NEW YORK (AP)—Jay Greene scored 22 points and Darryl Proctor added 16 as Maryland-Baltimore County defeated Columbia 66-52 in the title game of the Tyler Ugolyn-Columbia Classic on Saturday.
In an earlier game, Bryant defeated Quinnipiac 59-50 for third place.
Greene, the tournament’s most valuable player, had 13 of his points in the first half as the Retrievers (3-1) built a 30-22 halftime lead. Rich Flemming added 13 for UMBC.
Joe Bova and Niko Scott led Columbia (2-2) with 11 points apiece.
Columbia cut the lead to four with 14:49 to play, but Flemming responded with a three-point play on a layup and followed with a jump shot to extend the lead to 41-32. The Lions never got closer than seven the rest of the way.
Leading 14-10 with 12:30 left in the opening half, the Retrievers went on a 12-5 run that extended the margin to 26-15 with Greene scoring seven points in the spurt.
Tyler Ugolyn was a Columbia basketball player who died in the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001.
