FAIRFIELD, Conn. (AP)—Ryan Howard led four players in double figures with 15 points to lead Sacred Heart over Yale 63-57 on Sunday.
Joey Henley added 11 points and a game-high 12 rebounds as the Pioneers (1-3) won their home opener. Chauncey Hardy chipped in with 11 points and Shane Gibson added 10.
Yale (1-4) got a game-high 20 points and eight rebounds from Ross Morin. Alex Zampier added 17 points and Porter Braswell finished with seven.
Yale led 17-14 midway through the first half before Sacred Heart went on an 8-0 run and never trailed again.
Sacred Heart led 26-21 at the half and stretched the lead to as much as eight points in the second half before the Bulldogs tied the score at 50 with 5:14 to play.
But Hardy hit a three-pointer to give the Pioneers the lead for good. Howard made four straight free throws to ice the game in the final minute.
