EL PASO, Texas (AP)—Stefon Jackson scored 33 points and Julyan Stone had 12 assists to lead Texas-El Paso past New Mexico State 84-69 Saturday night for a split of the annual series.
Jackson was 11-of-22 from the field and 9-of-12 on free throws, while Randy Culpepper added 11 points for the Miners (7-4).
Hamidu Rahman led the Aggies (5-5) with 19 points, while Jahmar Young had 18 points, five rebounds and six assists. But New Mexico State was undone by 33 percent shooting, including just 27 percent in the first half.
After New Mexico State scored the first bucket of the second half to pull within four at 39-35, the Miners went on a 13-2 run for a 52-37 lead with 16:53 remaining. Jackson had the first four points, and Jason Jones had a 3-pointer and a put-back of a missed 3-pointer by Jackson.
New Mexico State beat UTEP 90-78 last weekend.
