Jackson St. 81, Alabama St. 71
JACKSON, Miss (AP)—Jeremy Caldwell scored 18 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead Jackson State to an 81-71 win over Alabama State on Monday.
Jackson State (4-11, 2-0 Southwestern Athletic Conference) outscored Alabama State 22-4 during the last six minutes of the first half to take a 43-34 halftime lead.
The Tigers’ increased the lead in the second half to 55-41 on a 3-point shot from Catraiva Givens with 14:12 left in the game.
Alabama State (5-7, 1-1) closed the gap to 66-62 on a 3-pointer from Jamarr Sanders with 4:58 remaining. But the Tigers got seven points from Givens and held the Hornets to two field goals in the final four minutes to take the win.
Garrison Johnson added 17 points for Jackson State, Grant Maxey and Darrion Griffin scored 13 apiece and Givens chipped in 10.
Brandon Gordon led Alabama State with 23 points and 10 rebounds and Andrew Hayles and Brandon Brooks added 10 each.
