Niagara closes out Iona 65-53
NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. (AP)—Demetrius Williamson had 15 points and Niagara scored the final 17 points of the game to defeat Iona 65-53 on Monday night.
Benson Egemonye added 14 points, Tyrone Lewis had 13 and Bilal Benn had 11 for the visiting Purple Eagles (17-6, 8-3 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference), who split the season series with the Gaels.
Gary Springer and Milan Prodanovic scored 14 points apiece for Iona (10-13, 5-7), which was held scoreless for the final 10:59 of the game.
Lewis and Williamson each scored 11 points in helping Niagara to a 36-35 lead at halftime.
There were 15 lead changes in the game before the Purple Eagles pulled away.
The Gaels’ final points came on Prodanovic’s 3-pointer to give Iona a 53-48 lead with 10:59 remaining.
Williamson’s layup with 6:49 left provided Niagara with a 54-53 lead and the Purple Eagles never trailed after that.
Niagara shot 47.2 percent from the field to 38.8 percent for Iona. The Purple Eagles held the edge in points off turnovers 27-9.
