Dawson’s 18 helps Delaware beat Drexel 67-63
PHILADELPHIA (AP)—Alphonso Dawson scored 18 points and hit all five of his free throws to lead Delaware to a 67-63 victory over Drexel on Saturday.
Herb Courtney added 14 points, Marco Cooper had 10 and leading scorer Marc Egerson had nine points and 10 rebounds for the Blue Hens (6-7, 3-0 Colonial Athletic Association), who have won four of five.
Frank Elegar scored 33 points and had 17 rebounds, both career highs, for the Dragons (8-7, 1-2), who had won three of four.
Delaware bounced back from a 35-28 deficit at the break by shooting 52 percent from the field in the second half. The Blue Hens shot just 29 percent in the first half (9-of-31) and made only one of nine 3-point attempts.
Drexel started the game with a 10-2 run and took a 19-8 lead, their largest of the game, on Scott Rodgers’ 3-pointer with 10:55 remaining in the half. But Delaware scored 16 of the next 20 points and took a 24-23 edge with 5:51 left.
The teams traded baskets for most of the second half until Edwin Santiago’s trey tied the score 53-53 with 10:01 left. Egerson’s layup put Delaware ahead for good, 58-56, with 4:43 remaining.
The Dragons struggled from the foul line late in the game, going 9-for-22 in the second half, including Elegar’s 5-13 from the line.
