Brand leads Appalachian State past Elon, 56-62
BOONE, N.C. (AP)—Kellen Brand scored 17 points and Jeremy Clayton had 12 points and a career-high 17 rebounds to help Appalachian State to a 56-52 win over Elon on Monday night.
Clayton also had six blocks as the Mountaineers dominated inside in bouncing back from a loss to Chattanooga on Saturday that snapped a seven-game winning streak.
Jeremi Booth added 12 points for Appalachian State (13-7, 8-3 Southern Conference) and hit 1 of 2 free throws with 13 seconds left for the final margin.
Brett James had 16 points and 10 rebounds and Ola Atoyebi added 12 points and six rebounds for Elon (7-13, 5-7), which has lost three straight and six of seven.
The Phoenix led by as many as seven in the first half before the Mountaineers took control in the second half, building as much as an eight-point lead with 4:24 left.
James’ 3-pointer with 16 seconds left cut Appalachian State’s lead to 3, but Booth hit a free throw and Elon’s T.J. Douglas missed a 3 with five seconds left.
