Anderson’s FTs lift Oklahoma State past Oklahoma

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP)—As James Anderson prepared to shoot what he said were the biggest free throws of his career, teammate Byron Eaton came up to him to try easing the tension.

“He told me I was Big Game James and that I don’t miss free throws,” Anderson said. “It was kind of funny.”

Anderson and the Cowboys were able to laugh after he made both free throws with 2.3 seconds to lift Oklahoma State to a 71-70 upset of No. 6 Oklahoma on Thursday night in a Big 12 Conference tournament quarterfinal.

Eaton had 16 points and seven assists for Oklahoma State (22-10), which snapped a five-game losing streak against Oklahoma (27-5) and all but clinched an NCAA tournament berth. The Cowboys will play No. 14 Missouri in the semifinals.

Blake Griffin had 17 points and 19 rebounds for Oklahoma, but was whistled for fouling Anderson as they tussled for a rebound after a missed shot by Eaton in the final seconds.

After Anderson’s free throws, Griffin caught a long pass from Taylor Griffin, but missed a well-guarded 3-point attempt and Tony Crocker missed a follow shot. The clock didn’t start until after Blake Griffin’s shot, and officials used television replays to determine that time had expired.

The loss probably cost Oklahoma a chance at a No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament.

While Oklahoma and Oklahoma State regularly meet at neutral sites within the state in other sports, most notably baseball, it’s a rare occurrence in basketball. Thursday’s game was only the third time in 215 meetings the Bedlam rivals had met in Oklahoma City, and the first time since 1942.

The teams hadn’t met in the postseason since 1999, when they played in the Big 12 tournament in Kansas City, Mo. The evenly split crowd at the Ford Center watched as the lead traded hands four times in the final 2:48.

“I think any Bedlam game is going to be a great atmosphere,” said Oklahoma State freshman guard Keiton Page, a native Oklahoman who scored 15 points. “Playing here at the Ford Center with the crowd split, that’s the atmosphere everyone wants to play in.”

Eaton broke a 68-68 tie by making one of two free throws with 29.8 seconds left. Crocker caught a lob from Willie Warren and scored with 14.2 seconds left to give the Sooners a 70-69 lead.

Eaton missed while trying to finish a drive, and Blake Griffin was called for a foul on the rebound on what Anderson called “a 50-50 ball.”

“I went and I grabbed the ball,” Griffin said. “They said I fouled James Anderson. There’s not much you can do about that. … It didn’t go our way.”

Anderson, the Cowboys’ leading free-throw shooter at 83.7 percent, made the first, tying the game, then endured an Oklahoma State timeout before making the second.

“I just kind of blocked everybody out,” he said. “I just focused in and relaxed myself … and I stepped up and knocked them down.”

Griffin and Oklahoma coach Jeff Capel both said there was contact on Griffin’s final shot, although no foul was called.

Harris had 13 points and Obi Muonelo had 12 as the Cowboys won despite being outrebounded 39-29.

Warren and Austin Johnson each scored 13 points for Oklahoma, but the Sooners committed 19 turnovers and went 3-of-19 from 3-point range.

“The game was not won or lost on those last two possessions,” Capel said. “The game was lost for us throughout with the 19 turnovers. That’s where the game was lost. The game was lost because of our inability to make shots, because we were weak with the basketball. The game was lost because we didn’t have movement on offense at times. We were very, very stagnant.”

Oklahoma State coach Travis Ford said the Cowboys tried to front Griffin defensively at all costs and hope the Sooners’ outside shooters weren’t hitting. Perhaps because of that strategy, Oklahoma State dealt with foul trouble much of the game, as forward Marshall Moses picked up two quick early fouls while defending Griffin and received his fourth with 17:26 left.

At the 13:50 mark, Anderson, the Cowboys’ leading scorer, was whistled for his fourth foul, and he joined Moses on the bench.

But he did so with Oklahoma State in the midst of a 9-0 run, fueled by seven points from Eaton, that gave the Cowboys their biggest lead to that point, 49-41 with 13:26 left. A layup by Terrel Harris extended the margin to 54-45 with 11:12 left.

But the Sooners rallied to tie the game at 56 with 9:27 left behind Warren, who had a three-point play, then assisted Juan Patillo on another three-point play and Crocker on a 3-pointer during an 11-2 run.

Anderson and Moses returned with 4:35 left and the Cowboys nursing a 64-62 lead, but Moses fouled out at the 3:44 mark and was slapped with a technical foul for expressing his displeasure with the call.

