BETHLEHEM, Pa. (AP)—Garrison Carr scored 26 points and Derrick Mercer added 14 to lead American to a 71-54 victory over Lehigh in the Patriot League opener for both teams Saturday night.
Carr shot 6-for-8 from 3-point range and American (9-7, 1-0) was 11-for-18 from long distance. Brian Gilmore added 10 points for the Eagles, who shot 59 percent (13-for-22) in the first half and held a 10-point lead at the break.
American shot 16-for-19 from the line and finished with 16 assists.
Marquis Hall scored 13 points, Rob Keefer 12 and Zahir Carrington 11 for the Mountain Hawks (7-8, 0-1). Brian White added eight points and a game-best 11 rebounds.
The Mountain Hawks lost their conference opener for the first time since the 2000-01 season and had their four-game winning streak against American halted.
