to a stunning 74-60 upset of the second-ranked Panthers, knocking out the defending champions and advancing to the semifinals for the second straight season.

West Virginia will face No. 18 Syracuse, which outlasted No. 3 Connecticut 127-117 in six overtimes—tied for the second-longest game in Division I history.

Blair, the league’s co-player of the year, managed just 14 points and five rebounds before fouling out with 1:17 left in the game.

“Of course you feel down right now, the next couple hours, the next couple days. You’re going to feel down watching the Big East, watching everybody,” Blair said. “We weren’t prepared, the foul trouble—we just didn’t grind it out like we usually do.”

Alex Ruoff added 18 points and Da’Sean Butler had 16 for West Virginia (23-10), which might be the hottest team in the nation’s deepest conference. The Mountaineers have won four of their last five, their lone loss coming to No. 5 Louisville last weekend.

After leading 36-34 at the break, coach Bob Huggins slapped on his confounding 1-3-1 zone defense and the Panthers (28-4) struggled to shoot over the top.

Pittsburgh went without a 3-pointer for the first time all season, finishing 0-for-8 from beyond the arc, and was outrebounded for the first time since Jan. 25.

The opponent that time? West Virginia.

“I think we were the aggressor. I think that’s big,” Ruoff said. “In the first two games we matched up against them, we had stretches where they kind of out-manned us.”

Sam Young scored 15 points to lead the Panthers, whose chances of securing a No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament took a big hit in what had been a friendly venue.

Pittsburgh had advanced to seven of the last eight tournament championships, winning four games in four days last year to capture the title, and was 23-8 at Madison Square Garden since 2001.

So much for that.

The Mountaineers shot 44.2 percent from the field against one of the league’s best defenses, and improved to 17-0 this season when scoring at least 70 points.

“I think the one thing I’ve really stressed in the two years I’ve been here is to learn how to play,” Huggins said, “learn how to play the game. I’m not big on run here, run here, and have a whole lot of things that are concrete. I just want them to play basketball.”

Unfortunately for Blair, a big part of the game is the officials.

The bruising forward picked up his second foul 4:01 into the game and took a seat beside coach Jamie Dixon, who kept the 6-foot-7, 265-pound Blair on the bench the rest of the first half, even as the Mountaineers slowly built a lead.

Levance Fields, whose assist-to-turnover ratio is the best in the nation, kept Pittsburgh close by repeatedly finding open teammates under the basket.

The stocky senior guard from Brooklyn hit Young on a soaring alley-oop jam with 7:41 left in the first half, then a couple minutes later made a nifty touch pass to Gilbert Brown cutting to the basket for another easy dunk and a 27-26 lead.

Butler, West Virginia’s leading scorer, got in his own foul trouble after picking up his third trying to post up on offense with 1:20 left before halftime, prompting a foot-stomping tantrum by Huggins in front of the Mountaineers’ bench.

Butler sat to start the second half, but it sure didn’t make much difference.

Ebanks’ highlight slam over the outstretched arm of Jermaine Dixon made it 45-37 just over three minutes in, and a few minutes later Blair picked up a technical foul for shoving Ruoff after a missed shot underneath the Pittsburgh hoop.

Ruoff made both free throws, setting West Virginia off on an 8-0 spurt. By the time the senior guard made a layup with 8:59 to go, the Mountaineers led 61-47 and a sizable contingent in the corner of the arena dressed in yellow was roaring in approval.

They coasted from there, right into the semifinals, one step closer to their first conference tournament title since 1984.

“We were outplayed,” Dixon said, running his hands through his slicked-back hair. “It’s just one of those games where you have to do a better job. West Virginia is a very good team. They only lose to good people.”

The irony that PITT fans think they have any room to talk amazes me. Have you been to Pittsburgh? It looks like a short bus convention. A large portion of our students/alum come from other states to attend WVU. Pitt's fans are mainly a product of your state. I am fine being called a Hillbilly/Redneck b/c it just depicts pride. Heart is something that you obviously lack after watching last nights performance. These are the games that matter! Hey Rock_77 do the gene pool and favor and take a long walk on a short pier. BTW, if we are the "other retarded sister," doesn't that make you the first??? Take a seat and watch the rest of the tourney...

