Baylor tops No. 11 Kansas 71-64 in Big 12 tourney

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP)—Coach Scott Drew says everyone on Baylor can hear when LaceDarius Dunn is open. No. 11 Kansas does, too.

The Jayhawks just couldn’t do enough to stop him.

Dunn hit six 3-pointers and scored 24 points, leading a late surge as Baylor rallied after blowing a 17-point lead to stun No. 11 Kansas 71-64 in the Big 12 tournament quarterfinals on Thursday.

“We kept telling ourselves we can’t get down and just can’t give up,” said Dunn, who is constantly calling for the ball when he’s not defended. “We just kept fighting, and it turned out great for us.”

It was the first time in the tournament’s 13-year history that Kansas lost its opening game, and the first time that a No. 9 seed had taken down the top seed.

“It’s disappointing,” Tyshawn Taylor said. “We worked real hard to get here, and we let this one slip away from us.”

The three-time defending champions made up the deficit quickly and led by five before Dunn fueled a decisive 12-0 run for the Bears (19-13).

Kansas (25-7) became only the second top-seeded team to lose its opening game at the Big 12 tournament. Baylor was also responsible for the other upset, beating Iowa State in 2001. That was the Bears’ only other trip to the tournament semifinals. They’ll face Texas on Friday for a chance to reach their first ever championship game.

This season opened with high hopes, and Baylor spent several weeks in the Top 25 before a complete collapse in conference play. Now, it’ll take a run of four wins in four days to earn the Big 12’s automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.

“We didn’t end the Big 12 season like we wanted to, but we couldn’t hang our heads going into this,” guard Henry Dugat said. “We knew coming into this that it was a new season and we had to leave it all on the line in order to accomplish what we needed to do.”

After a 12-1 start to the season that included wins against Arizona State, Providence and NCAA-bound Portland State, the Bears tumbled all the way to a 5-11 record in Big 12 play.

“It was like putting a weight vest on you. It was 10 pounds after losing four games in a row. And then when we lost five in a row, it went to 20 pounds,” Drew said. “It’s tough when you have expectations and you’re not meeting them. You’re frustrated. That’s how the conference season went for us.

“Now, once we got into the conference tournament, the vest came off because it’s a new season.”

Sherron Collins scored 14 of his 16 points in the second half to lead the Jayhawks, but he airballed a potential tying 3-pointer with 26 seconds left. Marcus Morris and Taylor added 12 points apiece for Kansas.

The Jayhawks—the defending national champions—are solidly in the NCAA tournament, so the only thing in jeopardy is whether they’ll get to play close to home in Kansas City, Mo., in the first round.

“Today’s a reality check. The first thing we’re doing is going back, as soon as we get through at the hotel, and we’re going to go to school and make all the players walk around class tomorrow with all the other students wondering why the heck they’re back here already,” Jayhawks coach Bill Self said.

“And then we’re going to practice as hard as we’ve ever practiced the next two days and get them thinking about that as opposed to worrying about what just happened.”

Kansas lost all five starters from last year’s championship team, leaving Collins and center Cole Aldrich as the only ones with significant experience.

Collins struggled through 6-for-20 shooting, bracketing 1-for-8 stretches around one run of four straight baskets to start the second half. Aldrich took only five shots and finished with eight points and 14 rebounds.

“We’re not very tough if we can’t come back from this. You shouldn’t base your entire psyche or your confidence level on one game,” Self said. “I think we’ve probably got some confidence over time, but we did a bad job today as a group.”

Baylor got off to a hot start behind Dunn’s three 3-pointers and 11 points, and took a 30-13 lead on Curtis Jerrells’ 3 from the left wing.

Aldrich then started a 9-0 Kansas comeback with four points off of offensive rebounds, and the Jayhawks were already back within 37-33 when Taylor finished the first half with a 3-pointer from the right wing. The rest of the lead was gone when Collins converted a spinning layup with his back to the basket just over 2 minutes into the second half.

Reed hit a tiebreaking 3-pointer from the right corner with 9:40 left to put Kansas up for the first time since the opening minute, and Markieff Morris’ putback stretched the lead to 58-53 before Dunn got the Bears back on track.

He had two 3-pointers and a steal for a fast-break layup in the Bears’ go-ahead spurt, and his 3 from the right wing gave the Bears a 65-58 edge with 3:41 remaining.

Tyrel Reed and Collins responded with back-to-back 3-pointers to pull the Jayhawks back within one, but Mamadou Diene protected the lead by swatting away Collins’ potential go-ahead shot in the lane with 1:57 left. Rogers hit a pair of free throws at the other end before Collins missed on another drive to the basket before missing everything with his final 3-point attempt.

Almost an exact replica of the Tech game. A single solid-but-not-stellar 3-point shooter gets uncharacteristically hot throwing up ill-advised shots from outside the arc on a night when Collins struggles offensively and Hawks get very little production from Aldrich. Nevertheless the Hawks showed toughness in both games coming back from huge deficits on the road with their tough defense and disciplined/balanced offense, only to fall victim to the uncharacteristically hot hand of a single-shooter attack late in the game. It's a shame they couldn't close the comeback in either case but they they continue to prove their resilience which will build confidence for the tournament. Everyone knew Baylor was a lot better than their nine-seed but its still disappointing to let that one go. Even so, the Hawks have the toughness and talent to go deep in the dance and I expect them to make a good showing. Rock Chalk!