Griffin recorded his 26th double-double of the season, tops in NCAA Division I, but managed only nine shots after scoring 33 points in the Sooners’ win over Oklahoma State on Saturday in the regular-season finale.

“I thought we did an excellent job on the big fella, as good a job as we can possibly do,” said Ford, referring to Griffin. “We just didn’t want to give him 25, and we did a pretty good job of that.”

John # 5 needs to follow college ball a little more closely. The Big East isn't any better than- enter other conference here- ? The ACC and Big East are all alone. The other conferences are kiddie leagues. We'll wait for the weaker teams to get through the early rounds because of weak competition. In the end, the Big East or ACC wins it. As for OU, they are a good western team but they don't have a chance to win it. In fact, the elite 8 would be an astounding run for them.

I like OU, but really OU got a lot of calls that went there way. Blake Griffin moves his pivot foot a lot and also just all out shoves the defenders to get the advantage. If they called a close game he would fould out before half time. One thing that I had never seen before was when Willie Warren just ran down the floor at the end of the game and after he took four steps the ref gave him a time out. Shouldn't that have been traveling? OSU has a better team than OU, and OU has one superstar (Blake Griffin). OSU the team outplayed OU the superstar and that is why they won the game in spit of all the favorable calls that Griffin gets.

Blake Griffin SHOULD NOT HAVE EVEN BEEN IN THE GAME at the end, he should have fouled out 10 minutes before, without the superstar treatment, big friggin' baby!

OU didn't deserve to win, based on how they played. But OSU didn't play all that well either. OSU shot 6 free throws under 1:22 seconds. OU shot 2. Blake was called for a foul with 2.3 seconds on a ball that was literally a 50/50 ball. And there is no doubt Griffin was hammered when he caught the ball on his last shot attempt. Tony Crocker was also shoved under the basket with his no time left follow shot. The irony is comical. OU didn't win comfortably because of the way they actually played, but the officials can & did decide the outcome. If you don't believe that then you just like to hate on OU. OU is struggling. there is no doubt. But most teams would love to struggle and be in the games like they are. If they can turn it around quickly. lookout. btw the Big East is good but they are no better than PAC-10, BIg 12, Big Ten & ACC. watch and see.

I just love all you so called wanna be experts out here. Big East, Pac-10 the best??? The Big 12 is one of the best conferences. All this arguing back and forth about refs being fair, life isn't fair. They are human, and imperfect people. I agree that some of these calls are right in front of their faces and like hello wasn't that a foul? As far as Blake Griffin, if you so called experts watch the whole game, I mean watch what goes on away from the ball, you'd see people banging, holding, an elbowing him all the time. Can they call fouls everytime? Just like in football they could call holding on pretty much every play. But it would be nice if at the end ot the game they would be consistent and not call tick tack fouls. The Big 12 Refs do not seem to be consistent or fair. But the players have to deal with it and not let it get in their heads that they didn't get the call. As Capel said, "we lost it because of 19 turnovers, 3-19 from beyond the arc." That's the reality one or two calls doesn't win or lose a game, unless they let the calls get in their heads. We will see starting next week how good the Big12 is, Rock Chalk Jayhawk

Wow, people whining because Griffin "the protect one" didn't get a foul called in his favor. He ALWAYS gets fouls called in his favor. Here's the deal Sooner fans: when the refs call the games evenly in the tournament, Griffin will be in foul trouble all the time and you guys will be out early.

It does not matter if the Big 12 is over rated, under rated or even rated. So, what if the Big East stomps everyone. Just enjoy the games. This is the best time of the year for any sports. MARCH!

huge win for cowboys and great atmosphere in okc...chances for both teams...osu needs to find
a way to keep moses in the game...his play nearly cost his team and kudos to coach ford for seeing
that and switching brown for moses....another reason why this is ultimate team game......matchup
against missouri will be tough as they go the deapest of any club...but doable...go cowboys...

are there really people trying to say the refs were lop sided favoring the pokes? REALLY? so when a sooner walks 4 steps without dribbling before a time out is called......but no traveling is called.....or just to add to the statements about the shot clock...the article isnt rally saying it right, it didnt just wait until after griffins shot....it didnt start until after the follow up shot. there were 2.3 seconds left on the clock...yet you can count 5 seconds after griffin gets the ball to shoot before the clock starts. if the situation had been reversed and osu was in the situation, they wouldnt have reviewed it at all. they would have called the game right then and there. and just one more thing.....okc is over an hour from stillwater.....its like 10 minutes from norman......im not sure what they mean by neutral site, but if you can hear the cheers from norman at the "neutral" site...then its really not too neutral
