Viet’s 3 lifts Northern Iowa past Wichita State 77-75 in OT

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (AP)—Adam Viet hit a 3-pointer with 11 seconds left in overtime as Northern Iowa beat Wichita State 77-75 on Wednesday.

Adam Koch led Northern Iowa with 16 points, Jared Josten scored 15 and Eric Coleman added 14 points and 11 rebounds.

Viet scored nine points, six of them in overtime as the Panthers ended a two-game losing streak.

Northern Iowa (15-10, 7-7 Missouri Valley Conference) hit four of their 10 3-pointers in overtime and scored the first six points of the extra period. Viet extended the lead to 73-65 after hitting a 3 with 1:25 left.

The Shockers (10-15, 3-11) rallied with a 10-1 run, capped by Gal Mekel’s 3-pointer with 19 seconds left that gave them a 75-74 lead. Viet hit the game-winner eight seconds later, and Matt Braeuer then missed a 3-pointer on the other end.

The teams were tied 30-30 at halftime, and Northern Iowa led 47-37 with 12:32 left before the Shockers chipped away.

Northern Iowa fell behind 62-61 after Mekel hit a 3 with 29 seconds left, but the Panthers sent the game to overtime when Kerwin Dunham hit one of two free-throw attempts.

P.J. Couisnard led the Shockers with 22 points, Braeuer scored 16 and Mekel added 15.
