MIAMI (AP)—Nick Taylor?s layup with 53.8 seconds remaining broke a 54-54 tie to propel Florida International to a 57-54 win over Eastern Kentucky on Friday night.
Taylor finished with a career high 14 points with five assists and teammate Michael Dominguez added 17 points, 14 of those in the second half, as the Golden Panthers (1-0) came back from a 10-point halftime deficit to win. Freshman center Freddy Asprilla recorded a double-double of 13 points and 11 rebounds in his collegiate debut.
Mike Rose led all scorers with 18 points and Justin Stommes had 16 for the Colonels (0-1).
EKU led by as many as 12 in the second half, 42-30, on a Joshua Jones 3-pointer with 13:06 to play before FIU mounted its comeback.
The Golden Panthers went on a 22-10 run and tied the score at 52 on a Dominguez layup off a steal with 4:34 to go.
