AKRON, Ohio (AP)—Brett McKnight scored 12 second half points, including a 3-pointer that put Akron in front for good, as the Zips beat Canisius 56-46 Saturday night.
Canisius (0-1) led 26-22 at halftime and changed leads with Akron several times until McKnight’s shot put Akron (1-0) up 42-39 with 5:28 remaining. Darryl Roberts followed with a steal and his own 3-pointer, and McKnight made several layups and free throws over the next few minutes to help seal it for the Zips.
Frank Turner scored 12 points and Chris Gadley had 10 points and 10 rebounds for the Golden Griffins.
McKnight, who didn’t start and didn’t score in the first half, led the Zips in scoring. Roberts added 10 points.
Canisius outrebounded Akron 47-27, but the Zips grabbed 14 steals to Canisius’ four.
