Denver edges South Alabama 56-54
DENVER (AP)—Nate Rohnert scored 12 points and made the game-winning basket with five seconds left to lead the University of Denver to a 56-54 win over South Alabama on Thursday night.
Rohnert also tallied two rebounds, two steals and a block in 38 minutes of play.
Rob Lewis added 11 points for Denver (9-11, 4-5 Sun Belt Conference), which led 37-28 at halftime.
The Jaguars (11-10, 4-6) were paced by Deandre’ Coleman with 17 points and nine rebounds. Teammate Brandon Davis added 15 points and seven rebounds.
The Pioneers were four points behind with 1:55 left in the game when Nigel Peter-Denman went to the free-throw line for Rohnert, who was bleeding and forced to the bench. Peter-Denman sank both shots.
Brian Stafford made a 3-pointer to give Denver a 54-53 lead, but South Alabama’s C.J. Garner evened the score by making one of two free throws with 39 seconds remaining.
Rohnert made a layup with five seconds left to seal the win.
