Heard’s double-double helps Northridge past Cal Poly SLO, 80-59
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. (AP)—Senior forward Jonathan Heard led a quartet of double-digit scorers for Cal State Northridge with 17 points and produced his first double-double of the season with 11 rebounds as the Matadors topped Cal Poly San Luis Obispo on Thursday night, 80-59 in both schools’ Big West Conference opener.
Northridge improved to 9-3 while Cal Poly fell to 5-8 with its third straight loss.
Junior guard Deon Tresvant added 16 points off the bench for the Matadors while senior center Calvin Chitwood scored 14 points and junior forward Tremaine Townsend 10.
Lorenzo Keeler (11 points) was the long player scoring in double digits for Cal Poly, which hit just 33.9 percent of its floor shots, including five of 21 from three-point range.
Cal State Northridge, which made 46.8 percent of its field goal attempts, sprinted to a 14-4 lead in the first seven minutes. Cal Poly whittled the deficit to 29-24 with 4:59 to play on a pair of free throws by Keeler, but the Matadors pushed the advantage back into double digits and took a 41-26 into intermission.
The Mustangs again made a run early in the second half, trimming the deficit to five points at 41-36 with 14:51 to go on a jumper by senior forward Matt Hanson. But Cal State Northridge scored the next seven points of the game and pulled away down the stretch, leading by as many as 23 points.
Cal State Northridge outrebounded Cal Poly 43-33.
