Marcus Lewis leads Oral Roberts to 76-55 win over Western Illinois
TULSA, Okla. (AP)—Marcus Lewis made all six of his shots from the field and had 13 points with six rebounds to help lead Oral Roberts past Western Illinois 76-55 on Saturday night.
Lewis, a 6-foot-8 junior forward, had five points in an opening 8-0 spurt by the Golden Eagles, who never led by less than six during the rest of the game. Moses Ehambe also had 13 points for the Golden Eagles.
ORU (12-5, 7-0 Summit League) matched its best start in league play since joining what was known before this season as the Mid-Continent Conference in the 1997-98 season. The Golden Eagles also started 7-0 last year.
Jerryck Owens-Murrey and David Jackson paced the Leatherrnecks (8-10, 3-4) with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Owens-Murrey had a game-high 10 rebounds.
The Golden Eagles, who led 35-22 at halftime, did not let Western Illinois get any closer than 12 points in the second half.
ORU’s lead was at 46-33 before going on a 13-2 run that was capped by a Lewis basket that made it 59-35 with 9:04 left. The Golden Eagles’ biggest lead was at 73-48 with 2:59 remaining.
The Golden Eagles shot 53 percent from the field (29-of-55) while Western Illinois shot 32 percent (18-of-56).
Ehambe connected on a trey to give ORU its largest lead of the first half, 28-14, with 6:46 remaining before intermission. Ehambe had a team-high eight points in the first half.
ORU led by 13 at halftime despite making only 2-of-10 free throws during the first 20 minutes while Western Illinois was 11-of-13. The Leathernecks, however, were just 5-of-20 from the field in the first half and did not have a basket in the last 5:05. ORU was 11-of-20 from the field before halftime.
