Oakland, Mich. 74, Centenary 61
ROCHESTER, Mich. (AP)—Derick Nelson scored 20 points and Erik Kangas added 17 to lead Oakland to a 74-61 victory over Centenary on Thursday night.
The game was Oakland’s first at home since shocking then-No. 23 Oregon on Dec. 22 at The Palace of Auburn Hills. The Golden Grizzlies (9-7, 4-1 Summit League) have won five of six after a 4-6 start.
The Gents (7-9, 1-3) have lost five straight.
Johnathan Jones added 12 points for Oakland, which outrebounded Centenary 34-17.
Nick Stallings led the Gents with 18 and Tyrone Hamilton added 16.
The Golden Grizzlies appeared to take control when they scored the final 10 points of the first half to take a 37-26 lead, but they couldn’t put the Gents away.
Centenary was within 52-51 with 7:46 to play, but Oakland scored the next 11 points to garner some breathing room.
In all, the Gents went nearly five minutes without a point, ruining the chances of upsetting the Golden Grizzlies.
