Stone scores 19 to lead UTEP

EL PASO, Texas (AP)—Julyan Stone scored 19 points and grabbed eight rebounds for Texas El-Paso, which beat Texas Southern 69-63 on Friday night in a season opener.

Randy Culpepper scored 16 points and Stefon Jackson scored 15 points for the Miners. Kareem Cooper had 10.

Michael Drewy had 15 points and 15 rebounds to lead Texas Southern.

UTEP led 36-26 at halftime.
