San Diego State beats Utah 72-63
SAN DIEGO (AP)—San Diego State won its fifth straight game, beating Utah 72-63 in a Mountain West Conference game Saturday afternoon.
Ryan Amoroso scored 17 points and Lorrenzo Wade and D.J. Gay added 11 points each for the Aztecs (12-3, 2-0 MWC).
Luke Nevill, the 7-foot-2 center from Australia, had 17 points and seven rebounds and Shaun Green had 13 points for Utah (10-6, 1-1 MWC), which had its four-game winning streak snapped.The win marked the first time San Diego State has beaten Utah three straight times in its history.
Utah scored the first three points of the game and never led thereafter as San Diego State shot off to a 16-5 lead early on.
Amoroso scored 15 of his points in the first half, including a buzzer-beating three-pointer that gave the Aztecs a 33-26 lead at the half. Amoroso also had a team-high eight rebounds. Wade, making his first start of the season, scored nine of his 11 points in the second half and helped key an 11-5 run that gave San Diego State a 51-40 lead after Utah had closed to within five points at 40-35. Wade also had six rebounds.
The Aztecs grabbed their largest lead of the game at 60-48 with 5:11 left in the second half after Utah coach Jim Boylen was assessed a technical foul.
The 12-3 start matches San Diego State’s bests start through 15 games since the 1984-85 team opened with an identical mark. It also matches the Aztecs’ best start after 15 games in its Division 1 history, which dates back to the 1970-71 season.
