CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (AP)—Johnny Moran scored 21 points to lead Northern Iowa to a 74-67 win over Texas Southern on Sunday night.
Moran was 6-of-8 from 3-point range and added five rebound for Northern Iowa (2-1). Adam Koch had 18 points and Kwadzo Ahelegbe added 11 for points for the Panthers.
Matthew Miller scored a game-high 28 points for the Tigers (0-3), but no other player reached double digits, though the team shot 68 percent from the field in the second half.
Northern Iowa pounced on Texas Southern early, building a 33-23 advantage in the first half on 13-for-26 shooting. Though the Tigers managed a strong second-half effort, it wasn’t enough to overcome strong guard play by the Panthers.
Texas Southern lost its leading rebounder, Ricky Boyles, who fouled out with 1:12 left to play in the game. Northern Iowa kept the Tigers off the offensive glass all game, holding Texas Southern to six offensive rebounds, and outrebounded the Tigers 30-26.
