Nebraska coasts to 82-37 win over Savannah St.
LINCOLN, Neb. (AP)Shang Ping scored 11 points to lead Nebraska to an easy 82-37 win Tuesday over Savannah State.
Nebraska (7-2) held Savannah State to just 12 points in the first half. The Huskers led by as many as 31 late in the first half.
The 12 points by Savannah State (6-7) ties a Bob Devaney Sports Center record for fewest points in a half. Three previous Nebraska opponents managed just 12 points in 20 minutes, most recently Morgan State in 2004.
The Tigers missed their first 10 shots, falling behind by 13 after Ping’s basket with 14:08 left in the half. Savannah State then missed eight more shots to trail 26-2 following Aleks Maric’s short jumper with 8:02 remaining.
The Huskers’ largest lead in the first half came on Ping’s 3-pointer that spun into the basket to make the score 37-6 with 1:43 left. Nebraska led 42-12 at the half.
Savannah State made three of its last six shots in the period to finish 6 of 29 from the field. The Tigers committed nine turnovers in the half.
The Huskers shot 60 percent from the field in the half and outrebounded the Tigers by five.
Savannah State never got closer than 35 in the second half. Nebraska’s largest lead was the 45-point final margin.
Maric finished with 10 points for Nebraska.
Anthony Jones led Savannah State with eight points.
