Bennett leads South Alabama past Troy, 84-73
MOBILE, Ala. (AP)—Demetric Bennett had 26 points and eight rebounds and helped South Alabama ride a late surge to an 84-73 win over Troy Thursday night in the Sun Belt Conference opener for both teams.
Bennett and Domonic Tilford hit back-to-back 3-pointers to start an 18-5 closing run after the Jaguars (8-3) fell behind 68-66 with 7:39 to play on a free throw by Tom Jervis.
It was the second straight huge game for Bennett, who scored 39 points in Saturday’s upset of Mississippi State to earn Sun Belt player of the week honors.
Tilford had 18 points, nine rebounds and six assists for South Alabama. DeAndre Coleman collected 10 points and 18 boards to help the Jaguars build a 58-32 rebounding advantage. Ronald Douglas added 12 points.
O’Darien Bassett led Troy (6-5) with 25 points and hit four 3-pointers.
Trayce Macon and Justin Jonus scored 12 points apiece for the Trojans, who have lost six of seven meetings with South Alabama.
