Late baskets by Hernandez lead A&T past Coppin St.
GREENSBORO, N.C. (AP)—Angelo Hernandez scored on a layup with 2:05 left, and added a jumper more than one minute later to rally North Carolina A&T to a 59-56 victory over Coppin State Monday night.
The Eagles were up by 48-36 with 10:57 left after a 3-pointer by Tywain McKee, who scored 19 points and was the only Coppin State player in double figures.
A&T (6-9, 1-2 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) responded with a 17-4 run capped by Steven Rush’s 3-point basket with 5:03 left.
Coppin State (3-13, 0-3) regained the lead at 54-53 on a pair of free throws by A’Daeron Duncan at 3:20. But after the Eagles missed a shot, Hernandez connected on his layup to give the Aggies the lead for good. His jumper came at 1:02 to push the edge to 57-54.
McKee hit two free throws with 38 seconds left for Coppin State’s last points. Austin Ewing added two free throws with 21 seconds remaining to clinch A&T’s win.
Hernandez had 12, and Rush and Jason Wills scored 11 apiece for the Aggies, who also got 11 rebounds and nine blocked shots from Thomas Coleman.