As for the Big East...when a lower seed team knocks off a top seed in the Big East the arm-chair pundits chalk it up to conference depth and toughness. When the same thing happens in the Big 12, the explanation is that the top ranked teams choked. Throughout the year Big 12 teams have carried RPI rankings higher than the media, coaches or fan polls, while the Big East RPI rankings have lagged their inflated subjective rankings. This is because the geographical center of the sports media establishment is located well east of the Appalachian Mountains and they continue to look for self-referential explanations to support their predisposed bias.

I am a huge KU fan and what I have seen from this team is alot better that I thought it would be after the way the season started. We lost to a Syracuse team who beat UCONN last night in a game we gave away, and I think that we are much better that we were then now. And Baylor has a good team they have underachieved this year, yes I think that KU was better but they did not show up yesterday. I hope that we can do well in the tournament, but if we don't i am DAMN proud if the Jayhawks this year.

hey, Mark S, can you read? The article already said KU's a lock for the NCAA tourney, I don't know how you think they're NIT bound. Typical KU hater,so quick to bag on anything KU does without checking any facts. And what's so great about your Big East conference, all your top ranked teams are losing too? Do a little bit of simple reading before you say something dumb.

This was the best thing that could have happened to the "Hawks" this year; come tournament time they will now be "FOCUSED", not take ANYONE for granted, and likely make an ELITE 8 run, which would be quite an accomplishment in this REBULIDING YEAR!!!

jayhawk d i am truly sorry that your mother did not get to see that awesome game last year when the hawks won it all. however, you can't say that you are not disappointed by their performance yesterday. i am a true fan, i always have been, but the embarrassment comes from THE TOTAL LACK OF EFFORT against a team they should've beat. yes they won the conference outright and that by itself is truly amazing especially with the way they have played the last 2-3 weeks. I appreciate their effort at all times, but not putting forth an effort like they did yesterday, that is what gets me. one more thing, NEVER QUESTION MY LOYALTY to this KU team or any KU team that has come before or any that come after. I am a true supporter, i just hate getting kicked in the crotch by a team like Baylor because we decided to watch the ball instead of playing any. true fans know how to love and criticize the team they root for. it's not all rainbows an unicorns.

Mark S........An unranked 23-10 team beating the 2nd ranked team in the country doesn't SHOCK you as much as as an unranked 19-13 team beating the 11th ranked team with a bunch of Freshman and Sophomores??? I'm still looking for the SEVERAL marquee wins West Virginia had before this one as well. Say something funny and maybe I'll laugh.

Relax people- I'm not even a Jayhawk fan and I think you guys are being to rough on them- they've had a great season, and will probably be a 3 or 4 seed in the tourney after a ton of graduation losses from last year- cut them some slack, Self has done a great job.

What is wrong with all of you who are trashing KU? A real fan stands by their team no matter what. Ku was picked to be 4th or 5th in the Big 12 conference. What do we do? We win the conference! We lost all of our starting lineup from last year and a few others. It is a rebuilding year for the team. We have some very talented players that will have experience and not be so young. A lot has been laid on the shoulders of Cole and Sherron. The have done very well, especially with all the youngsters. Most sports commentators did not say KU would do great things this year, even predicting they might not even go to the NCAA. They never said this team was like last year's team unless you are listening to some idiot that knows nothing. If you are embarrassed as a fan then you are not truly a fan. I relish every play of every game, whether we lose or win. Of course winning is a lot more fun. Each fantastic play that a player makes is fun and uplifting. Why can't you enjoy all the little things? Last year when we won the championship I was filled with the most wonderful feeling. But I regretted one thing, my mom had died one month before we won. I had told her all year that this was the year, and it broke my heart that she did not live to see it and know how happy I was. It has been so hard this year and I believe that this KU team has made it a little more bearable for me. I love those boys like they were my own. If you can not appreciate their effort then your priorities in life are wrong. Thank you Coach and players for giving us a great time. Remember we aren't done yet. No matter the outcome, I will enjoy each wonderful play. Go Jayhawks! SEMPER FI!!!! Always faithful. Jayhawk Dix

As Chris Piper put it on the KU radio broadcast: I'm tired of seeing Kansas dig itself in so many holes.

Dig too many holes, and sooner or later you'll be buried alive.

Boo hoo -- first Bucknell, then Bradley, now another Killer B. Here's hoping Boise State doesn't make the tournament. :--

Schawn D has no sense of humour!!! Of course I know Pitt was upset by West Virginia, but West Virginia is a strong team with several marquee wins already! It does not shock me like Baylor man handling KU! Pitt will likely still get a #1 seed, but KU can say good bye to its #2 seed, and OU can say good bye to its #1 seed!!