    Let's Go Mountaineers!!!

When will you WVU fans start to realize that nobody likes you or your redneck hooplehead school? You're a WVU fan, which puts you one step above a retard and one step below white trash.

Congrats to you, Buddy R... there are a lot of idiotic, moronic posts in the comments to articles here at Yahoo, but yours has to be the single dumbest one I have ever seen. Yes, it was rather obvious that Rich Rod personally threw the Pitt game so that the team that U of M alums hate above all others could play for the national title. All while U of M was trying to hire Les Miles.

Most of these posts blasting Pitt, obviously written by WVU hoopjacks, are so poorly constructed they are difficult to read. The fact of the matter is you beat Pitt last night in a game that means very little. Sure Pitt wanted to get to the finals like they do every other year, but it will change nothing. Pitt still dominated WVU twice this year, Pitt will still get a #1 seed, it took WVU 30 games to get a signature win, and even if WVU wins the Big East Tourney, it will still have less wins in the Big East than Pitt did this year. Please if you want to talk smack about Pitt you should at least beat them on your home floor, instead of getting beat by a dozen. After 2 straight football and basketball wins I was wondering if this was even a rivalry anymore. At least now all you vanilla-faced rednecks can have something to toast to when you are drinking your moonshine. You beat Pitt, AT LONG LAST, congratulations.

I would like to point out a FACT ; Our TRAITOR football coach was insructed by the BIG TEN alumni to throw the Pitt game ,so OHIO STATE could play for the national title, instead of a BIG EAST team, since he was defecting to the BIG TEN. I thought it was rather obvious, since the asst coach beat a much better team than Pitt the very next game. Just know that PITT never beat wvu last yr, It was given too you by a crooked coach !

If the refs call the game right ,Blair should foul out at halftime of EVERY game ! You Pitt fans scream let them play, well playing doesn't mean shoving your defender down ,to get an open shot . Which is all Blair knows how to do ! Pitt will be out ,first time a non -conference ref rotation gets hold of them ! Revenge is SOOOOOOO SWEET ,GOOO WVU !

I think it should bother Pitt fans that our YOUNG team aside from Ruoff, played outstanding in a big game. Think of all this experience we are getting now, and how much easier it will make it on us to beat up on Pitt for years to come.

It is agreed that there was some bad calls in last night's game, but to me the eeers played one heck of a game.At times I thought Pitt got away, with quite a few fouls. The 1-3-1 really stoped them. All I can say is go eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeerrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Way to Go EEEEEEEERS! Last night was pay pack. Neutral court and yet stupid officiating both ways. Pitt fans, go have some cheese with your wine. Pitt was tired, Pitt was this, Pitt was that. Excuse me, Pitt had two byes to the Mountaineers 1 bye. Pitt just got smacked down and tapped out.

Did you even notice Blairs little smirk, then winking his eye at the cheerleader after his first foul shot then missed the second? He was not focused on the task at hand. You cannot drop your guard one second in combat or you will come home in a body bag. Pitt lost focus. Heck they did not even know how to defend 1-3-1. The eeeeeeeers rattled them the whole game playing defense. Lets Go Mountaineers!

I've read so many complaints about the officiating from last nights game, and I will agree that it was terrible. But lets not be so blind here. Butler's 3rd foul against Sam Young was a terrible call that even Jay Bilas agreed on. Blair legitmately should have fouled out with 8 minutes to play in the ballgame. He got frustrated and abandoned skills such as boxing out, for easier methods such as pulling, shoving, and throwing his 280 pounds around. True, the officiating was terrible, but it was terrible all the way around.

I don't think there is much doubt that Pittsburgh, UConn, Syracuse, Louisville, and Villanova, will all be seeded in the top four seeds of whatever division they are put in and will certainly present a worthy opponent for whoever they are matched with. The Big East Conference is probably one of the most enjoyable to watch because there are so many really good teams. Look also at the number of Hall of Fame coaches in the conference and others who will surely be elected later. What a great job of recruiting this conference has done. They easily match up with any other conference.

The referees ultimately decide the outcome of the game, as they did last night. It's the Big East, LET THEM PLAY! Referees get worse every year, it's sickening to watch.
