BLACKSBURG, Va. (AP)—Deron Washington scored 17 points and Jeff Allen scored all 10 of his in the second half as Virginia Tech pulled away to beat Liberty 58-46 Wednesday night.
A.D. Vassallo added 13 for the Hokies (6-4), who were 16-of-20 from the free-throw line.
Alex McLean led the Flames (5-6) with 14, and Anthony Smith added 11.
Neither team led by more than five points in the first half. Kyle Ohman’s layup with 5 seconds to play before the break put Liberty up 23-21.
Washington hit a jumper 8 seconds into the second half to tie the game for the last time. Malcolm Delaney followed with a 3-point play that kicked off a 9-2 run that put the Hokies up 34-35. Another 11-4 run capped off by Hank Thorns’ 3-pointer gave Virginia Tech a 45-33 lead with 5:54 to play. The Flames could get no closer than seven the rest of the game.
