CHICAGO (AP)—Josh Mayo had a game-high 27 points to lead Illinois-Chicago to an 84-77 win over Northern Iowa on Wednesday night.
Mayo was 3-of-4 from 3-point range and 12-for-12 from the foul line for Illinois Chicago (1-1). Tori Boyd scored 17 points and Rob Eppinger added 10 points for the Flames.
Jordan Eglseder led Northern Iowa (1-1) with 23 points and 10 rebounds. Ali Farokhmanesh added 20 points, including six 3-pointers, and Adam Koch chipped in 12 points.
Illinois-Chicago trailed 33-31 at halftime, but pulled away in the second half on a 15-0 run.
The Flames led by as many as 17 with about four minutes left, but Farokhmanesh hit three 3-pointers to pull the Panthers to within five. The Flames squashed the rally by going 6-for-7 from the free-throw line.
