CEDAR CITY, Utah (AP)—Davis Baker scored 21 points and David Marek added 14 points and seven assists as Southern Utah defeated Indiana-Purdue-Fort Wayne 78-62 on Thursday night.
Jake Nielson scored 14 points off the bench, and Tyler Quinney had 12 for the Thunderbirds (3-4, 2-0 Summit), who shot 57 percent from the field.
David Carson led IPFW (3-4, 0-1) with 20 points. He was followed by Deilvez Yearby with 13 points and Ben Botts with 10.
A John Cliffords dunk off a Cory Davis assist gave Southern Utah its largest lead of the first half, 31-17, with 4:30 to play.
Botts hit a 3-pointer eight minutes into the second half, getting IPFW back within six points, 48-42. The Thunderbirds responded with a 10-3 run that included a jumper and two free throws by Nielson.
Baker hit two free throws to give Southern Utah its biggest lead, 76-58, with 1:02 remaining.
